Should You Order Wine by the Glass?

You may only want one glass of wine, but are you getting ripped off when you order it at a bar or restaurant? After all, buying in bulk seems like a smarter idea. We certainly save money when we buy our oatmeal and cashews out of bins.

But is that how it works with restaurant wine?

Well, let’s start by looking at how restaurants price wine.

If you are worried about the mark-up on wine, then rest assured: the mark-up is huge, whether wine is priced by the glass or the bottle. A bottle of wine is probably priced at four to five times higher than its wholesale cost. The restaurant, after all, needs to make a profit.

Guess what? The food is marked up too.

Now, that’s settled. So, let’s look at the by-the-glass pricing specifically.

A restaurant can get four glasses of wine per bottle, but they might try to squeeze five. If they decide to split a mid-priced bottle, say $40, into five glasses, they are looking at charging customers $8 for each glass.

That sounds a little cheap, though. Customers may get turned off by what they think is a low quality glass of wine. They may even think the food must be low quality. So, if the restaurant charges $10 for each glass just to make it more attractive and in line with the rest of the menu, then that $40 bottle now brings in $50.

And that same bottle probably cost them about $10 wholesale. Definitely a big mark-up.

Restaurants may also employ the opposite technique, though, on a pricy bottle. Maybe they got a great deal from an obscure winery or region, or they want to serve something fancy for holiday time. So they take a wine normally priced high and serve it by the glass at less than optimal price to encourage orders. It’s market research for them. Something to think about…

Also, don’t worry about the freshness if you’re at a decent place that seems to turn their bottles frequently. A good server won’t bring you a glass of stale wine, and if it does happen, then politely send it back. This is pretty much the only good reason to send back wine, by the way.

At any rate, the whole reason for paying a bunch of money to eat at a restaurant is to enjoy the entire experience. Otherwise, you’d cook at home and drink out of a box. Order what you like, whether it’s a glass or a bottle, and don’t worry about the rest.

As long as it’s not too expensive, anyway.

This Is Why You Should Chill Red Wine, According to an Expert

We’ve always heard that red wine should be served at room temperature. That said…the temperature isn’t the same in every room. Even in the same room, the temperature will vary depending on the time of year, or even the time of day.

The way to balance this out and get the most consistent flavor from your favorite red, it turns out, is to let it spend a little time chilling in the fridge.

Expert Ian Ferrier weighed in on how long and and how cold for Lifehacker.com, and here is some of his advice.

First up, if you’re not sure how cold to go, err on the side of colder, not warmer.

“Each wine has its own specific ideal temperature range but generally you want to lean on the cooler end of things than the warmer,” explained Ferrier, “because it’s always nice to drink a wine that’s warming up.” In terms of degrees, “you always want your reds at least in the 60- to 70-degree range. The main reason you don’t want a wine warmer than that is that the aromatics start to shift and the sensation of alcohol starts to take over when you stick your nose in the glass. You especially don’t want a warmer big red wine that tends to have a higher alcohol content. In general, think of it like drinking a warm Pabst versus an ice cold one. You taste different things and the mouthfeel is different.”

The lighter red you’ve chosen, the colder you can go.

“Generally,” explained Ferrier, “you can cool lighter reds even more, down to traditional white service temps [49-55℉]. You don’t want a big red to get this cold because, among other things, chilling the wine can increase the sensation of tannic structure and can make a wine bitter and sharp. With a lighter red it can brighten the acidity, enhance the structure and show off more floral aromatics. Every wine is different and has its own sweet spot.”

Bubbles love the ice cold.

“As far as sparkling reds go, the wine itself generally follows the same principle as far as aromatics, structure, etc., but the big difference is the carbon dioxide in solution,” Ferrier told me. “If your wine is cold, the carbon dioxide stays in solution well and you get excellent fine bubbles, if it’s room temp your bottle probably will explode a little when you open it. Aside from that, it’s like a warm soda versus a cold soda— the carbonation is rough and unpleasant. The wine might be nice as it warms up, but at the point of opening a traditional ‘champagne style’ cork, you want an ice-cold wine.”

Go ahead and try it, see what you think! Either way, you get to drink some wine, so it’s a win-win!

A Texas Movie Theater Lets You Bring Your Dog and the Ticket Includes Bottomless Wine

This is what I’m talking about! And I have a feeling I’m not alone.

In fact, I’m willing to bet that armies of millions are lined up behind me in their overwhelming excitement about this news: there’ is now a movie theater where $15 buys you a ticket to the show and you can bring your dog with you. Oh, and you get unlimited wine or four whiskeys with that ticket.

