9 Phrases the Cubs Gave Baseball

The Cubs are headed back to the World Series for the first time since 1945. They may not have won a World Series title in a very long time (as announcer Jack Brickhouse once said, “Any team can have a bad century”), but during that dry spell they have been enriching the language of baseball. Here are nine phrases that trace back to the Cubs.

1. WRECKING CREW

The phrase “wrecking crew” has a life outside of baseball in salvage, music, and football, but in baseball, according to The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, it was first applied as a term for a group of heavy hitters in reference to the 1912 Chicago Cubs.

2. TINKER TO EVERS TO CHANCE

In 1910, New York Evening Mail columnist Franklin P. Adams wrote a poem called “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon” about the double-play damage the Cubs trio of shortstop Joe Tinker, second baseman Johnny Evers, and first baseman Frank Chance had inflicted on the Giants:

These are the saddest of possible words:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,
Making a Giant hit into a double—
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
“Tinker to Evers to Chance.”

The phrase “Tinker to Evers to Chance” became a popular way to remark on any well-executed, coordinated achievement. For example, according to a 2010 Chicago Tribune article, “a 2003 motion picture ad for Golden Globe-winner The Hours, starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore, proclaims that ‘Kidman to Meryl to Moore’ is ‘the acting version of baseball’s fabled ‘Tinker to Evers to Chance.’”

3. LET’S PLAY TWO

The beloved “Mr. Cub” Ernie Banks, known for his cheerful disposition, used to express his love of the game by saying “It’s a beautiful day for a ballgame. Let’s play two.” As Scott Simon said after Banks died at the beginning of this year, “It was a phrase he used to remind himself and other players that whatever their complaints, they got to play a game for a living, and hear the cheers of strangers. It was a reminder to all of us to cherish life and the chance to have work that gives enjoyment to others.”

4. BLEACHER BUM

The Dickson Baseball Dictionary defines a bleacher bum as “One of a horde of boisterous, often shirtless fans who inhabit the bleachers.” In 1966, a group of 10 devoted fans at Wrigley Field proudly declared themselves “bleacher bums,” and their wild, inebriated antics became part of the attraction of a day at the ballpark.

5. HOLY COW!

Long time Cubs announcer Harry Caray was not the first to exclaim “Holy cow!” but all the same, he made it his own trademark cry. It’s the title of his autobiography, where he explains that he trained himself to say “holy cow” early in his career because “it was the only exclamation I could come up with that didn’t involve profanity.”

6. IT MIGHT BE, IT COULD BE, IT IS

Another Harry Carayism, the rising excitement of “It might be … it could be … IT IS!” is the perfect send off for a home run ball or any other triumph at the end of a tension-filled moment.

7. WOO!

The single word “woo” does not come from Cubs baseball, but what we linguists might call “the extended ‘woo’ list construction,” perfected by superfan Ronnie “Woo Woo” Wickers, has undeniable Cubs pedigree. A typical example of the construction: “Cubs, woo! Love, woo! Cubs, woo! We’re number one, woo! Baseball, woo! Cubs, woo!”

8. THE FRIENDLY CONFINES

This nickname had been applied to other ballparks in the old days, but it only stuck to cozy, neighborhood Wrigley Field.

9. I DON’T CARE WHO WINS, AS LONG AS IT’S THE CUBS

In the 1940s and ’50s, Cubs announcer Bert Wilson would often wax rhapsodic about the beautiful weather or the wonderful atmosphere at the game and conclude with “I don’t care who wins, as long as it’s the Cubs.” Fans of other teams or pursuits have since used the phrase, substituting their own choices for the ending, but none has felt the emotion behind it as deeply or sincerely as a Cubs fan.

How Do Blind People Find Braille Signs?

filed under: design, video

The Americans with Disabilities Act requires most permanent signs in buildings to have tactile (raised) letters, along with Braille printing. I have run across these signs in lots of hotels and convention centers, and often wondered: How would a blind person find the signs in order to read them?

Tommy Edison, “The Blind Film Critic,” made a video illustrating how this works. As a sighted person, I found this fascinating—and my favorite bit is when Edison comes across a typo in the Braille. Oops. I was also surprised at how the signage works around elevators and floor numbers; in retrospect, I had seen those signs but never realized what they were for.

Take a moment to learn how blind folks find and use these signs:

If you liked that, you’ll love Edison’s YouTube channel. You might also be interested in these placement guidelines for ADA-compliant signs around doors!

What’s the Origin of Jack-O’-Lanterns?

