Scientists Just Discovered a New Species of Human

The human family tree just grew another branch! Scientists are calling it Homo luzonensis, and it was discovered in a cave in the Philippines.

Image Credit: Callao Cave Archaeology Project

A 67,000-year-old thigh bone was discovered in the same system of caves back in 2007, which was unexpected because the island was cut off from the mainland during the last Ice Age. At the time, it was impossible to tell whether the bone came from a Homo sapien who had somehow made their way there, from another known species like Homo florensiensis, or something entirely new.

Now that 12 more fossils from at least three individuals . – two adults and a juvenile – have been found in the same cave, scientists are able to say for sure that they’re from a previously unknown species of early human. The remains share some similarities with Australopithecus aferensis, which died out over 2 million years ago, and others with Homo sapiens and even Homo erectus.

Image Credit: Callao Cave Archaeology Project

They also have features particular to them alone, such as small molars, that have never been documented before now.

Since stone tools and cut bones had also been found in the cave system, the discovery of human ancestors wasn’t a surprise, says Professor Philip Piper.

“We know hominids have been on Luzon for at least 700,000 years. We don’t know what sort of hominid.”

Because of the difficulty in extracting DNA from remains that have been in tropical environments and the low quantity of bones, we might never know for sure how they got there, whether they evolved from Homo erectus or a different common ancestor, or how they went extinct.

Researchers continue to hope that more digging might bring them more fossils, and that at least some of those questions could be answered.

Until then, welcome to the family, Homo luzonensis. We’re not perfect, but we’ve got great food.

Washington May Become First State to Legalize “Human Composting”

It’s an age-old question that you’ve most likely thought about at one time or another: what will happen to your body after you die? Do you want to be buried in a cemetery? Cremated and spread into the ocean?

In what would be a historic move, it looks like Washington may be the first state to offer ‘human composting’ as an option after residents pass away. The method transforms human remains into soil, takes four to seven weeks to complete, and results in roughly a cubic yard of…well, compost.

Washington’s state legislature already passed a bill allowing human composting, and now it’s up to Governor Jay Inslee to sign the bill into law. If he does, the law will take effect in May 2020.

Here’s how it works: bodies are placed into large, cylindrical tubes filled with wood chips, alfalfa, and straw. A controlled amount of oxygen helps to speed up the decomposition, and after 4-7 weeks the transformation is complete. Family and friends can keep the soil in urns or do whatever they see fit with the remains.

Back to Earth: Washington set to allow 'human composting': https://www.kspr.com/content/news/Back-to-Earth-Washington-set-to-allow-human-composting-508906941.html

Posted by KSPR News on Monday, April 22, 2019

The process has been called an eco-friendly alternative to traditional burial and cremation, which releases 600 million pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year.

It will be interesting to see what states follow Washington’s lead if the bill is signed into law.

This Passenger’s Conversation with Jet Blue Airline Is Absolutely Terrifying

Are you the type of person who believes in conspiracy theories and doesn’t trust 90% of what the government says? Then you may not want to read about this conversation between airline passenger MacKenzie Fegan and Jet Blue Airlines.

She went to the airport and was in line to board her flight, ready with her boarding pass in hand. But it turned out she didn’t need it – all she had to do was look into camera. No one asked her for her pass. No one asked her if she wanted to opt out or in to whatever was going on, and MacKenzie went along, because that’s what we do when we’ve been trained to keep the line moving and people are waiting.

She started to think about it later, though, and sent the company a tweet.

The ensuing thread should make each and every one of us wonder what’s ours, what can the government claim without asking, and how will things like our images be used without our consent.

Not that there’s anything we can do about it, apparently, but…the more you know?

New Study Finds Netflix May Be to Blame for the Falling Fertility Rate in the US

It’s funny, just a few years ago, the term “Netflix and chill” was synonymous with hooking up. Now, it seems Netflix may be to blame for the falling fertility rate in the US. How the tables do turn.

Wall Street Journal conducted a survey for the story, which showed that an incredible 25 percent of respondents have declined sex in favor of binge-watching a show in the last six months.

The problem arises particularly from streaming services; back when regular tv ruled mass entertainment, you could only watch one episode at a time, and each episode was filled with commercial breaks. The reward part of your brain wasn’t nearly so activated.

“Now, if you’re watching something streaming, the next episode is immediately available, and there are no commercials where you could look over and say, ‘Honey, you look cute tonight,’” explained Jean Twenge, Ph.D., who authored a 2017 study on the topic.

