Guinness Goes Green: Beer Giant to Stop Using Plastic Packaging

Plastic waste is one of the biggest environmental issues of our time, and one of the most famous beer brands in the entire world is taking a huge step towards being part of the solution: they’re going to stop using plastic packaging materials altogether!

The manufacturer of Guinness, Diageo, announced that they’re getting rid of their plastic beer packaging and will replace it with cardboard that is 100% recyclable or biodegradable. That’s great news!

The company also announced it is investing $21 million (U.S.) into the new project, and that getting rid of plastic rings and shrink wrap will remove the equivalent of 40 million plastic bottles from its operations.

Diageo owns Harp and Smithwick’s as well and plans to move away from plastic on those brands, too. The sustainable beer packs are supposed to debut in Ireland in August 2019 and expand to the rest of the world in 2020.

Guinness is good for you 😉 The maker of Guinness is eliminating all plastic packaging for its products. 🙂 https://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/guinness-diageo-beer-plastic-free-packaging-a8869941.html

Oliver Loomes, the director of Diageo in Ireland, said, “Managing our environmental impact is important for the planet and the financial sustainability of our business. We already have one of the most sustainable breweries in the world at St. James’s Gate and we are now leading the way in sustainable packaging. This is good news for the environment and for our brand.”

Good work Guinness! Now head to the pub and order a couple to celebrate!

From a young age, girls are sent the message that they have to either be girly-girls or tomboys. There’s no in between and there’s no overlapping.

Well, not anymore.

Mitchell said, “My youngest daughter is 8 and she is trying softball this year for the first time. We were at practice a few weeks ago and I was talking with the other moms. I was saying that I hoped Paislee learned to love the game because she was athletic. One of the moms told me that she was not athletic, that she was a girly-girl.”

She added, “I couldn’t sleep that night. All I could think was, ‘Why does she have to choose?’ I played every sport my school offered and wore lipstick to every game. So the next day we went to the studio and created her shot.”

After posting shots of her daughter Paislee on Facebook, the requests from other moms came flooding in.

Artist Finds Her Childhood Bully Online and Shares the Results

Many of us get picked on at a young age in school by bullies and as we grow up, we never forget their name or their face.

For those who are bullied, many of the things people have said to us stay with us as we get older and torment us for years. It’s hard to completely let go of things that had such an emotional impact on you, especially as a kid. Canadian artist Meghan Lands was bullied and tormented for years–and she has constantly tried to forget her past.

Lands told Bored Panda:

“I think many of us have been either picked on or the pick-onner at some point in our lives. Growing up is tough to begin with, and in school we have to contend with this social pecking order that’s constantly reasserting or reorganizing itself.”

Lands decided to look up her bully on Facebook, all these years later, to see what she looked like now and what she was up to. Instead of sharing what she found, she decided to showcase it through a comic strip that has since gone viral on Tumblr.

Many people online could relate to Lands’ comics on a deep level. Others shared some advice.

Women Share Stories of Times Complete Strangers Saved The Day

Many times in society, throughout the world, women feel as though they are unsafe when they’re walking anywhere alone.

With countless stories in the media, such as those part of the #MeToo and Times Up movements, have shined a light onto sexual assault and harassment–we truly get a sense of the dangers some women have when around men who can’t take “no for an answer.” If you ask any woman, anywhere in the world, if they’ve ever felt unsafe when walking alone–I guarantee you they’ll have a story (or five) of times they were followed, cat-called, or harassed by a man. But, instead of sharing stories that make you fear for your own safety, women have begun sharing stories of how women–mostly complete strangers–have saved them, helped them, or kept them away from attackers and stalkers in public.

Facebook user Alexis Tyler shared three Tumblr posts about women who had strangers help them out when they were being followed or harassed.

Each story shows the bravery of the women who saw another woman in danger and the gratefulness of the women who received protection from someone they had never even met before.

People on Facebook felt inspired to share their own stories of strangers who had saved them and their thankfulness.

God Bless the women of the world who say something when they see something–you make us all feel a little more safe in this dark, cruel world.

Powerful Twitter Thread Explains Why You Shouldn’t Always Wait for Your Friends to Ask for Help

With all of the conversations surrounding mental health and mental illnesses being on the forefront, there are many people who are sharing their powerful advice about helping your friends and family who are struggling.

Many believe that if a friend asks for help, that is your cue to step up and be by their side to support them. But, there are some who believe that if a friend is in need, and you’re aware of this, you shouldn’t wait for them to ask for help. Sometimes, many who are suffering don’t feel as though they should ask for help–or, that they’re worthy of having you help and support them. Instead, sometimes, you should try and help them without being asked or requested.

One writer’s Twitter thread showcased the powerful meaning behind “stepping up” as a friend when someone you love is in need.

Sheila O’Malley was going through a hard time after her dad passed away. She was unable to unpack her new apartment because she was suffering and grieving for such a long period of time–as many of us do when we lose someone close to us.

Note: this article was originally published by our friends at Woke Sloth. Tweets are from Sheila O’Malley which you can follow here: @sheilakathleen

Her friend, David, decided to step up without Sheila asking and rallied his friends together.

He took the risk to help out his struggling friend.

And they delivered.

They also made sure to keep their judgments to themselves and be there solely to support their friend.

Sometimes, people don’t feel comfortable asking for help and when this happens, taking the risk to help them anyway can change their world.
