Auction of Disney Memorabilia Includes Animatronic ‘It’s a Small World’ Doll

Attention Disney fans: Van Eaton Galleries has announced they will be auctioning off over 1000 Disneyland artifacts, including a rare item the likes of which has never been seen on the auction block before. An original figure from the “It’s a Small World” ride, estimated to go for $80,000 to $90,000, is the first complete Disneyland audio-animatronic doll ever offered for sale.

In addition to the souvenir from one of Disney’s most iconic attractions, the auction will feature other pieces of memorabilia from early in the park’s history. An original stretch painting from the “Haunted Mansion” is expected to go for $30,000 to $40,000, a devil prop from “Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride” for $8,000 to $10,000, and an animatronic sparrow from the “Enchanted Tiki Room” is pegged at $35,000 to $45,000. The list of items also includes original ride models, costumes, concept art, attraction posters, and a piece of carpet from Walt Disney’s apartment in the park.

Bidding is scheduled to take place online and in person at the Van Eaton Galleries in Los Angeles on November 19. Van Eaton regularly hosts Disney-centric auctions, so if you aren’t able to bid on a piece of history from the park this November, there’s always next time. Meanwhile, the public is invited to browse the collection at their gallery from now until auction day.

10 Historic Things That Happened on Halloween

filed under: halloween, Lists

According to the ancient pagans (not to mention contemporary Wicca observers), Halloween is when the “veil” between the living and spirit worlds is at its thinnest, meaning the day is ripe for supernatural occurrences, haunting encounters, and tragic events. Here are 10 Halloween happenings that show October 31 isn’t just a spooky holiday.

1. POLLS OPEN ON THE 11TH AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION // HALLOWEEN 1828

How’s this for a nightmare: 34 days of Election Day.

No matter how horrifying our presidential politics get in 2016, at least the nation can look forward to the end of the campaign season once the polls close on November 8. This wasn’t always the case in America. Before the 1848 election, states were allowed to hold their voting at any time over several weeks. Back then—when news traveled slowly and the nation’s harvesting patterns had an even stronger influence on the political schedule—federal law gave states 34 days to conduct the election before the Electoral College got together on the first Wednesday of December.

Voting in those early contests obviously tended to kick off in late October or early November, but only two—1800 and 1828—saw polls open on All Hallows’ Eve. The latter, 1828, was a particularly nasty (not to mention historically significant) election that saw the populist outsider candidate, Andrew Jackson, knock out the incumbent East Coast elite, John Quincy Adams. In some ways, this rematch of the 1824 presidential election cast the die for the politics we have today.

The nation was still young, but the 1828 contest firmly established the two party system and saw the debut of deeply personal attacks and concerted rumormongering—Adams supporters labeled Jackson, the eventual winner, a war criminal, and called his wife Rachel an “adulteress.” Fueling the increase in vitriol was the proliferation of party-affiliated press organs, which relied heavily on innuendo and conspiracy. These were not newspapers, but rather the 19th century equivalent of Facebook groups that share memes.

2. HUNDREDS OF CREEK INDIANS KILLED IN THE WRECK OF THE MONMOUTH // HALLOWEEN 1837

With strict propriety of language, we might call the awful catastrophe about to be particularized, a massacre, a wholesale assassination, or anything else but an accident.
Lloyd’s Steamboat Directory, And Disasters on the Western Waters (1856)

The situation was already dire for the 700 or so members of the Creek tribe crammed onto the Monmouth on a very dark October 31, 1837. After most of the Creek had been forcibly deported from their homeland in the Southern United States following the “Creek Indian War of 1836,” a few had been allowed to stay behind while their families were helping fight the Seminoles in Florida. After the fighters returned, the remaining Creek were put on boats to take them up the Mississippi, including one called the Monmouth.

As the overcrowded Monmouth steamed north of Baton Rouge, it crashed into another steamship, the Warren, which was towing another boat called the Trenton. According to Lloyd’s Steamboat Disasters, “such was the violence of the concussion, that the Monmouth immediately sunk.” It is estimated that at least half of the Monmouth’s passengers perished in the catastrophe, though records are scarce because no government agencies ever investigated the incident.

3. NEVADA IS ADMITTED AS THE 36TH STATE // HALLOWEEN 1864

For obvious reasons, the states that left the Union during the American Civil War tend to get more attention than the ones that joined the United States during the conflict. Nevada is one of only two—West Virginia is the other—to attain statehood while the North and South were fighting. (Thus Nevada’s claim as the “battle born” state.)