Boom!

K9 Cinemas in Plano, Texas, is the name of the joint, and it opened in late 2018. There are only three rules people need to follow at the cinema: no more than two dogs per person (it costs $5 to bring an extra pup), you need to bring valid papers from your dog’s vet the first time you visit, and you need to clean up after your best friend. Also, you can buy snacks for yourself (obviously) and treats for your furry friend, too.

Eric Lankford, who founded K9 Cinemas, said, “I can’t believe we are breaking ground with a new niche nobody has done before — dogs and movies! We are excited to spread the smiles across your whole families faces, furry included, at a K9C near you coming soon!”

Lankford said about the business and beloved dog, Bear:

“Little did Bear and I know we would soon be published in every major publication you can name both nationally and worldwide. Turns out when you start a passion project with a decade of experience building businesses and turn that experience on to something you sincerely love, something special happens. I simply want to make other people as happy as Bear makes me. When our customers come through our doors it’s nothing but smiles and laughter.”

The theater doesn’t show first-run films yet, but instead screens one-off movies and hosts theme nights. And, of course, you better believe the theater has hosted Game of Thrones viewing parties.

Genius idea! I smell a franchise brewing…

Portable Wine Pouches Are Exactly What You’re Gonna Need This Summer

It’s gonna be a loooooooooong, hot summer. You know you’ll be hitting the beach or at least the pool on several occasions the next few months, and, let’s face it, you’re gonna be indulging in some booze at least part of the time.

Well, do I have a treat for you, ladies and gentlemen. A company called High Key Wine is about the change the wine drinking game in a major way. Instead of lugging clunky bottles of wine, glasses, and a corkscrew with you, now you can sip on High Key’s wine pouches without a worry in the world. Boom. Game changer.

This is how the company describes their product on their website:

“Why hasn’t anyone made this yet? This is the question we get asked the most! High Key is the new thing you’ve been looking for. It’s fun, versatile and can go wherever you can. Enjoy a hint of nostalgia as you take a sip on your next adventure.”

High Key offers three flavors as of now: Dry Rosé, Semi-Sweet Rosé, and Sweet White. The pouches are serving-size and they even come with a straw. It’s like a Capri Sun-wine pouch for those blazing hot summer days.

You can buy High Key Wine at some convenience stores but your best bet is through their website. Six packs cost $19.98. Have a great summer! (Admit it…it just got a little more interesting…).

What do you think? Are you gonna stock up on these for those hot days ahead?

These Floating Wine Glasses Will Make Your Summer at the Pool a Whole Lot Better

Is there anything better than drinking wine at the pool on your day off?

Now you can do so without having to swim over to the edge to take a sip.

Introducing: floating wine glasses, the solution to all your “drunk at the pool” problems. You can buy them from a few retailers, including Amazon and Aldi.

The Aldi glasses are incredibly cheap. They’re just $2.49 per glass, which is good, because something that is designed to hold your pool wine will probably not remain pristine forever.

They come in three colors, turquoise, white, and clear. They are only available for a limited time, though, so you need to buy them ASAP!

Not near an Aldi? Try Amazon. There’s a set of two for $20.99, and they float in the pool but look just like regular wine glasses. They’re multipurpose!

Looking at the product photo, it seems like pool water will absolutely get into your wine glass if anybody rocks the boat too much, but whatevs.

Here’s another cool set of four that’s much more colorful. These are $44.99 for the full set, or you can buy them individually for $12.95 each.

As a bonus, the wine glasses with the stake can be anchored into the sand if you’re kickin’ it on the beach instead of at the pool.

If you are not the pool type, you can also use these floating wine glasses in the bath, or in a hot tub or jacuzzi.

Btw, you’re welcome! 😉

A Server Made a $5,570 Mistake with a Bottle of Wine and Their Manager Told Twitter

How many of us have made a £4,500 mistake in our lives? Not too many, I’m willing to bet.

Somebody at Hawksmoor Manchester did recently and what the restaurant publicly tweeted about the situation might just shock you.

Wow. I mean, that was REALLY nice of them.

So the bottles must have looked a lot alike, yeah?

Oh… hmm….

But this did inspire people to share their own stories about people royally fucking up on the job…

And it gets worse…

But most people (and potential customers) were legitimately impressed by the restaurant’s progressive take on the situation…

Others roasted the restaurant for caring such expensive wine. Because what about the homeless people, huh?

Well, they had the perfect comeback for that too..

Game. Set. Match.
