People Share Their Really Creepy Road Trip Stories

If you drive long distances, chances are you’ve pulled off the highway to snag some food, find a bathroom, or needed a place to crash. In some cases, this can be harmless. You do your business and on your way, you go.

Other times, you may have gotten the heebie-jeebies driving down a dark, winding road, convinced there was a sign that said “Gas Station” but it’s nowhere to be found.

r/AskReddit user u/salemwinona posted “Have you ever been to a town, village, truck stop, gas station, diner, etc. during a road trip that just didn’t “feel right”, like time seemed to pass differently there, or the people there gave you the creeps? What was your experience there?”

The response will both creep you out and relieve you that you’re not the only one.

10. Beware of empty store shelves

u/the_short_viking ~ “Coatesville, Pennsylvania.

I was with a friend who had come up from Mexico and we were staying a few nights at his grandmother’s ranch nearby. Coatesville was the only town around where we could find Mexican ingredients. This is an old steel town that feels post-apocalyptic, everyone there didn’t really seem to be doing anything or going anywhere, it was so creepy. The store we ended up going to had nearly empty shelves and I think the guys were a bit surprised to see us there.

All in all just very strange and eerie.”

9. A near-death experience

u/Many_Pancakes~ “This is my girlfriends story but is kinda up the alley of what you are asking for. My partner went to Florida with her family when she was younger and they were driving around trying to find some food until they found a Chinese restaurant and they went in and had some food”

“There were no other customers, lots of staff, everyone seemed very tense but the food was great.

They left and had a lovely rest of their day.”

“During breakfast the next morning they turned on their tele and the news showed the place they had eaten and they were like ‘wow look we went there’. Then the story started and it turns out no more than 10 minutes after they left there was a massive shoot up and they all killed one another.

Turns out that the ignorant British tourists just sat in-between some kind of Asian turf war.”

8. Research your AirBnB!

u/Sil_7~ “My boyfriend and I had a stay in Melbourne for a few nights. First Airbnb was practically a small hotel room so, all good. The second on the other hand… It was advertised as “Flexible check-in ” but the owner wouldn’t stop pestering us for a time we were going to be there. We told them 8pm and they still kept asking before saying they had to go out and ‘Frank’ would let us in.

“We had no mention of this guy before then but fine, whatever. We ended up missing a few small shows we were eager to go to so we’d get there earlier and despite being promised off the street parking we could only park on the street. It sucked but no big deal. We’d had a long day and were pretty tired.”

“Then we get to the house. Frank is this tall, thin, muscley older guy, really intense and absolutely no chill. Bulging eyes kind of intense. We were both really uncomfortable from the start but my bf makes small talk, jokes about Sydney vs Melbourne. This guy doesn’t like it. To the point where he stopped walking, swung around and got in my bfs face. Bf de-escalated the situation real quick and we got to our room and immediately locked the door.”

“We both got some bad vibes off the place and the guy but we couldn’t work out why. We thought we were just tired but kept debating the pros and cons of staying, and the room wasn’t helping! It was freshly painted and the fumes were so strong I was getting a migraine, there was a door to the backyard that was blocked off with a dresser, so much dust under the bed it was ridiculous.”

“And then we noticed two things. One was the wooden plank holding up the curtains. It was big, thick, heavy looking thing – and it was holding onto the wall by a nail on each side. Half of it had already leant right off the wall, leaving a huge gap. This was right above the head of the bed. That was it for my bf, he wanted out.”

“This second point was my big thing. The door to the rest of the house had a lock but there was also a gap between it and the floor. I’m not talking a small space for air. I’m not talking fit a finger underneath. I’m talking big enough for tall, muscley, big guy Frank to fit his entire arm under.”

7. Strangely quiet Christmas town

u/urneighbourhoodwitch ~ “I was on a road trip on the south island of New Zealand and one night at around 9pm decided to stop in a small town to get some rest. Already while driving into the town I noticed that there were Christmas decorations everywhere, like decorated trees and plastic santa’s, reindeer etc. Excessive amounts of decorations on the streets and in every window. This wouldn’t have been too weird if it hadn’t been in the middle of August. But I thought the town was just really dedicated to a specific aesthetic or whatever.”