One common explanation is Abraham Lincoln and the Union needed the Silver State’s mineral wealth. Not exactly. Nevada was already a Union territory, so Abe had the silver. Besides, by late 1864, the war was nearly won. What Lincoln actually needed was Nevada’s votes—both in the upcoming 1864 Presidential Election and for the push to end slavery with ratification of the 13th Amendment.

4. BRITAIN BREAKS THE OTTOMANS AT THE BATTLE OF BEERSHEBA // HALLOWEEN 1917

One of the Great War’s lesser known clashes, the Battle of Beersheba is particularly revered by cavalry enthusiasts and Australian World War I buffs. That’s because, as the sun set on a day of fierce skirmishes in the Negev Desert, a brigade of Aussie light horsemen staged what’s remembered as the “Last Great Cavalry Charge” and helped secure a pivotal victory for the Allied Powers.

After three years of bloody stalemate and fruitless conflict across Europe, the Allied Powers had almost nothing to show for it. The recent introduction of American troops had failed to break the deadlock on the continent, and in fall of 1917, it looked like another year of fighting with no measurable gain. But the offensive at Beersheba, just 50 miles south of Ottoman-controlled Jerusalem, ended the stalemate in the Middle Eastern theatre and breathed new life into the British war effort.

After the British Egyptian Expeditionary Force—comprised of troops from England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, and India—broke the Turkish lines at Beersheba, the British pushed deeper into Palestine and eventually captured Jerusalem in December. Lloyd George, the Prime Minister at the time, called it “a Christmas present for the British people.”

5. THE END OF THE DEADLIEST MONTH OF SPANISH INFLUENZA // HALLOWEEN 1918

With a worldwide death toll of up to 50 million people, the Spanish Influenza is remembered as the most devastating pandemic in human history. In the United States, where an estimated 675,000 Americans perished during the plague, no single month was more deadly than October 1918. No one knows exactly what caused the so-called Death Spike, but nearly 200,000 people died during that gruesome October. One compelling explanation: high dosages of aspirin.

6. AFTER “MARCH ON ROME” BENITO MUSSOLINI’S TRIUMPHANT PARADE // HALLOWEEN 1922

First, a bit of housekeeping: Benito Mussolini, notorious tough guy that he was, did not march anywhere. No, while a band of 20,000 or so Blackshirts did actually hoof it to the Italian capital, Il Duce took an overnight train from Milan. By the time his followers reached the Eternal City, Mussolini was already in control. On October 29, King Victor Emmanuel III summoned the 39-year-old to Rome to form a government. Ostensibly the head of a coalition government, the empowered Mussolini set about consolidating his power and building his own personal mythology. On October 31, to showcase the growing strength of his Fascist Party, the newly appointed premier conducted a parade of Blackshirts through the streets of Rome.

7. THE STRANGE DEATH OF HARRY HOUDINI // HALLOWEEN 1926

It’s the gut-punch known round the world. In late October 1926, Harry Houdini visited McGill University in Montreal and gave a lecture on fraudulent spiritualism to students and faculty. On Friday, October 22, Houdini invited several McGill students to his dressing room at the Princess Theater, and while eyewitness accounts differ on the matter of what came next, this much is clear: A student named Joselyn Gordon Whitehead delivered several heavy body blows to the famed magician’s midsection. A little over a week later, the 52-year-old Houdini was dead.

The official cause of death was diffuse peritonitis, an abdominal infection associated with a ruptured appendix, and at first, the doctors blamed the punch for Houdini’s sudden demise. Later researchers generally agree that, at worst, it prevented Houdini from going to the hospital for his stomach pains, and it was largely a case of bad timing.

8. SINKING OF THE REUBEN JAMES BY GERMAN U-BOAT // HALLOWEEN 1941

Have you heard of a ship called the good Reuben James
Manned by hard fighting men both of honor and fame?
She flew the Stars and Stripes of the land of the free
But tonight she’s in her grave at the bottom of the sea.
Woody Guthrie, 1942

In almost every way, the USS Reuben James was an unremarkable destroyer assigned to protect supply shipments on the Atlantic after the start of World War II. Sure, the 22-year-old warship had sailed the seven seas, but mostly in the form of peacetime patrols and low stakes operations. Nothing flashy or fraught. So how exactly did it end up in Woody Guthrie’s song?

