15 People Share the Things They Regret Finding out in Their Lives

Sometimes, you find out things that you wish you hadn’t…

Have you ever discovered something in your life that you really wish you hadn’t? Something that changed the way you thought about things or people?

I know I have, and I wish I could turn back the clock and erase those certain things from my mind. But…that’s life…

AskReddit users shared the things they wish they’d never learned in their lives.

1. Robbing the cradle.

“My mum was 14 when she met my dad. He was 24.”

2. Sad…

“That my best friend took her own life. She told me she was moving and gave me all her stuff because she said she had a furnished room where she was going. I hadn’t heard from her in awhile and she never answered my texts so i looked up her name to see if she had an accident. Nope, it was suicide. The kicker is she had talked me out of it back in 2014 and i wasn’t able to be there for her.”

3. She knew…

“That my mother knew she had cancer a year before she told anyone or rather, a year before she was “diagnosed” after I literally forced her to see a doctor for her then extremely distended stomach.

I was under the impression that we told each other absolutely everything because up until that point, we did. I found out the truth a month after she died when I’d requested all of her cancer-related paperwork from her oncologist.”

4. Uh oh…

“That my younger sister has a high rank in a local BDSM club…”

5. That’s a lot to handle.

“My dad informed me when i got back from Iraq that I was the reason he and my mother got a divorce. I never really wanted to join the military anyways, and it fucked me up big time. They had financial troubles and my mom sent me care packages quite a lot. Apparently, that put them into bankruptcy, and if I hadn’t joined it wouldnt have happened. I just wanted to get out of that house because it was like I didnt exist.

Edit: I’ve never received this much support regarding this issue. Thank you. For the first time I think I really believed it when I told myself it wasn’t my fault. I’m smiling so hard through the tears. Seriously thank you.”

6. Way too young for that…

“Mom telling me on regular basis when depressed that she wishes she would fall asleep and never wake up. Don’t tell a six year old this, damn.”

7. Family history.

“I didn’t meet my dad until i was 15. It was in secret since my mother wanted nothing to do with him. Within the first 3 sentences exchanged, he felt the need to tell me that i was conceived on a beach in July during the last time they had sex. I was the product a going-away fuck in a relationship doomed before my conception. He followed it up with “We were good at two things, me and your mom. Fightin and fuckin. Unfortunately we were fighting more than we were fucking so it stopped being worth it.”

10 years later and this is still how i get my family history.”

8. Didn’t need to hear that.

“When I was about 14 my mom took me to a tattoo shop to get her nipples pierced. While the procedure was happening, she turned to me and said “your Dad bites harder then that”……I could have lived without that info.”

9. Bad news.

“That my father cheated on my mother on a regular basis, I discovered he even went in an orgy while with my mom which is not a cool thing to learn when you’re 15 and don’t know if you’re mother knows or not.”

10. Awful.

“That my grandmothers fiancé is a convicted pedophile, she doesn’t care and has moved in with him. He was a teacher at a middle school and sexually abused and violently assaulted 3 handicapped children.”

11. Wow…

“That I’m possibly inbred. My dad had a kid with his first cousin and the kid had down syndrome and a hole in his heart (sweet as can be and really good at videogames). Apparently that was a little common on my dad’s side so it’s possible I’m slightly inbred.”

12. Terrible.

“My mother died in a car accident when I was three. I found out from a newspaper article years later that it was her fault. She wasn’t paying attention and crossed the yellow line and ended both her life and that of the person in the other car.”

13. Defrocked.

“I regret finding out that a priest I used to admire was a pedophile and has since been defrocked.”

14. That’s pretty classy.

“Finding out my ex had slept with my uncle and 3 of my friends…”

15. Totally gut wrenching.

“Looking on my ex gf’s phone when we were on a trip to Ithaca NY. I would take any physical pain I’ve had so far over that I felt when I saw the things on there. Totally gut wrenching. I wanted to marry her.”

This Is How People Are Dealing with a Vegan Influencer Who Is Suddenly Eating All the Meat

Over the past 5 years, social media influencers have experienced a meteoric rise. All you need to get started is a cell phone, some captions, and a lifestyle or line of products, though the competition for finding an audience has gotten pretty fierce.

