Puzzling Riddles For You to Try to Solve

When you’ve got a good thing going on, sometimes your instinct is to keep it to yourself. Too many cooks spoil the broth and all of that, am I right?

Riddles don’t really seem to be of those things. Much like puns, they’re much more delightful if you have someone to tell them to, to be able to watch their face as they’re stumped, or as they begin to work out the answer.

If you’re always on the hunt for a good riddle, here are 14 you might not have heard before now.

14. Not so simple.

A man is running down a hallway. A light flickers and he slows to a walk. What’s happened?

Answer: He’s trying to make it to a prison to present evidence that a man on death row was innocent/stop him from being executed, but he sees the light flicker from the surge of them activating the electric chair so he knows he’s too late and the prisoner was already executed??

13. I’m not sure how true this is, but.

Everyone wants one, but once you have it, you want to give it away.

Answer: A secret

12. The only possible answer.

What is greater than God, more evil than the devil and if you eat it – you die?

Answer: Nothing

11. This one stumped me.

I have four arms, six legs, spit acid and yet everyone wants me.

What am I?

Answer: A liar

10. Abstract enough to drive people nuts.

You’re trapped in a fully enclosed room with no windows and no doors. It is impossible to break through or dig under the walls. The only things you have in the room are a mirror and a table.

How do you escape?

Answer: You look in the mirror, see what you saw. Take the saw, cut the table in half. Two halves make a whole, climb out the hole.

9. I’m officially deceased.

Disclaimer: This riddle needs to be spoken, not written. Reading it here will give it away.

Two penguins are kayaking through the desert. One turns to the other and says, “Where’s your paddle?” The other replies, “Sure does.”

From experience, people go nuts trying to figure out why that’s the response. Just repeat the whole thing to them while they try to figure it out.

Answer: (The answer is, the first penguin is actually saying, “Wears your paddle.” Trying to paddle a kayak through the desert sand really wears down your paddle.)

8. This one will get you.

What’s brown and rhymes with snoop?

Answer: Dr. Dre

7. A classic for a reason.

A cowboy rides into town on Sunday and stays for two days and nights and leaves on Friday. How did he do it?

Answer: His horse is named Friday.

6. Either way.

A man walks into a bar asking for water. The bartender looks at him for a moment and fires a gun into the ceiling. A little bit surprised the man thanks the bartender and walks out. What the heck was happening?

Answer: The man in question had hiccups. The shock of the gunshot cured them for him

5. Not a trick question.

You’re on a game show with three doors. Only one has a prize. You pick Door 3. They show you Door 2 (which they know) is empty.

Do you stay with Door 3, or switch to Door 1?

Answer: Switching doors gives you a higher probability of success. This is the Monty Hall Problem.

4. I love this one.

What rooms have no walls?

Answer: Mushrooms

3. Too many prisoners.

Four prisoners are arrested for a crime, but the jail is full and the jailer has nowhere to put them. He eventually comes up with the solution of giving them a puzzle so if they succeed they can go free but if they fail they are executed.

The jailer puts three of the men sitting in a line. The fourth man is put behind a screen (or in a separate room). He gives all four men party hats. The jailer explains that there are two black and two white hats; that each prisoner is wearing one of the hats; and that each of the prisoners is only to see the hats in front of them but not on themselves or behind. The fourth man behind the screen can’t see or be seen by any other prisoner. No communication between the prisoners is allowed.

If any prisoner can figure out and say to the jailer what color hat he has on his head all four prisoners go free. If any prisoner suggests an incorrect answer, all four prisoners are executed. The puzzle is to find how the prisoners can escape, regardless of how the jailer distributes the hats.

Answer:

The 3rd prisoner, seeing 2 black/white hats, will know that his is white/black and will say immediately.

If the 3rd prisoner sees 1 black and 1 white, he will stay quiet for some time. The 2nd prisoner will notice that and realise that he and the 1st prisoner has a black and white each. The 2nd prisoner who can see white/black on the 1st prisoner will deduce that his own hat is black/white respectively.

2. An oldie but a goodie.

What is red, but smells like blue paint?

Answer: Red paint

1. 99 people, 1 problem.