On October 31, 1941, just over a month before the Pearl Harbor attack and America’s formal entry into World War II, the Reuben James became the first U.S. Navy ship sunk during the conflict. Of the nearly 150 crewmen aboard, only 44 survived the attack.

9. THE BEST INDIVIDUAL GAME OF THE BEST INDIVIDUAL FOOTBALL SEASON OF ALL TIME // OCTOBER 1943

Slingin’ Sammy Baugh did it all on the gridiron. And in 1943, he did it all better than anyone had ever done it before—leading the league in passing, punting, and interceptions—as part of a campaign football historians consider the single greatest individual season in the history of the sport. The Redskins’ Baugh registered some incredible performances that season—his four touchdown/four interception game against Detroit was remarkable for its gaudy symmetry—but none demonstrated his dominance as a passer more than his massive day against the Brooklyn Dodgers on Halloween 1943.

The final score at Ebbets Field that day was 48-10, with Baugh producing an NFL-record 376 yards and six touchdown passes—the first time in pro football history that a quarterback threw six TDs in a single game. Baugh and Washington would go on to win the NFL’s Eastern Division before losing to Sid Luckman and the Chicago Bears in the title game. Incredibly, Luckman would also go on to edge out Baugh for the 1943 MVP award, too.

10. “MONSTER MASH” BY BOBBY PICKETT AND THE CRYPT-KICKERS IS AT THE TOP OF THE BILLBOARD 100 // HALLOWEEN 1962

A half century after it first debuted, “Monster Mash” remains the undisputed anthem of the spooky season. (Very close second: “Thriller.”) We may take it for granted these days, but there was a time when the “graveyard smash” wasn’t on repeat at every Halloween party in the land. Originally released in August 1962, this now evergreen holiday hit was actually the product of two early-1960s fads: Twist-style dance records and the movie monster craze. The song hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on October 20 and stayed there for two weeks.

8 Haunted Retail Stores Where You Can Browse for Ghosts

If you think that haunted houses and cemeteries are the only places spirits reside, get ready to call your local Ghostbusters. All across America, rumors swirl surrounding weird experiences at some of the most trafficked places in the country—retail stores! Want to make your shopping experience just a little bit creepier? Check out any of these locales below.

1. PIKE PLACE MARKET // SEATTLE

As one of the most famous public markets in the country, Pike Place Market is known for a lot of things: fresh coffee, fresher fish, and paranormal activity. The Seattle Times reported on a number of figures who supposedly walk through walls or vanish into thin air—one older gentleman named Frank apparently likes to introduce himself to the living outside of a restroom at the Alibi Room. Various other spirits also have names, like Princess Angeline, Madame Nora, and the “Fat Lady Barber.”

At one point in the early 1900s, one section of the market was home to a mortuary. Currently operating in the basement of that space is Kells Irish Restaurant and Pub. Its manager, Patrick McAleese, recalled some eerie instances to the Times, such as a wall mirror inexplicably shattering, only to have the shards fall into a neat pile. “You think someone must be pulling your leg,” he said. “But then you don’t see anyone.”

2. COS // NEW YORK CITY

New Yorkers can brush elbows with a ghost while doing some light shopping in Soho. The legend dates back to 1799, when Gulielma Elmore Sands tried to elope with her fellow boardinghouse tenant, Levi Weeks. Eleven days later, her body was found at the bottom of the well in Lispenard’s Meadow—which is now 129 Spring Street. Since 2014, it’s been the site of a COS retail store.

Levi was arrested, tried, and acquitted in the first major murder trial in America that was fully recorded by a court stenographer. His attorneys? Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr! But Sands’s ghost is said to roam the area, a warning to other girls who might try to run off with their lovers. Curious shoppers can still see the well in COS—just head to the back of the men’s department in the basement.

3. CHERRYVALE MALL // ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS

Since its opening in 1973, the CherryVale Mall in Rockford, Illinois has been the site of some spooky vibes. The Rock River Times noted that mall employees reported feeling watched or followed after the venue closed at night. Others have reported that certain stores would be a mess in the morning, with clothing scattered or displays knocked over, even if the space was cleaned before being locked up. And, on an even more unsettling note, some even claimed that bathroom doors were held shut by an unknown force.

4. KMART // COEUR D’ALENE, IDAHO

OK, technically the Kmart in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho isn’t haunted—but one of its cash registers reportedly is! Employee Tamara Dobbs told the Coeur d’Alene Press that from her very first day at the store, she noticed register No. 2 was strange. Specifically, that it was haunted by a male presence and, she claims, “He monkeys with all the sales.”