Some people, like lifestyle influencer Alyse Parker, have built massive followings full of people who not only take their advice, but trust them to be who they say they are online.

So, what happens when people like Parker do a 180, betraying the hundreds or even thousands of people who took them at their word?

Well, in the case of her forgoing a vegan diet for one that’s entirely made up of meat, people are understandably upset – and feeling duped.

By this point, you probably know that I looove trying new things, running little experiments, and diving into challenges of all sorts.⁣ ⁣ Some of the experiments I have run in the past…??‍?⁣ – 30 days without shampoo⁣ – 1 year without deodorant ⁣ – 21 days of only fruit juice⁣ – 30 days without social media⁣ – 3 YEARS of not shaving my armpits, not wearing makeup, not using heat on my hair.. Etc. etc. you get da point ??⁣ ⁣ Yehhh — some may call me crazy.. ?⁣ ⁣ But I’m a firm believer in experiencing things first hand + getting a real feel for what something is all about before I form a personal opinion on it.??⁣ ⁣ The Carnivore Diet first came into my awareness when a close friend shared with me all of the benefits that he was experiencing by eating this way. ⁣ ⁣ Coming from being vegan 4.5 years, I was hellla resistant to the concept of eating ONLY animal foods (aka only meat, seafood, + eggs)⁣ ⁣ I didn’t make ANY sense to me. It actually sounded pretty f*cking ridiculous. ?⁣ ⁣ But oddly enough, I started to hear story after story from my fellow vegan friends jumping ship, testing out the carnivore diet and experiencing amazing health transformations.⁣ ⁣ I was so confused.??⁣ ⁣ But I had my own fair share of health struggles and eventually reached a breaking point where I was willing to try anything to function properly again. ⁣ ⁣ With an online community of 800,000 people ~ many of which were primarily showing up for my vegan related content… I was a bit conflicted to say the least. ⁣ ⁣ But I knew I needed to make decisions based on what was in the best interest for my health.⁣ ⁣ I swallowed my pride + decided I’d give it a shot. Full onnn carnivore. I woke up the next morning feeling more mentally clear, focused, wholesome, and healthy than I had felt in years.⁣ ⁣ God bless. ⁣ But also, WTF?⁣ My vegan identity crumbled immediately. ⁣ ⁣ This past year of my life has been a journey of remembering who I am separate from what I eat. ?⁣ ⁣ In hopes of challenging others to step out of their current perspective ~ I documented my newest challenge of eating only meat for 30 days.⁣ ⁣ Video launches next week. ⁣ Who’s ready? Comment ? below!

A post shared by ALYSE PARKER ⚡ (@alyseparkerr) on

“The Carnivore Diet first came into my awareness when a close friend shared with me all of the benefits that he was experiencing by eating this way,” Alyse wrote. She also said she “woke up the next morning feeling more mentally clear, focused, wholesome, and healthy than I had felt in years.”

Nicole Zach, a fan from Chile who began a “successful vegan lifestyle” after following Alyse, told Buzzfeed News that though Alyse had been an “inspiration,” the announcement left her cold.

“When she announced she was eating meat again I couldn’t believe it. She used to be so devoted to veganism,” Nicole said. “She can do whatever she wants of course, I just hope this change of diet and lifestyle doesn’t affect others. I would hate to see some of Alyse’s followers getting confused and considering eating animals again.”

A (former) fan named Haley is disappointed, too, and told Buzzfeed News she’s embarrassed that the blogger is part of her personal journey.

“Up until [Alyse’s latest Instagram post] I would still reference her and be proud that she inspired me. However, now I feel as though I listened to a hypocrite,” Haley said. “Considering much of her product and basis of her career is on health and helping the environment, I do not think she has a care for anything besides herself.”

Alyse is not alone, either. Recently, vegan influencer Yovana “Rawvana” Mendoza was caught eating meat while at a restaurant, and the fact that she was hiding it instead of just telling the truth created extra rub.

And while some followers understand that people are allowed to change their minds, and that health reasons can come into play, more and more feel like Nicole and Haley – like they were lied to, and like they’ll never be able to trust something people say online again.

Which is all the more reason, I suppose, to live your life the way you feel is best for you, and take with a grain of salt how others live theirs.