“I got to the motel and checked in and the old lady at the front desk was short and rude with me which I thought was weird bc I had experienced people in NZ as really nice and quite chatty (compared to where I come from lol). She also wouldn’t give me the wifi password even though they advertised free wifi. She quite literally told me to piss off and let her get back to her newspaper.”

“After that I went out and the whole time I was there I never saw any people on the street. I went to a diner near the motel (both also stuffed with Christmas decorations) and had the same experience with the waitress while ordering. She told me they are out of almost everything and the only I was able to get was a cheese sandwich.”

“There were other people in the restaurant who were all eating what I suppose were meals from the menu. They didn’t have to order a plain cheese sandwich. While waiting for my food I noticed that no one in the whole diner was talking even though there were families and other groups of people. Even the kids ate in silence. Or not really silence, as there was Christmas music blaring.”

“After I was done eating I just paid and left. I was also the only one leaving. No one in that diner, the whole time I was there, got up to leave or go to the bathroom or do anything really. They all just sat there. When I left I felt like they were all starting holes in my back. The whole time I was in that town I got a feeling that everyone wanted me to leave and like they were somehow angry with me.”

6. If you’re thinking about sleeping in a “shack” then it’s probably not safe

u/trucknjoe ~ “When hitch hiking in the south island I got stuck in a town in the middle of nowhere because no one would pick me up. It got dark and I didn’t have enough money for a motel so I was planning to chill at this little shack where people would pull over to rest while driving. Over the course of several hours, I got offered meth by a couple, some local random dude tried to convince me to go to his house to smoke weed and another couple smoked a cigarette with me while they told me about how they heard voices.”

“After they left I ended up jumping over a fence and slept in a bush somewhere until my sister could pick me up the next day because she was driving through the town.

5. Stay away from Gary, Indiana

u/Kutbakfiets ~ “Gary Indiana. I got off the highway to get gas.

Driving through the city was like a post apocalyptic movie complete with burned out cars, crazy guy in underwear walking down the middle of the street with a baseball bat and all the windows were broken or boarded up.”

“I stopped at a gas station and then guy came out and said ‘Get back on the highway son. It’s not safe here.’ I had enough gas to get to a safer rest stop to refuel.”

4. Tiger, Georgia and the invisible town

u/mxmnull ~ My girlfriend and I went to an AirBnB in a town called Tiger, Georgia to see a bunch of her old college friends. There was one other couple who got there about the same time we did. By day the cabin looks pleasant enough- 3 stories of rustic comfort with a hot tub overlooking the forest and sunrise. We didn’t get there by day. We got there as the sun was sinking low. Rooms seemed to shrink and tighten. The stairwells were only as wide as a single body. And at the bottom of the basement stairs, a rug hid a padlocked trapdoor. It felt like the start of a horror movie.”

“We’re trying to ignore the weird vibes and decide to go to dinner. We spent nearly an hour driving around searching for a place to eat. Steakhouses closed by 7pm, an Italian joint which was now someone’s house. A Mexican eatery now abandoned and overgrown with vines… Finally we find something.”

“It’s suitably called “The Last Dive Bar On Earth”, and it’s sitting on the edge of a retention pond. The parking lot is full of pick up trucks all festooned with old political bumper stickers from the late 90s and early 2000s. We head in. It’s like we’ve entered another decade. But the beer is good, they have pizza, and the prices aren’t bad. We eat in a hurry and get out of there.”

3. No shoes equal service in Arkansas

u/ spiderlanewales ~ “Rural northern Arkansas was pretty bizarre when we passed through there around 2012. We stopped at this gas station, and an old, beat-up pickup flew into a parking spot. There were two hillbillies in the cab, and maybe six more in the bed, all wearing the same thing: blue jean overalls and nothing else. No socks or shoes.”

