These Cuddly Pups Remind Us Why Dogs Are Man’s Best Friend

When I was young, I was terrified of dogs.

No one really knows why. Maybe because the whole neighborhood had Labradors who would chase me and knock me down.

They thought we were playing. I thought I was dinner.

Eventually, because my sister wanted one, I agreed that we could get a dog if it was a little one, and we soon welcomed a terrier pup into the family.

Now, as an adult, I love doggos. (I still don’t love Labs though. Sorry most popular breed on the planet.)

There’s just nothing quite like a dog to bring a smile to your face.

Childhood Memories That Will Bring Back 1990s Nostalgia

There’s nothing like a little walk down memory lane to make you feel all the feels from your childhood.

The 80s and 90s may have been a time of bad hair and bright clothes, and all the plastic you could possibly consume, but man, there was some great stuff too.

A Scientist Thinks the Earth Is Actually Two Planets Fused Together After Colliding

Just when you thought you knew how the world works, science throws something new at you.

There’s a ton of great research coming out of PhD programs these days–new discoveries and new ideas.

One such researcher is Qian Yuan from the School of Earth and Space Exploration at Arizona State University.

His research suggests that parts of the Earth are not actually Earth at all.

His team’s research was presented at the 52nd Lunar and Planetary Science Conference this past March.

For years it has been widely believed that a proto-planet called Theia helped to form life as we know it.

According to Popular Mechanics:

In 2016, UCLA researchers proposed that Earth could actually be two planets that fused together after colliding: itself and Theia. At the time, scientists said they believe the two planetary masses mixed together uniformly. Now, Qian Yuan of Arizona State University and his colleagues suggest the mysterious dense spots in Earth’s interior are the specific pieces of Theia that are still intact.

Theia is thought to be very similar in size and structure to Mars.

Scientists also believe that the Earth’s Moon may have formed during this impact.

You might remember from science class that the Earth is made up of 3 layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core.

The mantle itself is also made up of layers of varying density, and is at the center of Yuan’s research.

In some cases, there are massive pockets that are more dense, called “Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces” or (LLSVPs).

I honestly don’t understand most of Yuan’s science-related tweets, but he compares the Earth to chocolate, which is always a language I can understand:

The team did a lot of math, and they have been able to compare the objects of their study with the mantle on Mars, which can be examined in the form of meteorites that have landed on Earth–over 100 of them.

What the researchers found is that:

“The total mass of the moon, together with the LLSVPs, is almost perfectly matched with [Mars’s] mantle.”

Unlike the original supposition that the two planets fused completely, Yuan’s team believe that the heavier Theia material sank into the deepest part of the Earth’s mantle, closest to the core, and there it stayed, like the gritty dregs at the bottom of a cup of coffee.

Popular Mechanics explains it this way:

How have the dense Theia materials stayed intact for billions of years?

It’s a function of the way Earth’s mantle works, where convection circulates materials that are a certain temperature and density.

The Theia materials are so dense that they sank and never floated back into the convection zone.

Think of this like the stuff that accumulates in a sharp corner that’s hard to reach with the vacuum cleaner.

So now you know. The Earth is like an Easter candy egg with a vacuum cleaner hidden deep inside.

And even though Mars feels very far away, we are all technically walking on a foreign world.

Sam’s Club Unveils Annual Party Floats and People Are Excited

I remember going to Sam’s Club when I was young and being mesmerized by all the giant containers of pickles and mayo and cereal.

My parents got a massive deal on a case of ice pops that were, unfortunately, made with real fruit juice and not Otterpops.

But the point is, Sam’s knows “big” best.

They specialize in enormous.

So is it any wonder that every year they release their new line of “Member’s Mark” party floats?

Made to fit a half dozen adults, presumably hanging out at the lake or the ocean rather than a backyard pool, last year’s offerings included a massive airplane.

They also made a float shaped like a boat, which kind of begs the philosophical question, at what point does a boat become a boat?

Another year, you and your friends could enjoy a ride on a giant swan king.

They call them “Party Islands” and these floats really are practically boats all on their own.

This year, Sam’s is revving up for summer with two automotive-inspired offerings: a sporty blue convertible and a pink limousine fit for an Elvis impersonator.