Just a thought.

This Is Why Drinking Alcohol Makes You so Hungry

Have you drank a few cold beers only to be left salivating for some salty french fries or a hot slice of pepperoni pizza? Whatever your adult beverage of choice is, you can blame science for your grumbling stomach the next time you’re out drinking.

According to a 2017 study by the Francis Crick Institute, consuming alcohol does have a direct effect on your hunger levels. Over the course of two years, scientists studied the effect of ethanol alcohol on the body, brain and actions of mice, with the results lending a useful insight into why we get the munchies.

The experiment consisted of giving mice between 1.5 to two bottles of wine over a three-day period. Interestingly, the alcohol caused AgRP neurons located in the hypothalamus to become increasingly active. Though the mice experienced an increased appetite, their metabolism and energy levels dropped.

“Our study clearly shows that the main area of the brain responsible for eating (the hypothalamus and its AgRP neurons) is directly affected and excited by ethanol, and that mice respond very strongly to its exposure by overeating for several hours afterward,” the co-authors of the study explained.

After repeating the study but blocking the AgRP neuron signals, the scientists found that the mice ate less. Ultimately, those AgRP neurons may be the culprit behind binge eating after binge drinking.

These results suggests that the more you drink, the more you will crave food (not exactly news to someone like me). What is important is to avoid binge drinking, which the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines as a pattern of behavior that boosts blood alcohol concentration above .08 grams per deciliter.

The authors caution against binge drinking in order to avoid one of the dangerous effects of binge eating: obesity.

“Binge drinking and obesity are typically thought of as two separate societal problems, but why does this happen all over the world and what is making us do this? It is too easy to believe that one cannot lead to the other, and that this correlation does not involve the brain somehow,” the authors wrote.

Plus, alcohol has a pretty high caloric content, too.

So the next time you’re out at the bar or club, make sure to keep track of how many drinks you have. Those two-for-one specials can lead to some serious consequences for your waistline if you’re not careful.

Study Finds That Poorly Wrapped Gifts Make People Happier Than Perfect Ones

Are you stressed out about getting your gifts perfectly wrapped for the holidays? A new study says: don’t be.

Researchers at the University of Nevada found that poorly wrapped presents make people happier than perfectly wrapped ones. This is because, in part, perfect-looking presents look so great on the outside that whatever’s inside may not live up to expectations. If a gift looks sloppy, though, the recipient is likely to be pleasantly surprised by the actual gift. They also appreciate the effort that was made. The gratitude and surprise leaves them feeling happy and joyful.

One of the study’s co-authors, Jessica Rixom, Ph.D., got her idea for the study from her time working at a chocolate shop. She explained,

“They offered a wrapping service, so I learned how to wrap very neatly with crisp edges, just the right amount of paper, etc. I started wrapping my own gifts that way and many years later, when wrapping presents with a friend, I noticed that all of the gifts in my pile were neat while all of theirs were messy, even though they were trying. This made us wonder whether the way the gift was wrapped would have any influence on how the gifts themselves were perceived and that’s how it started.”

The study tested what Rixom and the other researchers call “expectation disconfirmation theory.”

“Based on participants’ answers to various questions, it suggested that the reason why this happens is because the neat wrapping sets higher expectations for the gift inside, which makes it harder for the gifts to live up to those expectations. When the gifts are unwrapped, the recipient is a bit disappointed whereas when it’s wrapped sloppily, expectations are lower so the gift is more of a pleasant surprise.”

So, don’t worry at all if your gifts look like they were wrapped by a five-year-old. It doesn’t take away from the power of the gift—it might even make it stronger.

People Born in December Have Advantages over Others, Studies Show

We all like to to give a shout-out to the month we were born (February, what up!). But is there really any advantage to being born in one month as opposed to any of the others?

Surprisingly, studies point to YES. And I’m talking about multiple studies that suggest December is the best month in which to be born.

Let’s look at the evidence.

First, one study showed that babies born in December fall asleep faster and earlier than babies born during the summer months. Furthermore, another study suggested that December babies are more likely to be “morning people” than people born in any other month, and we all know that is a MAJOR life advantage.

Bebe durmiendo.

