Donnie Wahlberg Gave an IHOP Server a $2,020 Tip

If you’ve spent any time in your life waiting tables, you know what a rollercoaster trying to estimate your monthly income can be – mostly because, no matter how good you are at your job or how many shifts you work, you can never predict what sort of tips folks are going to end up leaving you.

And (in America, at least) servers live off their tips, not the $2 and change they get paid per hour otherwise.

So, I imagine that this woman’s day was significantly improved on New Year’s Day, when Donnie Wahlberg and his wife, Jenny McCarthy, sat down in her section.

Jenny posted a picture of the receipt, with this caption:

“…starting 2020 off like the amazing man he is.”

People are loving the gesture – ad rightfully so. We all know that a little kindness goes a long way!

On the receipt, Wahlberg wrote “Happy New Year” and “2020 Tip Challenge.”

I hope you’re having a great start to the year yourself, and that if your income depends on other people, there are more with the means out there who want to rise to this challenge themselves.

Spread the love when you’ve got plenty to go around, my friends!

People Share Ridiculous Things That Scared Them When They Were Children

For a lot of us, childhood is full of fear and uncertainty.

We think monsters are lurking around every corner and that the world is a very unsafe place…which is kind of true, but as kids we have a lot of irrational fears as well.

Let’s take a little trip down memory lane.

AskReddit users shared their interesting childhood stories.

1. That is pretty weird…

“I used to have this repeating dream that scared me to death. I was always in a skyscraper made of windows, and a giant toddler would walk through the street. If the toddler saw you, you died. Weird fucking dream, but I dreamt it repeatedly for years.”

2. My mom used to tell me this, too.

“Escalators. My mother told me that they will catch my shoestring or pants hem and pull me down and cut me into shreds. I still think if that every time I step on one.”

3. Stay away from drains.

“Drains. Showers and tubs and pools. Especially unfamiliar ones.”

4. Beware of gators.

“I thought an alligator would climb up the wall of our house like a lizard and come through my window and eat me in my sleep.

I lived in Mumbai. We dont have alligators anywhere. Also, they can’t do that.”

5. The stuff that nightmares are made of.

“Willy Wonka.”

6. Ghost dust.

“Dust.

Uncle told me it was left by ghosts.”

7. That’ll scare the hell out of you.

“The windows XP startup and shutdown noise.”

8. A lot of fears.

“Rats, snakes, roaches, etc climbing up the pipe to the toilet and biting my ass.

My grandma’s cocker spaniel jumping on me and knocking me over. He just wanted to lick me and was excited, it turns out.

Other people driving. This one is weird because I trusted absolutely nobody but my mom—if it was anyone else, ie her friends, babysitters, or even my dad, I was absolutely convinced I was going to die.”

9. Not as uncommon as you might think…

“Ceiling fans.

Bro, same. My sister convinced me they would detach and fly across the room. Didn’t help that the fans made weird noises at high speed.”

10. Clapping can be dangerous.

“If I clapped my hands above my head, the nightmares would start. If I clapped them up there again, they would stop. (This didn’t actually happen; it was what I was afraid of.)

Consequently, I had to make sure I only ever clapped my hands above my head an even number of times. If I accidentally clapped them, I had to clap them again.”

11. Scared of balls.

“Balls. Literally any round object was fucking terrifying to me apparently. According to my mom, if she wanted me in a room but didn’t want me to go anywhere, she’d put a ~hand sized red ball in the exit. I was apparently too scared to even go to that side of the room.”

12. The orange glow.

“On a trip to London as a ten-year-old, I woke in the small hours of the morning due to jet lag and was horrified to see an orange glow outside the windows.

I convinced myself that a nuclear explosion had occurred and somehow I had managed to sleep through it.

Nothing happened for an eternity of terror.

So I mustered the courage; I slid out of bed and crawled across the floor, to peep over the window sill and look out on the devastation, the city burning

The street lights were orange, for fog. They don’t have them where I’m from.”

13. Run for it!

“As a child, I used to be scared of the 20th Century Fox themesong. I would run out of the room screaming each time it would come on before or after a movie.”

14. That is kind of creepy…

“The live action Grinch scared my brother when he was a toddler. If he didn’t go to bed on time my parents would threaten him with the VCR tape of it & he would race to bed.”

15. Hyperactive child.

“I was a very hyperactive child, I use to eat and walk around the house and mess it all up, once my grandma told me that if I will keep eating while I’m standing all the food will go down to my legs and feet and they will become so fat I wouldn’t be able to wear shoes anymore.

I stop eating and walking until today.”

Those are pretty darn funny, if I do say so myself.

What were the things that scared you as a kid? Share your memories with us in the comments!

‘The Far Side’ Is Now Online and New Comics Are on the Way

My dad’s favorite cartoon is The Far Side. For every Christmas since I can remember, my mom got him a new desk calendar for his desk at work, and since he retired, one for his desk at home.

And every Christmas since 1995, I’ve listened to him lament that the calendar wrapped under the tree is no longer The Far Side.

Nothing compares (though Pearls Before Swine is close, he says).

Enjoy!

A post shared by far side cartoons (@garylarsons_farside) on

Now my dad, and others like him, have reason to celebrate – Gary Larson and his cartoons are returning.

In the early fall, a cryptic update appeared on Larson’s website, one that hinted at something new in the works for the fans who had been crying into their lesser comics for over two decades.