You and 99 other people are kidnapped and placed in solitary confinement for an indefinite amount of time, having no way to communicate with the others.

You will all either gain your freedom or be put to death depending on if you can answer the kidnappers correctly.

Each hour, one person at random (you are also in the random mix of 100 total people) is taken into a room with two switches that resemble light switches. They are face-up on a table. There is nothing else in the room. There’s nothing to write with and no possible way to communicate with anyone else by any means like writing in the walls or anything like that. You are required to flip one of the switches when brought to the room, no matter what. After you flip the switch, you get escorted back to your solitary confinement. Also, you can only flip one of them each time you get taken into the room.

Being selected at random, the same person can go twice in a row, or three or four or 50 times in a row (who knows right? It’s random).

You must tell the captors when all 99 have been through the room in order to gain your freedom. You only have one opportunity and if you guess correctly, you are given your freedom. If you guess incorrectly, you get out to death.

You have 15 minutes to plan with the other 99 so that they have the same plan as you to know when everyone has been through. How do you do it?

Answer: One person is designated as the leader, only they may flip the first switch down. Each person when going into the room will look at the first switch, and flip it up if it is their first or second time seeing the switch down (more on this later).

The leader keeps track of how many times he has flipped the first switch down, and once he gets to a total twice the number of people who are not leader, so in this case, 198. The reason that each person does it twice is to prevent the possibility that any given person is never selected to go in the room and the switch happens to be up initially.

In that scenario the leader would’ve switched it 99 times without said person ever visiting the room, however with 198, the issue with the switch being up to start is negated because having flipped it up an extra time past the 196 mark (98×2), the leader knows person 99 has visited at least once

I’m definitely going to memorize a few of these for future use.

Riddles That People Just Love to Tell

If someone asked you about your favorite riddle, would you have an answer? Do you have one that just gets the reaction you want every single time, one you just can’t wait to pull out at parties?

If so, you would feel at home with these 12 people, who jumped at the chance to share their favorite stumper on Reddit – and now we all know 12 more great riddles, too.

12. Is this from a movie? I feel like it is.

Tear me off and scratch my head. What once was red is black instead.

Answer: A match

11. Not what you think.

Two old fishermen are sitting by the fire talking. One says “The ones we caught we threw away. The ones we didn’t catch we kept!”, and his friend agrees.

What are they talking about?

Answer: Their fleas

10. I love it.

This one is very heavy on lateral thinking – after giving the opening to the riddle (below), tell the other person they may ask as many questions they want to figure the answer out providing you can answer it with “Yes”, “No”, or “That’s irrelevant”.

A man walks into a restaurant and sits down at a table. He orders a seagull sandwich from the menu. The sandwich arrives, the man takes a bite of it, then leaves the restaurant, goes home, and commits suicide. Why?

Your friend is then expected to get the following convoluted solution from their questioning, which from experience people either love the game to figure it out, or loathe how out there the correct answer is.

Answer: The man is a widower whose wife died on a holiday in the past. They were on a cruise when the ship capsized. The man and his wife made it onto a lifeboat with a few other survivors and washed up on a deserted island.

The man’s wife and another survivor went to search for food and eventually the stranger returns with a large amount of “seagull meat”, but unfortunately informs the man that his wife was killed (fell to her death, gored by a bore, or anything else) during the expedition. They eat the “seagull”, and after being rescued the man returns home alone.

In the restaurant the man orders a dish containing seagull meat, and upon taking a bite he notices that the taste is not the same as the “seagull” he ate on the island. The revelation makes him realise what actually happened that day, an unable to live with the guilt of eating his wife, he kills himself.

9. Too many gods.

Three gods A, B, and C are called, in no particular order, True, False, and Random. True always speaks truly, False always speaks falsely, but whether Random speaks truly or falsely is a completely random matter

Your task is to determine the identities of A, B, and C by asking three yes-no questions; each question must be put to exactly one god. The gods understand English, but will answer all questions in their own language, in which the words for yes and no are da and ja, in some order. You do not know which word means which.

A single god may be asked more than one question, questions are permitted to depend on the answers to earlier questions, and the nature of Random’s response should be thought of as depending on the flip of a fair coin hidden in his brain: if the coin comes down heads, he speaks truly; if tails, falsely.