Second, research shows that people born in December have a better chance to live to the age of 100. The study also showed that an impressive number of December-born folks actually lived to be 105 or older.

Studies also show that those born in the twelfth month of the year have lower rates of cardiovascular disease than those born in the other eleven months of the year.

Elderly couple

What about the brains of December babies? Well, because they are usually the youngest in their classes, they often benefit academically. It can be hard being the smallest kid in the class when you’re younger, but think about how ahead of the curve you’ll be when you apply to colleges.

One more thing: if you’re worried about what kind of career your kiddo might have, consider this: people in December are the most likely to work as dentists, for some reason, which is definitely a good thing.

Now I’m kind of bummed I was born in February…thanks for nothing, Mom and Dad!

People Share the Weirdest Gifts They’ve Ever Received

It’s officially the holiday season! Lots of gifts, including really odd gifts from your family, most notably your Uncle Al who likes to give really weird presents every year.

Do you have someone in your family who gives odd gifts for holidays and birthdays?

These AskReddit users certainly do…

1. Thanks, Mom…

“One year I came home for Christmas and my mom had been asking me what I wanted for Christmas and I told her I didn’t want anything, I had everything I need and not to get me anything.

Well, come Christmas morning there were a number of gifts with my name on them.. we always hand out all the gifts first and we each had a pretty decent pile..

We always start with the youngest and go up so I was like 3rd or 4th in line, and everyone had pretty normal gifts.. gloves, PJs, usual winter gift stuff.

My turn comes up, I probably have maybe 8 or 9 small packages to open. I open the first one and it’s a box of hamburger helper.. I laughed and was like, uh thanks Mom..and then I continue.. after 3 boxes of hamburger/tuna helper there’s a couple cans of chef boyardee and spaghettios and I’m like.. do you think I’m not eating or something, or are you trying to kill me? What’s with all the random food?

Her response? “No, I just felt bad that you didn’t have anything to open on Christmas! You can go put those back in the cabinet when you’re done.”

Thanks, mom. ?

2. What a gift!

“A co-worker of mine won a radio show contest where people were invited to describe the crappiest office gift they ever got. My friend was the secretary of an IT company and her boss gave her a plastic bowl for Christmas. And it wasn’t even a nice plastic bowl. The first time she put it in the microwave, it melted. She won the contest and got a $100 gift card to Outback Steak House. Her boss insisted she take him since it was his crappy gift that caused her to win the contest.”

3. There’s always an uncle like this…

“My uncle is notoriously cheap. One year he gave me a magazine that had Ichiro Suzuki on the cover. It was a free magazine (as it stated on the bottom of the cover). Another year he also gave me a free t-shirt he had gotten for running a race. Possibly the best, was the birthday gift he gave my dad one year- a McDonalds Happy Meal toy.:

4. Can’t talk trash because he’s the boss.

“Maybe not the most WTF, but at my old company, we had a secret Santa gift exchange. The manager drew my name, and gifted me a very clearly used zoodler. He proceeded to explain, in front of everyone, that he though I would have more use for it, as he only ate “real noodles”.

I don’t work there anymore.”

5. What are you talking about, Granny?

“I got a 3 foot tall stuffed Mr. Peanut doll from my 89 year old Grandma for Christmas…when I was 23.

She said “I know how you like to collect things like this.” Not sure what she was talking about.

I did kind of love it though and still have it 12 years later.”

6. Mocked mercilessly.

“An Egyptian pharaoh pen when i was in middle school. It was all gold colored, and the pen barrel stuck out between his legs. Needless to say i was mocked mercilessly by my classmates for having this massive Egyptian dong pen.”

7. Give it away, now.

“I have been disabled my entire life. It affects the footwear choices in my life. My mom has bought me dozens of pairs of slippers that I cannot wear. Sometimes multiple pairs per year. I have given up at this point. I just give them away.

When I was a teen, before I moved out she also had given me embroidered dish towels with weird sayings.

She also refuses to actually get my damn size and just holds clothes in the air and looks at them to decide if it looks like it should fit.”

8. An empty box.

“A cheese and champagne gift set that had the champagne and most of the other goodies taken out of it. So cheese in a mostly empty box.”

