15+ Words That Are Literally Their Own Opposites

I truly love the English language and am the type of person who can become endlessly fascinated by a word. Perhaps that’s why I became a writer.

Did you know there’s a special type of word known as a “contronym” –  a word that is its own antonym.

#1. Sanction

You can use it to “give official permission or approval for an action” or “impose a penalty on.”

#2. Cleave

“To cling to or adhere” or “to split or sever,” depending on how you use it.

#3. Left

What’s left or we have left? One means “remaining” and the other “departed.”

#4. Go

“To proceed,” of course, but it can also mean “to give out or fail.”

#5. Clip

You can use a clip to “bind things together” or you can “separate” coupons from the paper by clipping them.

You can apply dust or remove dust, depending on the context – are you dusting crops or furniture?

#7. Weather

It can mean “to withstand or come safely through,” as with a storm, or conversely, “to be worn away.”

#8. Out of

“I hardly get out of the house anymore since I work out of my home” You’re referring to both “outside” and “inside” with the same phrase.

#9. Oversight

“Supervise” or “to fail to see or observe; to pass over without noticing; to disregard, ignore” – true opposites!

#10. Continue

We generally use it to mean to persist in doing something, though in the legal system, it means to stop a proceeding, if only temporarily.

#11. Out

It means both visible (the moon was out) and invisible (the lights are out).

#12. Screen

It means both “to show” (a film) or “to hide” (something unsightly).

#13. Hold up

This phrase can mean “to support” or “to hinder.”

#14. Off

You can turn something off (deactivated) or an alarm can go off (activated) without changing a thing!

#15. Toss out

“To suggest” and also “to discard.”

#16. Help

Most often used as “assist” but can also be used to mean “prevent” – I couldn’t help myself.

#17. Fast

It can mean both “moving rapidly” and “fixed, unmoving,” as in holding fast.

Go forth and sound smarter, people!

Long-Lost Dog Siblings Reunite, and They Recognize Each Other Instantly

Adopting a dog is awesome, but the one drawback is that you don’t often know much about where the dog came from. Shelters might tell you about the dog’s temperament or a little about its past, but they won’t know things like what siblings your dog might have floating around out there.

That’s what makes these stories so special – against ridiculous odds, these dogs who once knew each other were somehow reunited. And, thankfully, their owners were able to capture the moment on camera.

Jonathan Reed loved his wife…

Jonathan Reed loved his wife so much that when she died, he moved into her tomb. He decorated it like a home and even brought their parrot to live with them. “My only pleasure is to sit here with all that is left of her.”

While sitting down while…

While sitting down while peeing is getting more and more popular, it’s also good and healthy for men. It helps emptying the bladder, and thus can prevent bladder stones and urinary tract infections. Claims that it could prevent prostate problems however are yet to be verified.

IKEA Told Kids to Bully a Plant for 30 Days. The Results Are Jaw-Dropping

In order to raise awareness about Anti-Bullying Day on May 4th, IKEA UAE conducted a truly unique experiment. They took two identical plants and placed them in a local school.

Both plants were cared for in the same way. They both had the same water, sunlight, and fertilizers. Their conditions were entirely the same except for one single notable exception – students were encouraged to pay regular compliments to one plant and to relentlessly bully the other.

After 30 days, the results were pretty clear. While the complimented plant thrived, the bullied plant showed significant signs of struggle with discolored, drooping leaves.

Ever wonder just how damaging bullying can be? What if you bullied a plant nonstop for a whole month?

IKEA decided to test this out as part of its campaign to raise awareness about Anti-Bullying Day on May 4th in the Middle East.

It just goes to show how much power our words can have. I mean, if hurtful words can do this much damage to a plant, just imagine what they do to a person.

19 Parents Share the Secrets That Would Crush Their Children’s Souls

As a parent, you sometimes have to keep certain things hidden from your kids because they’re not ready to handle that information. Things like financial troubles, marital problems, death of a pet – sometimes it’s easier to just make something up and shield them from the bitter truth until they’re older.

That’s exactly what these 19 parents did to their kiddos. Take a look at some of the most life-changing secrets mothers and fathers decided to keep to themselves. Makes me wonder…what did my parents hide from me?

1. Some secrets are best kept secrets…

My nephews are like my own boys, and they’re my sisters kids. She married (and divorced) their father, a psychopathic abusive man. If the boys knew just what kind of abuse their father did to them… it would kill them. They both have broken noses because of him… and it happened when they were both under 4 years old.

2. Such a kind heart

So, this is the other way around, but during my freshman year of high school, my parents were experiencing financial difficulty (piles of medical bills for my mom’s cancer, slowing business for my dad). In an attempt to save them money, I decided to use as little lunch money as possible. So, I essentially stopped eating breakfast, ate only pretzels and water for lunch, and had minimal servings for dinner. My parents clearly noticed the change in my appearance but assumed it was because of puberty. I feel like if I ever told my parents, especially my mom, it would absolutely break their hearts.

