15 Group Costumes That Won Halloween

Halloween’s almost here, and if you’re still scratching your head trying to think of a costume, here’s a suggestion: get some friends together and try a group costume! The benefits are many. It takes the pressure off you to come up with a costume for yourself. It shows the world that you and your friends do everything together, even the holidays. And finally, a group costume can elevate an otherwise mediocre costume into a great one. By yourself, you’re just a sad, lonely construction worker. But get some friends onboard and suddenly you’re a member of the Village People!

Here are 15 group costumes that you and your friends can try this Halloween. Some are punny masterpieces that even the anti-pun crowd will appreciate. Some are your favorite groups of characters from across pop culture. Some are just inventive and hilarious. You’ll agree: Halloween is better in a group.

Last-Minute Halloween Costumes for the Procrastinator in All of Us

We previously featured some creative and clever homemade Halloween costumes made by overachievers. Today, we’re featuring the opposite: costumes that someone clearly threw together at the very last minute. The kind of costume you get when you forget it’s Halloween and grab whatever’s available.

A few of these costumes have the sort of simple charm that makes people regret spending $400 on their ultra-realistic Voldemort costume. But most are laughably awful, not even worthy of an honorable mention in a costume contest.

Hey, I don’t judge. This will absolutely be me in a couple weeks.

1. Candy “Rappers”

Get it?! Because “rappers” rhymes with “wrappers”! Not only does this costume involve wordplay, it gives you an excuse to scarf down 50 pieces of candy in one sitting.

2. 50 Shades of Grey

Minimal effort, minimal hassle. Unless you count the fight with the Home Depot guy for taking too many paint samples.

3. Salt and Pepper

This is the sort of costume that will have everyone at the party coming up to you and asking what the hell it is. Are you guys…Salmonella and Puberty?

4. Pigs in a Blanket

Not bad!

5. Identity Thief

Is she an identity thief, or is she a woman with 14 different personalities? Either way: fun!

6. Weatherman in a hurricane.

Partly cloudy with a chance of SUCCESS!

7. God’s gift to men/women.

Hopefully men/women kept the receipt.

8. American tourists.

Does Paris have a TGI Friday’s? These two know!

9. Audrey Hepburn

A great way to reuse that dress from your great aunt’s funeral.

10. Rosie the Riveter

Easy! All you need is a denim shirt, a bandana, and a can-do attitude.

11. Red Box movie rentals

This costume’s cheap, easy, and requires no planning whatsoever–just like renting from Red Box!

12. When life gives you lemons…hold up the lemons and shrug?

Is she supposed to be the entire saying, or is she supposed to be life itself, about to give someone lemons? I’m confused. D minus.

13. Ariel from The Little Mermaid, moments after arriving on land.

Nice and simple. Just make sure you wash your bedsheet first.

14. A ceiling “fan”

This Artist’s Illustrations Show How Easy It Is for Boys to Pick up Casual Sexism

Kids don’t know there are different expectations for genders when they’re born, or that people’s skin colors can mean they experience life in a different way, or that some people think certain kinds of romantic love are unacceptable. They learn these things from the adults in their lives, and many people try their hardest to make sure that they don’t hand down any prejudices to their kids.

Not every though.

too many adults seem unaware that they’re passing on sexism on a daily basis – a fact that artist Damian Alexander sought to illustrate with his comics.

As a child, he didn’t understand why people were always trying to redirect him from having female role models (other boys might find this in people trying to redirect them from liking certain colors, or television shows, toys, or hobbies), and he hopes that by pointing out how harmful and distressing it can be to kids, adults might cut it out.

If you like these illustrations, make sure to follow Damian on his website, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Here’s hoping we can raise generations of boys who can like what and who they like without anyone making them feel badly about it!

15 Homemade Halloween Costumes That Are Way Better Than Store-Bought Ones

Halloween is right around the corner, and if you’re like me, you haven’t even begun to think about your costume yet. And let’s be honest: we probably won’t start thinking about our costume until noon of the 31st at the very earliest. At that point, we’ll be forced to either pay through the nose for a store-bought costume, or we’ll throw something together using whatever’s available. Which is how I came up with my worst ever Halloween costume, “Guy in a Polo shirt.”