Then, the announcement: the irreverent, single-panel cartoons will now be available online for the first time.

And there will be new material! It’s not just gonna be archived strips – Larson plans to revisit his world of anthropomorphic cows and science run amok, at least once in a while.

Part of the reason for Larson’s decision is that he hates seeing scanned, illegal versions of his work on the web, and part is that he feels the resolution on new computer screens won’t leave out any of his intentional nuance.

Though there will be new work on the site, Larson told the New York Times that readers shouldn’t expect any regular postings.

“I’m not ‘back,’ at least in the sense I think you’re asking. Returning to the world of deadlines isn’t exactly on my to-do list.”

All writers have a love/hate relationship with deadlines, so I can surely relate – and hope to one day be in a position to set my own, leisurely schedule as well.

That said, it seems we can expect at least some new artwork to float around in the new year. Until then, enjoy the revolving library of content on the website, like daily posts and themed collections.

Oh, happy day – for my dad, and everyone else in the world who gets a second chance to experience firsthand brilliance.

A Sneaky Professor Caught Cheaters by Setting up a Fake Answer Key Online

Teachers have to deal with cheaters. No matter how hard teachers try, kids are gonna find a way around the rules. And I imagine that the advent of the internet has only made students more creative and harder to catch.

But don’t worry, because cheaters aren’t going to get away with it (always). Professors and teachers are getting more creative, too, and are making sure nobody gets an undeserved grade on their watch.

A Reddit user, Mwxh, shared this story about how his old engineering professor set a trap for – and caught – a good number of his students cheating on an exam.

Not my revenge, but my professor against cheaters from ProRevenge

First of all, I had no idea there were websites out there now where people could ask and get answers to homework questions. I’m sure many use it responsibly, like the original poster, but man. What a bunch of malarky (and get off my lawn!).

Second, for everyone sympathizing with the kids who are shamed…no. They cheated. They deserve what’s coming to them. Full stop.

Third, never assume that because a person is old, they don’t understand technology. Especially if that person is an engineering professor.

Cheaters never prosper, my friends!

This Heroic Dog Herds Sheep Away from Fires in Australia

As fires blazed toward an Australian farm, a border collie named Patsy took action to save her herd of sheep.

Allow me to introduce Patsy the wonder dog. In the early hours of 31 December 2019, while fire in Corryong was bearing down them, she and my brother rounded up the sheep and brought them to the safest paddock on the farm. She then found a safe spot while my brother fought the fire with a tractor and a tank of water. Almost all sheep are safe, along with the hay bales and silage, the shearing shed, and both farm houses. My brother doesn’t do social media, but Patsy does. Great job little girl ?Update 7 January 2020 – Patsy and her family are busy cleaning up the farm and helping others get sorted out. You can help too! They would love you to donate to these bushfire relief fundraising collections: https://www.wildlifevictoria.org.au/?view=article&id=145:helping-wildlife-during-bushfires&catid=11:wildlife-informationhttps://blazeaid.com.au/donations/how-donate/https://www.redcross.org.au/campaigns/disaster-relief-and-recovery-donateUpdate 5 January 2020 – Patsy is now on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/p/B67HA-xHJSH/?igshid=126abkbj2hytc #patsythecorryongwonderdog #strongincorryongUpdate 4 January 2020 – Patsy’s story is spreading, so for those people who would like to donate funds to help the Upper Murray community, please support these links which are confirmed to be genuine and keep sharing Patsy’s post ?https://www.parksideproduce.net.au/products/feed-for-fire-gift-voucherhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/xycjem-cudgewa-has-burnt?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheethttps://www.gofundme.com/f/a-little-town-and-its-community-need-some-help?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=copy_link&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet

Posted by Cath Hill on Friday, January 3, 2020

It was New Year’s Eve, but no one was celebrating in Corryong, a small town in rural Victoria. Like other parts of Australia, the little village was burning, and the fires were threatening the edges of Patsy’s farm and her herd of sheep.

That’s when Patsy and her unnamed owner took a risk with their own lives to ensure that the sheep got taken someplace safer.

Patsy’s owner’s sister, Cath Hill, took a picture and video of the brave pup and posted it on social media. She called Patsy, the “wonder dog” and said she herded the sheep to take them to the “safest paddock.”

Which, still not super safe.

Then, Patsy returned to the fire. Hill wrote, “Cool as a cucumber, Patsy waited with [her owner] until the fire got close enough to fight with a tractor and water pump.”

Patsy’s owner doesn’t use social media, but Hill praised them both for saving almost all the sheep, as well as the hay bales, silage, shearing shed and two farm houses.

And here’s Patsy’s sheep, safe and sound today!

A post shared by Patsy The Wonderdog (@patsythecorryongwonderdog) on

Hill also spoke to Metro about the devastation many around Australia are facing.

Everyone is just trying to get water and feed to their animals, shoot the ones that can’t be saved, get temporary fences up to keep stock secure, and put out all the logs and stumps still burning. And there’s people who have nothing left but the clothes on their backs.

Recent rains have helped keep the fires back, but more seasonal hot, dry weather is expected as summer blazes on. In fact, the summer has barely just begun.

Hill hopes her video of Patsy’s bravery will lift her country’s spirits. So far, her video has been shared more than 7,000 times, along with her plea for donations to help.

It’s the world’s hope that the fires will soon go out and Australia’s people and animals finally find some relief.