Answer: You tell us!

8. Ask all of the questions.

A man is driving on the highway. At one point, he stops, gets out of his car and shots himself. Why?

Answer: He’s a radio anchorman. He killed his wife for insurance fraud or whatever reason and wanted to cover it up by pre-recording his show which normally airs live to have an alibi for the time period when his wife was killed.

After the deed, he was driving home and heard his own voice on the radio… but the tape got stuck and now everyone knows his “live” show was pre-recorded.

He kills himself upon realizing his alibi won’t work

7. What to do first?

A mountain climber, barely alive in the middle of a freezing blizzard, stumbles upon a wooden cabin. Pulling himself inside and well aware that he’s got severe hypothermia on his face, hands and feet, he surveys the interior.

There’s a small wood-burning stove and even an old propane barbecue, although our hiker can’t remember if burning propane indoors is safe. On a small bedside table is an aromatherapy candle, although the climber isn’t sure how much heat it’ll give off, and an antique oil lantern less than a quarter full.

Going through his supplies, the hiker discovers he only has one wooden match left. And with less than ten minutes before he succumbs to the frostbite, his survival depends on making the right choice.

What does the hiker light first?

Answer: The match

6. Simple but great.

What can travel the world while staying in a corner?

Answer: A stamp

5. Everybody together now!

4 people are trying to cross a bridge. One can cross in 1 minute, one can cross in 2 minutes, one can cross in 5 minutes, and one can cross in 10 minutes. The bridge can only support 2 people at a time.

They only have one flashlight and whenever a person/group is crossing, they must carry the flashlight. What’s the quickest amount of time to get everyone across?

Answer: 17 minutes.

The 1 min and 2 min go together (2 min), the 1 min comes back (1 min) and sends the 5 min and 10 min together (10 min), the 2 min comes back with the light (2 min) and brings the 1 min with him (2 min).

4. I had to think about this.

What can be filled with empty hands.

Answer: Gloves

3. You can only tell it verbally.

One knight, a king and a queen put their baby to bed. Then the king and queen leave the room. In the morning the baby was dead, how did it die?

Answer: The knight killed it.

If you’re speaking, most people will assume you said “night.”

2. That’s a ton of information.

Looking for something? Open me. I’m sure that your something inside of me lies. Of course, you could always find hope in me. Though, despair must come first, and later surprise. What’s sought, though, depends on the seeker.

Some look for bobbin, others for beaker. Others for nature. Still others for nurture. The quarry will vary from searcher to searcher. And, yet, I suspect this will strike you as strange: My contents are set and will not ever change.

If you still cannot guess what I mean, here’s a clue: The answer, what I mean, lies inside of me, too. What am I?

Answer: An unabridged dictionary

1. A classic!

How far can a dog run into the woods?

Answer: Halfway. After that he’s running out of the woods.

Definitely going to make some of these my own – my set could always use some fresh blood.

This TikTok Video Shows That Whatever Word You Read, You Will Also Hear

Brainteasers are a fun way to pass the time, especially for those of us who are stuck at home.

Do you remember the Yanni/Laurel and black/gold dress controversies from a few years back? Well, there’s a new audio illusion in town and a simple explanation as to how your brain deciphers messages along with it.

First, give it a try. It’s easy to do—just read one of the words you see in the video posted by @emilysophie.m, and that’s the word you’ll hear every time.

So, what makes this happen? According to science, something called the McGurk Effect. It’s a phenomenon of perception that demonstrates how your hearing, vision, and speech interact with each other. It occurs when what you hear is paired with what you see, leading to the perception of a sound that only exists as you read the word.

In other words, your visual informs what you hear. In this case, both words are being said at the same time at different frequencies, and your brain is filling in the blanks.

Of course, like Yanni/Laurel and the black or gold dress, this illusion also went viral across social media, with people from all walks of life weighing in. While most people came out on one side or the other, some didn’t hear anything.

And some only heard one word, no matter what they read.

And, well…

To be fair, the McGurk Effect doesn’t work for everyone. This can be chalked up to having different hearing abilities or brain processes.

Which word did you hear? Let us know in the comments below!