9. Thanks?

“When I was a kid (6 or 7) I had surgery on nearly all of the fingers on my dominant hand (the other hand came later!), scary surgery for a kid though pretty simple, mostly boring and a few weeks of pain, my aunt (who I love) sent me a coloring book in the hospital as a “cheer-up” / “pass the time” gift.

If it’s the thought that counts, I like to say, we should think hard ….”

10. Actually…

“I randomly went to some extended family Christmas event and they gave me a woven basket. Within ten minutes, they had asked for the basket back. It “meant something” to them?? I didn’t really care, I thought it was odd and funny.”

11. Dammit, Mom!

“A lavender gift set (eye mask, cream, perfume) from my mother in law. I am severely allergic to lavender, and she knows this.”

12. Sharing and caring.

“Christmas, 1993. I was eleven.

My grandma gave me one half of a pool cue.

She gifted the other half to my then-8-year-old brother.

Grandma: “See? You can only use it if you two cooperate and share!”

We did not own a pool table.”

13. WTF?

“When I was accepted into my business college they sent me a single sock.”

14. A great Christmas.

“I was once given some yeast, a cucumber and a pack of Toblerone for a secret Santa.”

15. I need that DVD in my life.

“My little brother bought me a “How to become a Male Model” DVD. Got drunk with my buddy and his girlfriend. We were laughing the whole time. Then she wanted to watch it again and they had a fight over it.”

This Electric Eel Generates Enough Electricity to Light a Christmas Tree

‘Tis the season for eels to power your Christmas lights.

Isn’t that the way the saying goes? No?

Well it might be now, after the Tennessee Aquarium live-tweeted their resident social media eel, Miguel Wattson, using his bio-electric discharges to light up a Christmas tree.

Their “Shocking around the Christmas Tree” exhibit uses a special system to connect Miguel’s tank to the light strands on a nearby tree, and it’s honestly more magical than you might expect.

The aquarium issued a statement on their newest sensation:

“Whenever Miguel discharges electricity, sensors in the water deliver the charge to a set of speakers. The speakers convert the discharge into the sound you hear and the festively flashing lights.”

Despite being dubbed “electric eels,” they aren’t eels at all, but freshwater knifefish. They’re closely related to carp and catfish, but because of their appearance, get lumped in with eels instead.

They can generate up to 860 volts of electricity – which means they could power a refrigerator, too, if only for a short while.

“The rapid, dim blinking of the lights is caused by the constant, low-voltage blips of electricity he releases when he’s trying to find food. The bigger flashes are caused by the higher voltage shocks he emits when he’s eating or excited.”

Typical male, if you ask me.

Electrophorus electricus can also use the low pulsating electric discharges to communicate with one another in the slow-moving, murky rivers where they live in South America. The fish also use their shocking ability to hunt, and as defense mechanisms in the event another animal tries to bite them.

A Teen Got into a Car Accident, Posted a TikTok to “Cope” with the Shock

A lot of us have been in minor car accidents or we at least know someone who has. And it’s not uncommon that a brush with mortality would cause someone to go into a shock for a while – stuff like that is really scary.

16-year-old Katie Cornetti recently found out just how terrifying a car accident can be. And in order to get over her shock, she decided to post a TikTok that went viral soon after.

Cornetti posted a few more videos on the microfilm social media site in the days to come. Luckily, she and her friends didn’t have any life-threatening injuries. The teen told Buzzfeed,

“We saw [the window] shatter and we look at each other, and were like, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ Once we figured out we were all OK, we started laughing. We’re best friends and this is how we coped together.”

The 16-year-old was in the car with two of her friends when the crash occurred. Cornetti’s friend Marissa was driving that day and the car suddenly rolled while they were on a winding road. The culprit was a tire that wasn’t properly secured to the vehicle.

Thankfully everyone was wearing their seat belts and they were fine. Then, Cornetti decided to create a TikTok, which, to her surprise, went super viral.

Some people thought it was funny:

But not everyone on social media was amused.

But Cornetti seems to be coping with her virality just fine:

“The comments are not really bothering me ’cause who does make a TikTok after a car crash?” she asked. “We are perfectly fine, we got really lucky.”

It’s hard to judge what people do after such a stressful event, and the good news is that everyone turned out to be okay.

What do you think of Cornetti and her friends’ TikTok?
