A Couple in Hawaii Invented a Mobile Shower Service for the Homeless

None of us are as secure as we think. An unfortunate series of events might unexpectedly occur one day that left you homeless. In fact, a lot of people are only one medical disaster or one unlucky break at work from being evicted or forced onto the streets.

Craig and Danica Shoji are a couple who are trying to do their part to help out Honolulu, Hawaii’s homeless population by making them “feel like humans again.” How are they doing it? They created mobile showers so homeless folks can get clean and feel better about themselves.

This may not seem like a big deal to those of us who live in apartments or houses, but to someone who is out on the streets every single day, it can be a huge gift.

Craig Shoji first had the idea to help the homeless when he was in San Francisco in 2015. He said “good morning” to a homeless man and the person was surprised and touched by the encounter because he said that no one ever spoke to him on the street. The Shojis decided then that they would do what they could to “just treat people like normal people.”

They began by creating Laundry Love, which provided clean clothes to homeless men and women. That eventually grew into Revive + Refresh which provides people on the streets with mobile showers as well as hot meals.

The Shojis have a trailer with two showers and they take it to events around Honolulu. People are allowed 15 minutes in the shower stalls, which are stocked with supplies. Homeless people are also invited to eat hot meals after their showers.

Craig Shoji said, “It’s amazing what a simple shower and a hot meal can do to uplift someone’s spirits, boost their confidence, and rekindle their motivation to keep fighting the good fight.”

This is an incredible idea from two people who are clearly living their best lives. Great job!

A Couple Mistakenly Received a Package with Almost $550,000 Worth of Ecstasy Pills

Online shopping can be a bit of a gamble—you never know what you’re actually going to get in the mail. But 25,000 ecstasy tablets? Now that’s a new twist.

A middle-aged couple in Austria opened a package one morning that was supposed to contain dresses from a retailer in the Netherlands. To their extreme surprise, it contained several bags of ecstasy tablets instead.

The woman initially mistook the tablets for decorative purple stones. Then her husband took a closer look and realized that they were likely stimulants. They returned the package to the local post office in Linz, Upper Austria.

“The originally planned cozy breakfast was quickly over and to the horror of the couple, it turned out that, though one of the packages did contain the two dresses, the second however had 24,800 Ecstasy tablets worth about €500,000 (roughly $550,000),” the Upper Austria police said in a statement.

“The (post) office was equally astonished, which is why the police, and subsequently the narcotics department of the City Police Command Linz, was informed.”

The Netherlands is one of the world’s largest drug producers. After further investigation, the Linz drug squad discovered that the package was supposed to have been sent to Scotland. Scottish police and the UK’s National Crime Agency are now assisting in the investigation.

Hike Atlanta’s ‘Doll’s Head Trail’ If You Really Want to Be Creeped out

If you’re looking for a different kind of scare this Halloween season and you find yourself in the Southeast, you should consider making a trip to Atlanta to check out Doll’s Head Trail, a one-of-a-kind, eerie experience that will leave you unsettled.

The trail is in Atlanta’s Constitution Lakes Park, and it is decorated with, as the name implies, creepy doll’s heads.

The park used to be home to a brick factory that closed about 50 years ago. Since then, the woods have overtaken the area, and in 2003 the county bought the 125-acre site and built boardwalks and trails so people could enjoy the natural beauty of the spot.

But in addition to natural beauty, there’s also the doll’s heads.

A local carpenter named Joel Slaton created the trail after seeing all the discarded junk that littered the park. Slaton decided to use the junk to make the trail into an art space with doll’s heads, and other forgotten materials, dotting the hiking trail.

Slaton encourages others to add their own art pieces to the trail, with the only stipulation being that any materials used must come from inside the park itself. So if you do go, you can do some exploring and digging around to add to the creepiness of Doll’s Head Trail.

If you do decide to hike the trail, you’ll forget that you’re in the middle of a huge American city and instead think you’ve wandered into a nightmare. Sounds good to me!

Also, I bet this would be a great place for a first date. You’d find out immediately if your date is as weird as you are…

Cold Stone Has a Pitch Black ‘Boo Batter’ Ice Cream for Halloween

I love Halloween, I love the fall, I love October. Oh, and I also love ice cream! What happens when you mix all those things together?

‘Boo Batter’ ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery is what.

The new concoction from Cold Stone features black-as-night ice cream topped with heaps of candy. This is how the company described the Boo Batter treat in a press release:

“The Treat Or Treat Creation features Boo Batter Ice Cream, mixed with trick-or treat favorites Halloween OREO® Cookies, Kit Kat® and M&M’s®! In addition, guests will be given the option to bring their Creation to life with a black or orange waffle cone or bowl.”

Sara Schmillen, vice president of marketing for Kahala Brands™, the parent company of Cold Stone Creamery, said, “We are incredibly excited to introduce this super limited time Creation at Cold Stone Creamery. Indulge in the nostalgia of your Halloween childhood memories with the Treat or Treat Creation; it is a spook-tacular way to get into the Halloween spirit!”

Get an eyeful of that jet black gooey goodness.

We’re seeing an onslaught of creepy food and drink options for Halloween this year from eateries, including the It frappuccino at Starbucks and spooky options at IHOP and AMC Theatres for the release of the new animated version of The Addams Family.

I’m already starting to get depressed about October ending and having to wait another year for all this spooky goodness. Is there something wrong with me?

HALLOWEEN!

Yellowstone National Park Is Going to Have Its First Woman Chief Ranger

Bravo!

For the first time in its 147 year history, Yellowstone National Park will see its first female chief ranger.

Sarah Davis, a National Park Service veteran for 20 years, will be the park’s 18th chief ranger, and the first woman to officially hold the top job (the park has had other women serve in an interim chief ranger capacity).

Superintendent Cam Sholly said, in a statement, “Sarah is an outstanding leader with a track record of high performance, strategic thinking, and collaboration.”

Davis’ responsibilities as chief of resource and visitor protection, includes overseeing 275 employees in the areas of law enforcement, search and rescue, emergency services, fires, special permits, trails. If visitors to the park experiences any problems, Davis and her rangers will be there to help.

Before the Yellowstone assignment, Davis has been sharpening her chief ranger skills since 2012 overseeing Natchez Trace Parkway, which is a 444 mile long recreational road covering three states. In 2016, she was awarded the Southeast Region Excellence Award.

David has also acted as superintendent of the Vicksburg and Guilford Courthouse National Military Parks, held various chief ranger positions over Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, as well as a range of duties at Manassas National Battlefield Park, Independence National Historic Park, Assateague Island National Seashore, and Blue Ridge Parkway.

“It is an honor and privilege to be selected for this position,” said Davis. “I’m excited to join the Yellowstone team, and work together to protect our first national park and its visitors, and ensure the health, safety, and wellness of our employees.”

Davis is a native of Lexington, North Carolina, and she graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio, with a Bachelor of Arts in History. She later graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigations National Academy in 2013.

Her history-making role starts with her relocation to Yellowstone, where she will take charge of one of the most beautiful national parks in the United States.