This year, let’s break the cycle! There’s still time to put together a costume that will be remembered for years. And below, you can get some inspiration from people who went all out on All Hallow’s Eve. (via Bored Panda).

I mean, all of us will definitely still procrastinate on our costumes again this year, but it’s nice to feel ambitious for a few minutes, isn’t it?

A Woman Shared Her Ex’s Text Messages to Show How Abusers Act Behind Closed Doors

When people who survive abuse open up about their experiences, confused folks often wonder: “Why didn’t you just leave?” But escaping from an abusive situation is never that simple. It’s a tangled, terrifying web of threats and intimidation, and it’s usually carefully hidden from others. Bystanders often have no idea just how bad things have gotten.

One woman shared screenshots of her abusive ex-husband’s text messages to show exactly what it’s like on the inside of an abusive relationship. Kristy is, thankfully, no longer with her ex, Adam.

First, he’d frequently send her a barrage of paranoid texts while she was on shift at work, despite the fact that she wasn’t allowed to have her phone while on the clock.

Another text shows Adam questioning her about her coworker, Tony, who committed the cardinal sin of changing her tire once.

And the third text shows that he literally set traps for her so that he’d know whether she slept at home or not. She was at a female friend’s house that night.

Adam also physically abused Kristy, then warned her not to tell her family members about it despite the fact that they could see the bruises on the rare occasions when they got to see Kristy.

Adam was so controlling and paranoid that he made Kristy take photos to prove that she wasn’t lying about her location.

He also made her step out at midnight every night to call her, And though she did her best to comply with his outlandish demands, he still berated her and told her not to come back to their home state.

Adam wasn’t always this way. He used to be kind and loving, Kristy says, until she lost weight and got a job. Then the abuse began.

“I finally got the guts to leave when he hurt my dog and kitten,” she explained. “3 years later and I’m actually doing great… I save these text messages to remind myself how far I’ve come.”

We support you Kristy. And anyone whose having trouble in an abusive relationship, just know that there are resources that you can rely on, and people who want to help you.

Panera Fired an Employee for Exposing How Their Mac and Cheese Is Made

Do you like Panera’s mac and cheese? I sure am. It’s the highlight of my meal when I go.

But recently you may have seen a viral TikTok showing just how it’s cooked – or, rather, reheated. Many viewers have expressed their dismay, but the shocks don’t end there: the employee was fired for her video!

Ok, let’s put aside the employee being fired for a second (just a second, I promise). Reheating (and cooking) food in food-safe plastic bags is actually a pretty standard method. If you aren’t familiar, sous-vide (the fancy name for cooking food sealed in plastic in a water bath) is a five-star chef way of cooking. In fact, there is a whole system behind it.

“Sous-vide is a cooking technique that utilizes precise temperature control to deliver consistent, restaurant-quality results. High-end restaurants have been using sous vide cooking for years to cook food to the exact level of doneness desired, every time.”

You can buy a fancy sous-vide setup for your home, or you can give it a low tech go by following these three simple steps – once you gather the right pot and thermometer you are ready.

1. Attach your precision cooker to a pot of water and set the time and temperature according to your desired level of doneness.

2. Put your food in a sealable bag and clip it to the side of the pot.

3. Finish by searing, grilling, or broiling the food to add a crispy, golden exterior layer.

This technique distributes heat at an even temperature around the food, giving it exact “done-ness.” Forget the scorching, or overcooked noodles – it’s consistent results, every time.

The only thing that could be wrong about Panera’s technique? How about a flash broil on the top to make the cheese bubbly? Cause, come on.

Ok, back to the employee being fired.

While Panera won’t comment on “personnel matters,” the employee posted this followup video:

And frankly, I think it was a missed opportunity – instead of firing their employee, they should have played it up to the media like, “Hey, we serve sous-vide mac and cheese just like Michelin chefs!”