“They were being super loud, and they just went into the gas station like that was normal. Where i’m from, if an attendant even sees you approaching the place without shoes, they will stop you and tell you to come back when you have some. Oh, you’d also get mega-pulled-over for driving around with people hollering in your truck bed.”

2. The Twilight Zone

u/ I_love_asparagus ~ “Yep, stopped in a no name town in Texas for gas. Bunch of guys wearing nothing but denim hanging out in front of the gas station. Denim, cow boy hats, cow boy boots. It wasn’t just a lot of people, EVERYONE was wearing that. Their drawls were so thick I could barely understand what they were saying to one another, a lot of hooting and hollering.”

“About 50 yards away, there was a guy sitting under a tree. He was wearing a black and white striped jump suit…and was chained to the tree by a shackle on his leg. Didn’t see any law enforcement around, maybe they dropped him off? A girl with huge tits, one and a half arms, and an eye-patch complimented my car and smiled at me when I was pumping gas.”

“I saw a cow trotting down the side of the road, no one seemed to be chasing it. The fact it was twilight seemed to make everything surreal. I unassed myself from that place as quickly as I could.”

1. No proof needed when you have a gut feeling

u/SuspectNumber6 ~ “A camping site! My friend and i took a road trip from NL to France, camping. 1st we stayed at a lovely place, near a harbour. After 2 days we continued and ended up at a small camping site. When registering we met the custodian. After registration we already looked at each other, but shrugged it off. We set up our tent and went into town to find some food.”

“The town was completely deserted: no people on the street, all blinds closed, hardly any restaurant open and the eerie feeling came back. We walked back to the camping site, still feeling creeped out and decided there and then not to sleep there that night. We broke up camp, drove away as fast as we could. The feeling stayed for about 30 minutes. Weird part is: nothing creepy really happened. It was just a gut feeling: something is NOT right here…”

Overall these are some over the top creepy experiences, and places I’ll be avoiding in the future!

The “Punxsutawney Phil” of Maine Predicts an Early Winter

All hail Passy Pete!

For the last four years, a lobster in Belfast, Maine, has correctly predicted whether summer would continue or winter would arrive early for her yearly visit.

His name is Passy Pete, and he forecasts the future by choosing between two scrolls – one that predicts six more weeks of summer (he’s kind of the anti-Punxsutawney Phil), and one that says winter is coming (soon).

For the first three years, Passy said we had six more weeks of summer to enjoy the warmth (and he was correct!). He also guessed (???) correctly in 2018 that an early winter was on the horizon.

He says the same for 2019, so maybe you can go ahead and swap out your closet.

It falls to Belfast baron Dave Crabiel to read from the scroll chosen by the lobster.

“Friends of Belfast, on this second day of September – Labor Day in the year 2019 – it’s in your best interest to collect your coats, tell your sister to return the ones you lent her, tell Cathy, the harbormaster, to remove the boats, and everyone get ready for winter.”

The crowd groaned at the news.

Crabiel and the other Belfast business owners came up with the idea when they noticed how steeply tourism dropped off after the July 4th holiday.

“While Belfast is a great community year-round, we certainly do see an increase in business in the summer with the tourists. So we thought, what if there was an anti-groundhog, somebody who could predict a longer summer, rather than predicting winter?”

It seems to be working; crowds gather to see the crustacean choose a scroll. As long as he keeps picking right, I imagine his legend will increase and more people will descend on Belfast to watch him do his magic every year.

Crabiel hopes the same.

“All four years up to this point he’s been accurate. So I don’t know – we’ll see. It’s not the result we wanted.”

A longer summer means more travelers, and more business for the town, of course, but what can you do? The lobster has spoken.

If you want to see the ceremony in action, check out this video:

As for Pete, he’s returned to the bay each year no matter which scroll he chooses, so you can’t pick your bone with him.

Take it up with Mother Nature, I guess. Or just get out your coats, gather some firewood, and settle in.