The term “jack-o’-lantern” was first applied to people, not pumpkins. As far back as 1663, the term meant a man with a lantern, or a night watchman. Just a decade or so later, it began to be used to refer to the mysterious lights sometimes seen at night over bogs, swamps, and marshes.

What Makes Chewing Gum Chewy?

YouTube // National Geographic

Chemist George Zaidan asks the important question: “What the hell is in gum that makes it so magical?” Specifically, why is gum chewy to start with, and how does it remain chewy for a long time despite your saliva trying to pre-digest it?

In this video, Zaidan explores the ingredients in chewing gum, then proceeds to make his own in a little saucepan. The key to understanding chewing gum is to get inside the meta-ingredient labeled “gum base” on the package. This stuff contains a subset of up to 46 actual ingredients, and therein lies the magic.

The Best Wines to Pair With Your Halloween Candy

One of the best things about adulthood is that you can buy whatever candy you want, whenever you want it. And you can enjoy an adult beverage as you eat it. This Halloween season, when those discount bins of bite-sized candy call to you, you can also grab a bottle of wine that will complement the flavors of those Starbursts or Whoppers.

Vivino, a wine review app, asked a panel of wine experts to recommend wines that will go with your Halloween binge, and these are the pairings they came up with:

Though you may not understand why these wines make complementary flavor combinations when enjoyed with particular candies, don’t worry—the pairings aren’t random. Here are a few of the reasons behind them:

“Dominated by intense orange and candied lemon with touches of minerality, they make the candy taste less sour,” sommelier Laura Burgess says of pairing Rieslings with SweeTARTS, “enabling the eating of way too many packets at once!”

Restaurant beverage director Joel Caruso says “The huge malty character of Whoppers needs a wine with backbone and depth to keep from being overpowered by the malt and chocolate,” which is why he recommends a “ripe, bold Cabernet Sauvignon blend.”

And wine writer Karen MacNeil calls the mix of Moscato and candy corn “a fantasmagorica of sweetness,” because“the sugar in the candy corn amps up the fruitiness in the Moscato. Both taste better as a result.” Well, who wouldn’t want that?

More pairings and explanations from the sommeliers can be found on the Vivino blog.

“Neither Snow nor Rain …” Isn’t the USPS Motto

filed under: History

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” If this motto summons up visions of brave postal workers trudging through inclement weather conditions, you’re not alone—for over a century, it’s been synonymous with the tireless work the postal service does to make sure you get your junk mail, magazines, and birthday cards on time. But if you think it’s the official creed of the United States Postal Service, think again—it was actually written about another set of postal workers from around 500 BCE.

In fact, the USPS doesn’t have an official motto [PDF]. And given that the postal service regularly cancels mail delivery due to weather, the misunderstanding about its motto regularly leads to even more frustration from mail-less customers.

Blame a building for the confusion. In 1912, a building then called the General Post Office Building (since renamed the James A. Farley Post Office Building) was constructed in what would later become ZIP code 10001. Smack in the center of Manhattan, the grand building was built right across from Penn Station and Madison Square Garden. It had prime real estate and a profile to match—white columns, a grandiose reception hall, and even a dry moat around it to light up its gigantic basement.

It also had an architect with a taste for classical flair. William Mitchell Kendall designed other column-studded sites like the Manhattan Municipal Building and the Arlington Memorial Bridge. Kendall, whose dad was a classics scholar, also loved the words of the ancients as much as their columns. So when he designed the post office, he decided to inscribe it with a phrase by Herodotus, the Greek scholar sometimes known as the father of history.

Kendall modified a translation of Herodotus’s work by George Herbert Palmer, a professor at Harvard and a preeminent classicist, for the building. The line was written by Herodotus in paragraph 98, book eight of his book The Persian Wars, which recounts the history of a war that took place between the Greeks and the Persian Empire from 499 to 479 BCE (the exact time period of the war is disputed).

Herodotus was impressed by the efficient, relay-like postal system employed by the Persians, which he compared to the Greek torch race. “There is nothing in the world which travels faster than the Persian couriers,” he wrote admiringly. The postal system may have been impressive, but it ultimately didn’t help Persia—after decades of conflicts, they lost the wars.

The Persians may not have won in Greece, but the Persian couriers who inspired the inscription must have been on to something—to this day, the USPS relies on a relay-like system to both get mail across the country and help postal carriers on their daily rounds. They may not operate in all weather conditions, but today’s USPS still manages to deliver hundreds of billions of pieces of mail each year. Not bad for an organization with no official motto.