The store’s manager, Lauren Larson, noted that employees “just don’t like to be assigned to work on it” because it frequently freezes, clears its memory, and transactions are lost. In his words, the register is “an independent thinker” that “loses its mind,” though technicians can’t seem to find a specific problem with the machine.

5. BROWSE AWHILE BOOKS // TIPP CITY, OHIO

Browse Awhile Books, which specializes in rare and out-of-print books, is rumored to be home to as many as 13 ghosts. Paranormal sightings reportedly include books randomly falling off shelves, voices being heard, footsteps in areas without customers, and, yes, actual ghost sightings. Brian Stephenson, director of the Valley View Paranormal Society, experienced a couple of particularly unsettling incidents, according to the Tipp News Daily. In one, he was scratched a number of times in the basement, and in another, he claimed to have been partially possessed and to have blacked out momentarily while in the sci-fi room.

6. JOHN K. KING USED & RARE BOOKS // DETROIT

Owner John K. King told the Detroit Free Press that strange occurrences had been happening in his store for decades. He dates it back to when items belonging to a woman who committed suicide were brought into the space. Soon after, employees reported hearing footsteps and doors slamming, but when the woman’s things were moved out, King said everything went back to normal. “Nothing happened ever again that was weird,” he said. “It doesn’t mean she’s not there, but I just haven’t noticed her.” A local psychic claims the bookstore may still be active though, based on a late, former employee who may be keeping tabs on his basement office.

7. TOYS “R” US // SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA

A haunted toy store sounds like a solid horror movie plot, but it’s rumored to be a reality in Sunnyvale, California. According to Stranger Dimensions, the legend goes as such: The store was built on property that was formerly a plantation. The plantation’s owner, Martin Murphy, hired a preacher named Johnny Johnson. “Crazy Johnny,” as the preacher was nicknamed, was in love with Murphy’s daughter, Elizabeth. Unfortunately, Elizabeth was planning on marrying a lawyer, and, as the story has it, Johnny was angrily chopping wood one day and fatally wounded himself by accident. His ghost reportedly wanders the land—now home to the Toys “R” Us—looking for Elizabeth. The usual objects coming off of shelves and footsteps have been reported, but the best anecdote (i.e. the one most becoming of a religious apparition) was of employees once hearing a voice whisper “the Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away” over the intercom system.

8. DIMOND CENTER // ANCHORAGE, ALASKA

The Dimond Center shopping mall in Anchorage, Alaska was reportedly built above an ancient burial ground of Native Alaskans. People have claimed to hear drum and flute music and to have seen various ghosts in native dress wandering the hallways. But most spooky are the claims that transparent wolves are also prowling the mall!

Officials Beg the Public to Stop Peeing on the World’s Tallest Church Tower

Since its completion in 1890, the pinnacle of Ulm Minster in Germany has reached higher than any other Christian church in the world. At 530 feet, it was even the tallest structure on Earth for a brief stint in the late 19th century. Today, the historic landmark is facing a unique threat: urine and vomit from inconsiderate passersby.

As Travel + Leisure reports, the pee problem has gotten so bad that the stone base of the tower is beginning to erode. Now the church officials responsible for conserving it are imploring the public to stop.

Martin Kraft via Wikimedia Commons // CC BY-SA 3.0

Earlier in 2016, the city of Ulm doubled the fine for public urination to 100 euros, but so far that’s done little to deter vandals and their bodily fluids. A city spokeswoman told Süedwest Presse that despite the evidence coating the walls, practically no one’s been caught in the act. She said that “as long as there are people,” the problem isn’t likely to disappear anytime soon.

The sandstone base was recently restored, but if the public doesn’t start behaving, the department that maintains the building could be faced with another restoration—and the financial burden that entails. Since curbing the city’s partiers isn’t likely to happen anytime soon, one department official has put forth a more realistic solution: on-site port-a-potties.

7 Rules for Safe Trick-or-Treating

filed under: halloween
iStock

With October 31 fast approaching, you’re probably busy planning costumes, carving jack-o’-lanterns, and stocking up on candy. But it’s also a good idea, among all those preparations, to put some precautions in place to ensure your Halloween will be as safe as it is spooky. Below are seven rules for safe trick-or-treating.

1. MAKE SURE YOUR KID’S COSTUME FITS WELL—AND WON’T CAUSE INJURIES.

Your child will be spending the entire evening in his costume, so make sure it actually fits. Hem dresses and pants that are too long so that your child won’t trip. Outfit your trick-or-treaters in comfortable walking shoes, and make sure laces are double-knotted. And if a costume requires a weapon (sword, lightsaber, etc.), make sure it’s flexible and made from plastic.