Retailing for $199.98, the cars are 21 feet long by 10 feet wide, and both are intended to comfortably seat 6 BFFs, with built in cup holders and a cooler for ice.

If the cars are a little too gimmicky for your taste, you can opt for more reclining in the less exciting Paradise Island model.

And if none of this year’s options float your boat, you might be able to snag a deal on last year’s Unicorn Party Island–or the Zebra version that evokes Fruit Stripes Gum vibes.

I personally would have lost my mind for this kind of stuff when I was a kid.

But we did have one of those big alligator floats for our pool (sans actual gator).

My family had two cats when I was growing up, and while I don’t love cleaning the litter box, I love the way they purr. Life isn’t really suitable for a cat at the moment, but lately, I find myself wishing I had one. They’re so soft, standoffish, and adorable.

Our neighbor’s cat comes to visit us sometimes. He used to do his business in a planter in our garden. When we had to get rid of the planter (aka his toilet), he waited on the front porch for us to come home from work, just so he could give us the evil eye. I want to adopt him.

Company Turns Kids’ Doodles Into Real Plushies

When I was young, I doodled this character a lot called “Joe Zargatar.” He was basically a living guitar with arms and legs.

I even recorded an album of his music that we burned to CD using our early 2000’s state of the art PC. I loved that little guy.

If I could have turned him into a tangible toy? I would have been over the moon.

The Pacific Ocean Is Getting Colder as Parts of the Earth Heat Up

We used to talk all the time about Global Warming. Then over the last few decades, the concept got rebranded as Climate Change, and with good reason.

Warming in and of itself is not necessarily concerning. It’s the dramatic fluctuations in normal weather patterns, which we experience with greater and greater frequency and severity, in addition to the overall temperature increase, that is really sounding the alarm. In fact it turns out that as some parts of the Earth are getting warmer, other parts are losing heat.

To understand this new discovery, published in Geophysical Research Letters by researchers from the University of Oslo, it may be helpful to reflect back on 3rd grade science class.

Remember how the Earth is made up of layers, with a molten magma core surrounded by the mantle?

The mantle and the core are the notable layers in this new research because it’s not just the sun that heats the surface of our planet.

It turns out, the core heats us from the inside, as well, like how a hot bowl of soup can warm you all over on a cold day.

As Popular Mechanics explains:

Over the extremely long term, this interior will continue to cool until Earth is more like Mars. The surprise in the new study is how unevenly the heat is dissipating, but the reason makes intuitive sense: Parts of Earth have been insulated by more landmass, creating something of a Thermos layer that traps heat.

To understand how it is possible for one side of the Earth to be cooling faster than the other, it helps to picture an AuthaGraph map of the world.

This more accurate representation demonstrates the unequal distribution of land and water across the Earth.

For their study, the Oslo scientists divided the Earth into an African hemisphere (mostly land) and a Pacific hemisphere (mostly water).

Then they used computers to model and analyze 400 million years of continental drift and temperature data, to understand the relative insulation of each hemisphere across time.

Just like bubbles seem to keep you and your bath water warmer for longer, land insulates better than water alone.

The seafloor is far thinner than the bulky landmass, and temperature from within Earth is “quenched” by the enormous volume of cold water that’s above it.

When you think about it that way, it all kind of makes sense.

And yet, they found a bit of a contradiction.

The research shows that the Pacific hemisphere has cooled around 50 Kelvin more than the African hemisphere.
(If my math is right, that’s something like a drop of 550 degrees Fahrenheit, but please don’t quote me.)

Due to continental drift, or the Lost City of Atlantis, or who-knows-what, it looks like the Pacific side of the world was not always the cooler of the two.

Think about the Ring of Fire, the higher volcanic activity in and around the Pacific Ocean.

Popular Mechanics points out:

The Pacific’s high tectonic activity today points to a heat disparity.

The meltier the mantle, the more the plates can slide and slam together.

Maybe that’s where everything is connected and Climate Change really comes into play.

As sea levels rise, adding more water to the mix, and the ice shelf breaks off, adding more cold ice into the water, maybe that is helping the ocean cool down even faster.