Because corporate America doesn’t need to keep doing shady stuff to cover up shady stuff.

Just sayin’.

Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM) Is a Rare but Real Condition

The few people who have highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) can tell you exactly what happened on any given day, down to the way they felt and at what time. It’s both a superpower and a curse, depending on the circumstances. And to this day, scientists have no idea what contributors make a person have HSAM.

Though they do have some theories.

In 2006, a case study of  Jill Price, referred to by the pseudonym AJ in the study, was published in Neurocase. It described in detail her unusual memory. Price later outed herself as AJ publicly.

In an email, Price explained her ability:

I can take a date, between 1974 and today, and tell you what day it falls on, what I was doing that day and if anything of great importance (i.e.: The Challenger Explosion, Tuesday, January 28, 1986) occurred on that day I can describe that to you as well …Whenever I see a date flash on the television (or anywhere else for that matter) I automatically go back to that day and remember where I was, what I was doing, what day it fell on and on and on and on and on. It is non-stop, uncontrollable and totally exhausting.

And she wasn’t alone. A number of people came forward after the report, saying they had the same ability. Some were tested and found to have HSAM, same as Price.

Currently, only about 60 people worldwide are believed to have HSAM. Scientists are working with them to see if they can learn more about the average person’s memory, as well as how, and why, their super memories operate the way they do.

Something researchers have uncovered is that people with HSAM tend toward obsessiveness with cleaning, collecting and organizing, so there is thinking that perhaps collecting and organizing memories is part of HSAM.

Also, structural differences in the areas of the brain associated with autobiographical memory creation show up on scans. When asked about particular dates from the past, regular people lose their ability to recall them after about a week. People with HSAM recall details up to a decade and longer.

Something else researchers found was that people with HSAM can recall false memories just as often as regular people. So, their superhuman memories are far from perfect.

So, what does this all mean? Maybe the answer lies in the mysterious part of the brain where we turn short-term memories into long-term memory.

It would be interesting to figure out, although where this could have practical applications for those of us with normal to poor memories remains to be seen.

I kind of like living my life able to forget – at least I don’t remember all my regrets…

Learn the Strategies and Secrets of ‘Jeopardy!’ Champion James Holzhauer

James Holzhauer dominated 10 single-day record totals as he won $2,462,216 over 33 appearances on Jeopardy!

His reign ended only because he used Final Jeopardy to finish with scores referencing his wedding anniversary, his daughter’s birthday and other important dates.

So, how did he do it?

Obviously, he knows a lo-ot of stuff. Outside of an excellent run in high school quiz bowl, he devours children’s books and Jeopardy! episodes. He has an extensive knowledge base covering many subjects…and that’s how you get on the show.

According to The Ringer, it was Holzhauer’s speed at buzzer usage that put him on top. He apparently drilled with a homemade buzzer made of a mechanical pencil wrapped in masking tape, while wearing his Jeopardy! shoes in front of the TV.

Fellow record-holder Ken Jennings (74 straight games) said most contestants know the answers (questions, really) to the questions (answers, really), so buzzer speed is what it’s going to take to be the one who gets the money.

Another one of Holzhauer’s strengths was board control. He explained his method in this NPR article. What he would do was always start at the bottom with the highest value clues. Those answers would build up his account fast. After he got past a certain amount, he would start looking for the Daily Doubles. When he found one, he would wager everything he had.

James just passed $1,000,000 in Jeopardy! winnings, so we're launching the official James Tracker! Click here to follow his progress: bit.ly/James-Official-Tracker

Posted by Jeopardy! on Tuesday, April 23, 2019

Risky? Sure, but he had enough confidence to know that even if he lost everything, he could build it right back up. Such self assurance likely comes from how he makes his living–sports betting. Successful gamblers know they have to bet big to win big. It’s all in the strategy.

As Holzhauer told NPR, “All good professional gamblers are selectively aggressive. You need to pick your spots and bet big when you identify them.”

To him, winning over $2,000,000 is all a game to him. But it’s also work he finds supremely satisfying.