Masks are often made with ill-fitting eye slits and next-to-nonexistent holes through which to breathe, so opt instead for non-toxic face paint and makeup. The CDC recommends testing the paint or makeup on a small area of your child’s face ahead of time in order to check for allergic reactions, and then washing everything off before bedtime that night. Be sure to check that the costume is flame resistant as well.

2. MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD WILL BE PROPERLY SUPERVISED.

Per Kids Health, children under 12 should not trick-or-treat without an adult. If your kid is old enough to knock on doors alone, make sure she does so with a group of friends. And whether you’re going out with your child or not, plan their route in advance. It will help ensure no one ends up in unfamiliar areas, and that family members always know where everyone is.

3. MAKE SURE YOUR KID CAN SEE—AND BE SEEN—IN THE DARK.

Equip your child with glow sticks or flashlights stocked with fresh batteries so that he can find his way on unlit sidewalks. The Red Cross also suggests adorning his costume and trick-or-treat bag with reflective tape, so that he can be easily spotted on dark streets.

4. USE STREET SMARTS.

When out trick-or-treating, be sure to cross the street at crosswalks and with the light. When it’s not possible to travel on sidewalks, the CDC recommends walking on the edge of the road facing oncoming traffic to be safest.

Teach your child to be aware of cars backing up and pulling out of parking spots, and to never dart out from between parked cars. Safe Kids Worldwide also advises instructing your child to make eye contact with drivers, to ensure they’ve actually seen her before she crosses in front of their car.

5. BE CAREFUL WHERE—AND WHO—YOU TRICK-OR-TREAT.

The safest trick-or-treating happens in familiar, well-lit areas, says the National Safety Council. Plan to trick-or-treat in your own neighborhood, where there’s a good chance you’ll know the people whose doors you’ll be knocking on. If your child is venturing farther from home, caution her against visiting homes without their lights on. Only take treats at the doorway; make sure your child understands he should never enter someone’s home.

6. CHECK YOUR CHILD’S CANDY TO MAKE SURE IT IS SAFE TO EAT.

Although tampering with candy is rare these days, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, you should still check your child’s loot for items that are unwrapped or aren’t packaged in their original wrapping. If you have a young child at home, throw out any very small or hard candies that could cause choking. Similar caution should be used if your child has food allergies.

7. PROVIDE YOUR CHILD WITH IDENTIFICATION.

Despite all your best planning, it is still possible you will get separated from your child. To ensure his safety, the MayoClinic suggests pinning a piece of paper with your child’s name, address, and your phone number to an inside coat pocket, to aid in a quick and easy reunion.

George Chernilevsky (Public Domain)

In this mini-documentary, YouTube’s 8-Bit Guy digs into the history and technical details of floppy disks and the drives that read them. If you’ve ever wondered whether 3.5-inch diskettes were really “floppy” inside, why notching holes in the edges of the diskette shells magically “unlocked” extra storage capacity, or why they made ker-chunk! sounds, this is 15 minutes of nerd heaven. 4 Times the Weather Was Frightening on Halloween

The weather enjoys causing mischief on Halloween. Even though this day isn’t typically a traveling holiday in the United States, the weather can still determine whether it’s a fun night of costumes and sweets or a rainy mess that can ruin weeks of excitement and preparation. Thankfully, Halloween 2016 looks spectacular across most of the United States. As of Friday October 28, the forecast for October 31 anticipates a familiar scenario these days—a ridge of high pressure will blanket most of the country with calm and warmer-than-normal temperatures, with wet weather creeping through the Upper Midwest and northern Rocky Mountains. The Northeast will be chilly for trick-or-treaters, but it pales in comparison to the spooky weather that can plague people celebrating this fun day. Here’s a look at some not-too-thrilling storms that made for scary times in years past.

1. THE PERFECT STORM, 1991

Few storms have reached the legendary status of the Perfect Storm, a ghoulish nor’easter/hurricane hybrid that meandered off the East Coast of the United States for a few days around Halloween in 1991. The storm began as a nor’easter—a strong type of low-pressure system named for the powerful northeasterly winds they bring to the coast—off the Canadian Maritimes, collecting its strength both from strong upper-level winds and by absorbing the remnants of Hurricane Grace. The nor’easter briefly developed into an unnamed hurricane, adding to both its intensity and unusual nature.

