Try Doing These 10 Activities Alone at Least Once in Your Life

We are a social species…but that doesn’t mean we don’t need our alone time. Certain activities, like going to the movies or eating at a restaurant, are often done in the company of others, but that doesn’t mean it’s wrong to do them alone!

Here are 10 other things that you may have been intimidated to do alone, but that are definitely worth pushing out of your comfort zone for.

#10. Check out your favorite band – or find a new one.

If you’re bored after a set and want to go, you can. If you’re totally digging the band and want to stick around for autographs, no one is going to complain. Perfection!

#9. Go see a play or musical.

I have trouble finding people who are interested in local theatre or have the time and money to splurge on the latest touring show every once in a while – but just like the movies, why miss out on something you’re dying to see just because you don’t want to go alone? You shouldn’t!

#8. Go to an amusement park.

Spend a day in the sun, riding the rides you want and not having to share your funnel cake. Perfection.

#7. Learn a new skill or sport.

Take art classes or join an archery club – you never know when you’ll find something you love and meet interesting new people in the process.

#6. Volunteer.

You’ll meet other like-minded people and engage with a cause you believe in. What could be better than that?

#5. Travel.

Society will try to convince you that traveling alone – especially if you’re a woman – is dangerous and ill-advised. If you’re careful, it’s not, and if you have the money and the time, there’s no better way to spend it.

#4. Take a hike.

It’s important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings to ensure your safety, but don’t let the fear of going alone hold you back from the awe-inspiring experience of trekking through nature, solo.

#3. Sign up for a dance class.

It’s great exercise and you might like it – why not give it a try!

#2. Go out to dinner.

Grab a good book or just watch the other people – not having a companion is no reason to rob yourself of the experience of dining out. Even if you do have an SO, going alone can be a liberating experience. Do things on your own timetable and order dessert without checking around first.

#1. Explore a museum.

Chances are that this is something you would do if you found yourself out of town on your own, but something you might not think to do in your hometown – except why not? Even if you’ve been in your local museums before there are always traveling exhibits, and having someone along doesn’t make learning any more or less fun.

What do you think? Are you going to try some? I’ve never eaten out alone in a sit-down restaurant so maybe that will be next on my list!

This 75-Year-Old Who Naps with Shelter Cats is Living His Best Life

What are your retirement plans? Most of us probably haven’t thought that far ahead, but after you see what this guy does every day, you might get inspired to retire early.

Meet 75-year-old volunteer Terry Lauerman and the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who first shared the photos of Terry interacting – and snoozing – with some of their cats.

“We are so lucky to have a human like Terry,” they wrote in the Facebook post above. “Terry just came along one day and introduced himself. He said he’d like to brush cats. Eventually it became everyday. He brushes all of the cats, and can tell you about all of their likes and dislikes. He also accidentally falls asleep most days. We don’t mind – cats need this! Terry is a wonderful volunteer.”

Safe Haven focuses on saving special needs cats that would have been euthanized immediately at other facilities – even FIV cats. The felines live in a cage-free sanctuary with furniture, televisions, and bedrooms so they can feel as if they live in a cat-run home, Elizabeth Feldhausen, the shelter’s director, tells HuffPost.

They depend on the time and dedication of understanding volunteers like Lauerman to give the cats everything they need, and Terry himself spend about three hours a day helping to make the cats feel loved.

“He sleeps for about an hour, then he’ll wake up and switch cats. He said the brushes is as great of an experience for him as it is for them.”

Terry and Elizabeth Feldhausen, the spokesperson for the shelter, are shocked that their pictures have garnered so much attention from cat lovers around the world, but they’re thankful, too – the shelter has received more than $20k in donations since the original post went viral.

So, now you know what to do with your life once your working days are done. Watch the grandkids in the morning, if you want, but the head down to your local shelter, grab a couple of warm, furry bodies, and cuddle up for the afternoon.

Thanks, Terry. You’re a true hero.

Here’s Why Supreme Court Justices Serve Life Terms

Supreme Court nominations – and the justices themselves – have been a hot button issue lately. They’ve come under increased scrutiny in recent years due to the fact that once approved, they serve for life. With increasing life spans for both men and women, justices can now be expected to serve an average of 35 years, much longer than the 16 years they served in the past, which mean the choices are more important than ever.

If you’ve never thought about why the appointment to the highest court in the land could potentially be one of the longest, well, here’s your chance to get answers to the question you never thought to ask. And if you have – congrats! And here we go…

First off, the Constitution doesn’t necessarily say they have to serve until the die or retire. Article III says that judges “shall hold their offices during good behavior,” which technically means there’s no term limit, but a justice could potentially be removed for dancing naked on tables or whatever. Not many have – in the history of the United States, only 15 federal judges have ever been impeached (8 of them removed).

The only Supreme Court justice that Congress even tried to remove was Samuel Chase, and that was back in 1796. He was impeached by the House of Representatives for, among other things, promoting his political views from the bench, but he was acquitted on all counts by the Senate. He remained a Supreme Court justice until his death in 1811.

The reasoning behind making the appointments for life is to attempt to shield the court from partisan politics. The court is supposed to act as a check against the powers of Congress and the president, which means judges who don’t have to worry about being replaced in a changing of the guard should be able to rule without feeling political pressure. There is even data that suggests justices tend to shift leftward as they age, and with a lifetime appointment, they can’t be replaced by a more conservative judge if they change their views.

Alexander Hamilton weighed in on the decision in Federalist No.78, saying that the lack of term limits “is the best expedient which can be devised in any government, to secure a steady, upright and impartial administration of the laws. The judiciary is in continual jeopardy of being overpowered, awed, or influenced by its coordinate branches, and nothing can contribute so much to its firmness and independence as permanency in office.”

Which is all to say, the lifetime appointments of Supreme Court justices might be a longstanding tradition, but it’s not law – nor is it the norm in other parts of the world. Most democracies employ either term limits or mandatory retirement ages, and there have been recent proposals to implement similar polices here. Term limits could combat imbalances like we’re currently seeing implemented, which would also make the political stakes for appointments slightly lower.

That said, there are still plenty of kinks to work out (hypothetically, of course) – like, if all of the justices were appointed at roughly the same time or were roughly the same age, it would be possible for a single president to end up nominating most of the Court, etc.

I’m not sure it’s something we’ll see anytime soon, but it is interesting to note that it’s being discussed – and that there’s nothing in the Constitution to prevent it.