3. Explore away

My teenage football star son will occasionally put on my wife’s dresses and hang around the house. He acts like he is being funny but he does it for hours. We noticed recently that he also does it sometimes when no one is home (dresses re-arranged, not put on hangers perfectly). So he’s a masculine, studly, cross dressing football star in HS. This would destroy him if it got out. We think it’s OK and are happy to let him explore.

4. Bio mom

Something I will never tell them is that their biological mom told me that she had the second kid because she “didn’t get enough child support with only one kid”. Nor will I let them know that she hated them so much that she refused to see the kids for over 2 years. They where 1,5 and 2,5 y/o when she left. (At this point, she has been seeing them once every 2 weeks, things are going.. well.. OK-ish. They still call me mommy and call her by her name.)

5. RIP

I once killed my daughter’s hamster…she was at her grandma’s house overnight and I decided to air out her room while she was gone. I opened her window, but forgot to close it, unfortunately, this was during a Canadian winter…I replaced the hamster just in time, she never noticed, but I still feel bad about it years later.

6. hehe

My aunt accidentally filmed one of her sons continually rub his crotch and gooch area and smell it followed by digging for nose berries and feasting on them. This was all while filming her youngest son trying to master Rich Girl on the new Just Dance game complete with lyrics

7. Love is love

My youngest daughter probably isn’t mine. I love her just the same.

8. Good plan

My son has a ciliary condition that might affect his ability to have children. That’ll be bad for him when he’s old enough to want a family. I don’t dare tell him too soon (he’s only 4 now), because I don’t want him going through high school/college thinking he can’t get a girl pregnant.

9. Ha!

I know his online username, it could ruin his social life if I told it to his facebook friends.

10. Surgery is an option, if he really wants

My child was born with breasts that lactated. His is big now and always had extra fat cells there. He is really self conscious about it and I have always kept that piece of information from him. Unfortunately we live in such an appearance important culture. I try to teach him what being a quality human being is and his value is more than the superficial.

Extremely Rare “Blonde” Zebra Photographed in the African Wild

“Blonde” zebras, or zebras that are striped white and a sort of golden-yellow color, are extremely rare. But sightings of a rare “blonde” zebra in the Serengeti National Park seem to confirm that, if accepted by their herd, the lighter-colored version can survive in the wild without issue.

The photographs were taken by National Geographic photographer Sergio Pitamitz, who was out to capture images of migrating zebras when he saw what looked like an all-white member of the striped crowd.

At closer glance, he saw a white-and-gold striped animal drinking from a watering hole. He told National Geographic about the experience.

“At first I thought it was a zebra that had rolled in the dust.”

When it didn’t wash off in the water, though, he realized he was looking at something special.

Scientists think the zebra has partial albinism, a genetic condition that leads to a lack of melanin. It’s been recorded in a number of animals, from orangutans to penguins. The opposite condition, melanism, has also been seen in the animal world – it turns normally lighter colored animals so dark as to nearly be black.

Albinism is rare to see it in the wild, though, since albino animals are much easier to spot than their camouflaged relatives. Until now, no one was sure whether an albino zebra could survive outside captivity. Zebra stripes actually aren’t for camouflage or climate control, so not having black stripes hypothetically shouldn’t affect a zebra’s ability to survive – scientists just weren’t sure whether an albino zebra would be accepted by the herd.

The pictures prove that doesn’t seem to be an issue.

Fun fact: Each zebra’s pattern is unique, like a fingerprint, so maybe they don’t notice how different this one is – melanistic and even spotted zebras have been previously seen in the wild.

Another fun fact: there are three species of zebra – plains zebras, mountain zebras, and Grevy’s zebra – and all have slightly different markings.

Nice to think that animal species aren’t bothered by their differences, instead accepting the fact that none of them look the same. Humans could learn a thing or two!

There’s a Psychological Reason Why Your Anxiety Gets Worse When Good Things Happen

Anxiety is a funny thing. And by “funny,” I mean “a serious mindf***.”

How else would you explain the fact that your anxiety can actually get WORSE when something good happens to you. Seriously, there’s just no winning with this, is there?

Clinical psychologist Carla Marie Manly explained to HuffPost why this often happens to people with anxiety:

“Anxiety can be a bit tricky, as it’s a primitive response that’s hard-wired into the brain. The brain’s fear circuit works very quickly, and it doesn’t always pause to differentiate between good anxiety and bad.”

When something good happens, it triggers very similar physical symptoms to those that you associate with panic or fear, Carla said. Excitement and anxiety are very similar, as far as your body is concerned.

Also, the mere sensation of happiness can cause fear if you’re not really used to feeling that way. It’s new and unfamiliar — an anxious person’s worst enemy. Furthermore, many people worry that something good happening MUST mean that something bad is going to happen next.

It sucks to feel overcome by anxiety when you feel like you should be jumping for joy. But the first key to moving past the feeling is acknowledging and accepting it, Carla explained. Then practice enjoying any little piece of good news that comes your way — and be patient with yourself.

“It’s natural for the psyche to want to go back to old thought patterns, so this new one will take time and patience to become hard-wired into the brain.”

Time and patience – that’s some solid advice.