While it is true that Americans are having fewer babies than ever before in history, it’s not entirely clear that Netflix is playing a direct role in the phenomenon. Technology in general, maybe (and like, a thousand other major societal factors). For every couple binging Netflix, there’s another couple scrolling through social media in bed.

“There has never been a time you could feel more alone with your partner right next to you,” clinical psychologist Dr. Megan Fleming said.

Netflix commented on the study to deny that they’re contributing to the lack of American babies.

“We take pride in being part of the cultural zeitgeist, but getting credit for a decadeslong decline in sex is beyond even our programming abilities,” a spokesperson said.

That’s ok, Netflix spokesperson. It’s good to have goals.

These Gorillas Actually Posed for Selfies with Anti-Poaching Rangers

The 600 rangers at the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo have a serious task: protecting the park’s animals from poachers. And it’s clear that some of the rangers have formed strong bonds with some of the park’s gorillas.

The rangers routinely take selfies with the beautiful animals and it’s obvious that there is a whole lot of mutual trust and admiration there.

This is frankly amazing.

Here’What 8 Celebs Were Like Before They Became Famous

Look, many celebrities may seem larger than life, but don’t let the glitz and glamour fool you. There are TEAMS of people behind the scenes making sure they look great for the cameras and making it seem like they live a life that people THINK they would envy. And yeah, being a celeb does have its benefits. But don’t get the reality twisted. There’s a lot about it that is completely fiction.

Still, what about when people weren’t famous? What were they like?

These Reddit users reveal the celebs they knew before they hit it big… and not all of it is flattering.

1. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen

I saw Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen at Thanksgivings with both of our families or occasionally met up with them and their family if we visited LA.

They’re really good girls that dealt with a lot of shit for trying to grow up and live a normal life while also being well recognized and chased around everywhere they went.

And by extension, I also know their sister Lizzie, who is getting close to the same attention as the twins got, but is able to handle it better since she’s obviously an adult now and can process things better than if she were much younger.

2. Snoop Dogg

Not me, but my aunt. She knew Snoop during high school, and at the time everyone there were getting into colors. She decided to join in, tied a bandana to her arm.

Later in the day he took it from her, without a word. Turns out that people wearing her color were being hunted down.

Overall, pretty cool dude. I hear he hasn’t changed much.

3. Neil Patrick Harris

Went to high school with Neil Patrick Harris. He wasn’t a bad dude, but wasn’t humble in the least.

He was still working on Doogie Howser. When he was at school, he wasn’t allowed to be himself, surrounded by fans and others.

He had the nickname of Drama Dork by some of the other cliques.

He hasn’t gone to one of the reunions.

4. Tom Hanks

My dad interned with Tom Hanks when he first started out at the Great Lakes Shakespeare Festival. He was always very kind and charismatic with everyone, and just a constant ball of energy.

When his son Colin was born, he proudly showed him off to everybody. he was probably just days old.

About 3 years ago, there was a reunion of all the Great Lakes interns. My dad went, not knowing if he was going to show up and if he did, if he’d remember him.

But not only did he show up, he approached my dad and remembered him by his full name.

He is honestly just a really great man.

5. Shaquille O’Neal

Not me, but my dad used to be friends and play basketball with Shaquille O’Neal when they were around 13.

They lived a couple houses away from each other at one point. My dad always resorted to clinging to his leg to keep him from scoring.

He was a tank compared to my dad even back then.

6. Justin Bieber

Went to elementary school with Justin Bieber.

He was a total bully and a giant asshat but for some reason he took a liking to me and invited me to all his birthdays.

A funny memory I have is of him making fun of some kid on the stairwell and then tripping and falling down the stairs and then crying all the way to the Principals Office.

He has always been a total douche.

7. Chris Evans

Chris Evans went to school in Sudbury, which is a couple towns over.

I worked with his sister and didn’t know she was his sister, and one day she wouldn’t shut up about his “porn stache” and I just turned to her and went “dude why do you care so much about Chris Evans mustache” and she then told me she was his sister.

Then showed me a video of him that Scarlett Johansson had just texted to her.

That was a weird day.

8. Eminem

I lived in the same neighborhood as Eminem growing up.

He was a few years older than me but since we both kinda stand out we ended up hanging out with the same people a few times before he got famous famous, though he was already locally well known. We weren’t friends though.

He was pretty serious and kinda seemed like a recluse but definitely not afraid to speak his mind if he felt it necessary.

Never exchanged more than “sup” though.