That’s the fun thing about science–there’s always more to figure out.

A Family Found a Life-Sized Monopoly Board Under Their Carpet and People Want One

We played a lot of board games growing up.

We had the classics like Checkers, Clue, Trivial Pursuit, and Monopoly. We also played oddly specific games like a Clue-style Sherlock Holmes who-dunit, The New York game which involved navigating the subway to visit famous Manhattan sites, and an It’s a Wonderful Life themed trivia game.

Consequently, I love board games, and have always had an affinity for Monopoly. But not, apparently, as much as some people.

Recently, a user by the name of Yamaha234 posted to the r/pics Subreddit about a unique discovery their in-laws made. During a home remodel, the couple pulled up some old carpet only to find a life-sized Monopoly board underneath.

As My Modern Met explains:

The room-sized Monopoly board is based on the classic U.S. version of the game, complete with Chance and Community Chest spaces, a jail, and railroads.

Iconic sought-after spaces such as Park Place and Boardwalk also feature. The giant floor edition appears to have been hand-painted by the previous homeowners years ago.

Personally, I think the jail square is the perfect location for time out if you have naughty kids.

Reddit users were floored. And while they didn’t all agree on the merits of Monopoly game-play, they had a lot of fun with the idea.

Enough, it turns out, that this wasn’t even the first time someone posted such a find on Reddit!

Check It Out! Martial Arts Classes Aren’t Just for Kids Anymore!

It can be difficult to find hobbies as an adult. In between work and taking care of our families and trying to exercise, who has time for one more thing?

That’s why so many people turn exercise into a hobby.

But we’ve all felt threatened from time to time, especially if you’re a woman who has ever walked to your car alone after dark.

Learning self defense moves, no matter your age, can go a long way to assuaging those little fears.

But knowing what to do is not always obvious, especially in a moment of panic.

The discipline and training of martial arts can help you keep a cool head, and fall back on your training in a crisis.

Enjoy These Hilariously Passive Aggressive Exchanges That Went Viral

We all have times when we can be passive aggressive. I’m not proud of it.

I think it’s sort of a natural extension of being told all our lives that we need to be nice, or to hide our feelings, to avoid conflict at all costs. There has to be an outlet somewhere, and so the snark makes it way out as passive aggression.

Sometimes it’s an attempt to be funny, to make a point while smoothing over conflict. Other times, laughter may not be the intention, but it’s good when the rest of us can see the humor in it anyway.

Here’s a roundup of some of the best passive aggressive moments out there.

1. The bumper sticker: a reliable classic

I used to think that it would be a good idea if we could easily put scrolling messages on the front or back of our cars. You know, to tell people their gas tank is open or thank them for letting you into traffic. In retrospect, it’s probably better that we don’t.

2. People really can say a lot with their cars

It’s definitely a favored form of passive aggression. Or even just outright aggression.

3. The bathroom sign

Not to be confused with the writing inside the stall. Those messages may or may not be passive aggressive.

5. The office break room

I think people are at their most passive aggressive at work.

You can’t outright go at someone because you still have to work together.

6. But sometimes things just have to be said

They definitely know their clientele.

And they might decide to get even in the end.

10. Homeowners can be especially tetchy

I don’t actually MIND that people turn around in my driveway so much…

But it does feel like we’re the chosen ones and I don’t understand WHY.

11. It’s hard to know how to talk to your neighbors

You just never know how they’ll react.

12. Don’t forget about spouses

I bet almost no one is as passive aggressive as a spouse. You think you’re doing a good thing by avoiding a fight…

13. Or anyway, you’re making your point

That’s definitely one way of doing it. If the other person actually CARES that the bed isn’t made.

14. Living with other people is just hard

It helps to get creative and add a touch of humor. But did they DO the dishes?

15. Hopefully you can laugh about it

Because the humor takes the sting out of the conversations we’re not having. This one is next-level though.

16. Just remember, the kids are watching and learning

They hear what you say and they see what you do, and then they repeat it and it’s hilarious.

My dad found my passive aggressive note that I wrote the toothfairy. It was better than I remembered.

These are all so amazingly passive aggressive that I almost feel sad not to work in an office with people anymore.