Forecasters at the time said that the storm formed in “perfect” conditions (hence its nickname) to cause headaches up and down the coast. The storm’s strong winds generated enormous waves and caused destructive coastal flooding as far south as North Carolina. The storm produced a 5-foot storm surge in Boston, Massachusetts, and waves there reached the height of a three-story building. Thirteen people died during The Perfect Storm—six of them perished when a ship named the Andrea Gail encountered rough waves. This tragedy at sea would become the basis for the 1997 book The Perfect Storm and the popular 2000 film of the same name.

2. THE HALLOWEEN BLIZZARD OF 1991

The Perfect Storm wasn’t the only hazard on Halloween in 1991. While that torrent churned over the western Atlantic Ocean, another powerful storm was developing a few thousand miles to the west over the center of the United States. A strong low-pressure system quickly got its act together during the day on Halloween as it raced northeast toward the Great Lakes, dragging bitterly cold air south from Canada while pumping tropical moisture north from the Gulf of Mexico.

This combination of high moisture and freezing air led to copious amounts of snow in the Upper Midwest, falling so hard and so fast that many folks couldn’t go out trick-or-treating that night. By the time the skies cleared out a day or two later, residents found their towns buried under historic amounts of snow. The airport that serves Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, measured 28.4 inches of snow by the end of the storm, an all-time record for one snowstorm that still stands today. In the far northeastern corner of the state, Duluth, Minnesota, recorded just over three feet of snow—36.9 inches—making it the highest snowfall total ever recorded in one storm in the entire state of Minnesota.

3. THE HALLOWEEN NOR’EASTER, 2011

October is a rough time to live in the Northeast. Kids growing up on the East Coast are used to having a more volatile Halloween than their counterparts around the rest of the country, as they found out in 2011 when a nor’easter dropped 1 to 2 feet of snow on communities from Virginia to Maine.

It usually doesn’t get cold enough to see much more than flurries in the Mid-Atlantic or lower elevations in the Northeast until after Thanksgiving, but a strong nor’easter barreled its way up the coast just before Halloween and snowed its way into the history books. The cold air that spiraled around the back of the storm tapped into deep tropical moisture to produce a heavy, wet snow across areas that still hadn’t seen all of the leaves fall off the trees. The weight of the leaves and the wet snow easily brought down trees and power lines, knocking out power for several weeks in the hardest-hit areas. The storm reportedly caused more than $3 billion in damages. Many kids in the affected areas couldn’t go trick-or-treating after the storm, forcing many communities to cancel Halloween activities or put them off until crews could clear away the snow and debris.

4. HURRICANE SANDY, 2012

Things got even worse in the Northeast just one year later. One of the worst hurricanes to strike the United States in the past two decades was Hurricane Sandy, an unusual storm that also took advantage of “perfect” conditions in order to turn into a colossal disaster for tens of millions of people.

Hurricane Sandy approached a complicated environment over the Northeast during the last few days of October in 2012. As the category 1 hurricane drew closer to the New Jersey coast, it gradually lost its tropical characteristics as it started to feed its energy from the jet stream above rather than thunderstorms at the center of the storm. Once the hurricane reached shore, it had transitioned into what was essentially the most powerful nor’easter ever recorded. This transition from a large hurricane into an even larger nor’easter raked damaging winds over an area nearly 1000 miles wide at the storm’s largest extent, an immense wind field that pushed a historic and deadly storm surge into the coast.

The evacuations and damage from the storm forced Halloween to the backburner for many coastal communities, but the storm didn’t stop at the coast. During the day on Halloween, the remnants of Hurricane Sandy continued pushing inland, making the evening a cold, dreary, and sometimes snowy mess for the Appalachians and Great Lakes region.

If you want to give your indoor pet a taste of outdoor life, Outside reports that Canadian artist/designer Judson Beaumont has designed a line of whimsical, animal-sized trailers.

Modeled after vintage Airstreams and mobile homes, Beaumont’s tiny units come equipped with basic (or not so basic) necessities like stainless steel water and food cups and LED lights. You can even order them in different colors, styles, and sizes, and request customized license plates.

For now, the trailers are only designed for pets up to 20 pounds, and unlike your full-sized camper, they aren’t waterproof. So unless you’re anticipating clear skies, it’s probably best for your pooch to go “camping” in your living room instead of the backyard.

You can view a selection of Beaumont’s trailers below, or visit his website for more information.