Traveling Through the Canadian Rockies in a Glass-Domed Train Looks Amazing

An extensive, leisurely train trip through Canada is on my bucket list, and it seems like this might be the best way to see at least part of that beautiful country.

Rocky Mountaineer’s Goldleaf Service looks like a fantastic and luxurious way to see the Canadian Rocky Mountains in style. Riders who use this service enjoy breathtaking mountain views from the comfort of a glass-domed train. Along with the amazing scenery, riders are served gourmet meals and wine and cheese (and complimentary alcoholic drinks and snacks).

There’s also a viewing platform so riders can step outside to enjoy the fresh air and the incredible views that only the Canadian Rockies can supply. The Goldleaf trains offer a number of different routes that riders can book. There are many great stops along the way, including Vancouver, Banff, Seattle, and Lake Louise.

The package tours also offer hotel accommodations at various points along the Goldleaf routes. The company offered four new rail cars in 2019 and will introduce three additional cars in 2020. President and CEO Steve Sammut said, “These new GoldLeaf rail cars will allow us to welcome even more guests on board our trains and offer increased availability across our most popular dates and routes.”

The new train cars have dimmable domed windows to cut down on the intensity of incoming sunlight and reclining, heated seats.

Two million people have traveled on Rocky Mountaineer trains to see the Canadian Rockies since the company started in 1990.

This looks like a great time. Book it!

A Travel Influencer Admits to Photoshopping Her Pics After People Keep Noticing the Same Cloud Formation

This influencer culture is kind of weird, right?

A travel influencer with more than 300,000 Instagram followers has admitted to using Photoshop to add cloud formations to some of her photos after people noticed the clouds were the same in multiple photos.

Tupi Saravia said that she uses photo editing software after screenshots of some of her Instagram photos went viral.

Saravia said in an email, “I can’t believe how far this went I used an app called Quickshot to help the composition of the photograph when the sky is burned or overexposed.” She added, “I just happened to like that one.”

She continued, “They were always aware about this [photo editing] because I never hide it I always tell [them] the apps I use. Actually I’m the first one to tell the joke [that] the clouds are following me around the world.”

People weighed in online after the story came to light.

If you ask me (and I know you didn’t), the whole thing is just strange. I guess traveling for free and getting products at no cost would be nice for a while, but how long can that really last? There was a survey put out this summer that revealed that American kids would rather be YouTube stars than astronauts. If that’s not depressing, I don’t know what is.

I’m shaking my head over here…

What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments – we’d like to hear from you!

Snow White Soothed a Boy with Autism at Disney World

Brody Bergner do very well around strangers, but he was looking forward to visiting Disney World.

Lauren (his mom) talked to Brody for months about what her 6 year old with autism could expect when he got there. But, knowing how sensitive her son is to crowded and noisy places, she knew she could expect at least a couple of meltdowns.

So, while waiting to meet Snow White toward the end of a full day of park hopping, Lauren could sense her tired and overstimulated boy was heading for a breakdown.

She told Today, “Brody was overheated, sweating and overwhelmed by everything. He just started crying.”

Then something happened that changed everything.

I am so emotional with these pictures !! Brody was having a meltdown . It was our turn to take pictures with her and he…

Posted by Lauren Bergner on Sunday, August 25, 2019

Snow White could see immediately that Brody was non-verbal and had special needs.

In her post, Lauren writes,

“She kissed, hugged and cuddled him. She then took him for a walk away from the crowd! She was amazing. She held his hand , danced with him , took him over to a bench and sat with him . She went above and beyond !! She took so much time with him .She was a pure angel ! She was magical and my family is forever thankful and touched !”

Lauren’s Facebook post, with pictures of Brody and Show White, was shared over 100,000 times.

She and her husband, Bill, were awed at how quickly Brody connected with the Disney princess.

Posted by Lauren Bergner on Sunday, August 25, 2019

Fearing, at one point, that the crowd would grow impatient with their family for holding up their Snow White encounters, Lauren turned around only to see everyone break into applause.

“It was this magical moment that we will never, ever forget,” she said.

And, that’s how, on a sweltering, hot day in the middle of Florida, a small boy met his princess.

People in Asia Are Sick of “Begpackers” Asking for Money to Fund Their World Travels

This is infuriating. The nerve of some people is enough to make your blood boil.

For some reason, there’s a trend in Asian countries of Western backpackers asking the locals for money to help finance their travels. There’s nothing like asking someone who has to go to work every day to give you some cash so YOU don’t have to work, right?

Jeeeez…

Obviously, the locals in these places are not fans of these folks, and I don’t blame them one bit. Let’s take a look, shall we?

1. Especially insulting in a working-class neighborhood

2. F*ck off

3. Begging

Just heard about this and I don't get it. Westerners are traveling around Asia on a shoe string budget and begging for money to fund their trip.🤑 A fellow Malaysian pointed this out and I'm really baffled why this is even happening. Is this really happening or some sort of prank??😣 So, you're from a developed country traveling to a 3rd world country begging for money? 🙈 Why not get a job and save up for your doggone trip like everyone else? Don't give the rest of us in the developed country this image.🤬 Am I wrong to think this entitlement issue is getting way out of hand??? 11. Traveling is a choice

View this post on Instagram

Yesterday I saw these blindfolded travellers asking for money in one of the most transited areas of the shopping district of Kuala Lumpur, and I have strong feelings about it. Travelling is a choice, and not only a choice but a luxurious one. When you choose to travel, to leave your confort zone and explore the world you might feel yourself as an adventurer, and you might be one, you are one among your group of privileged people. If you can actively decide to leave everything behind, take a backpack and wonder the world, it is because you have a social structure that allows you to do it. You do it because most likely your family does not need your work force to be sustained, you do it because even after months or years of travel, you can go back to a safe place were your "struggles" as a backpacker will only be a nice memory of the times when you decided to get out of your confort zone and "live". I have no troubles with the people that decide to travel and perform an art, entertain people, and from that keep travelling, or finding a part time job in different places to keep going, as long as it is legal. When I was living in Oxford I had a licence to perform in the streets and I was registered as a legal busker as a side activity. I have also performed in bars and hostels in exchange of a beer or an extra free night. I have done hardcore backpacking myself, and if it wasn't for the dozens of people that have let me stayed with them or that have helped me in other ways, I wouldn't have been able to live as many experiences. But I have never pretended that people should give me free money to keep travelling, to keep doing what the majority of the people in this planet will never be able to do, not because they don't want to but because they can't. I have always had enough to sustain myself, I plan and save for years for my travels. A Beagle-Shaped Airbnb Gives ‘Dog-Friendly Travel’ a Whole New Meaning

Do you have a pooch Need a hotel? Man, have we got the perfect Airbnb for you!

There is a beagle-shaped house in Cottonwood, Idaho, available on Airbnb for $132 per night. The house was built by Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin, artists who live in another (regular-shaped) house on the property. They started by building a 12-foot beagle named Toby in the late 1990s. It became so popular that they built a 30-foot tall beagle named Sweet Willy to use as a guest house, and that drew enough attention that they decided to rent it out to the public.

“Toby got some attention, but Sweet Willy put us into the stratosphere,” Frances told Roadside America.

The house has two bedrooms: one in the beagle’s belly and a loft in the head. The bathroom is located on the dog’s behind, of course. Nearby, there’s a giant fire hydrant to go with the giant beagle, and the property also features a visitor’s center and gift shop. Dennis and Frances live up the hill, and, since the house doesn’t have a kitchen, the couple prepare light breakfast foods for guests. There are also dog-themed books, games and puzzles for the truly dog-obsessed.

The Airbnb is, of course, dog-friendly, as long as canine guests are “responsible” and get along with the couple’s own dog — who is, shockingly, not a beagle, but a canine retriever.

Ready to book?! Sadly, so is everyone else. The Airbnb is completely filled until April 2020. But with endless 5-star reviews, it appears to be worth the wait.
