Pumpkins aren’t the first vegetable to have been carved. Long before carving pumpkins became popular, the Celtic people of Ireland carved turnips and lit them with embers to ward off evil spirits, a practise that’s the root of modern pumpkin carving today.

This Is How to Successfully Escape from a Corn Maze

Chances are you’ll visit a place that has the dreaded corn maze this fall. A big one, with all the twists and turns…and you might get lost. Without a birds-eye view of the monstrosity, it’s easy to get trapped.

That’s where this trick comes in, provided by Kotaku. Nathan Fouts works in the gaming industry where he creates mazes for a living. Given his experience, his maze-related advice is top notch. He recently visited an Indiana farm, explaining, “With my interest in puzzles and design, I was eager to explore in a real maze. I hadn’t been through a corn maze in many years. But as I crested the hill to overlook the massive, 12 acre field, a tiny worry crept into my mind.”

But he still had to try it.

“We were given a map of the maze, which was reassuring, but, again, following a paper map is a bit trickier than following dynamically updating directions in your car. As we made our way through the maze, full of dead ends, and twists and turns, a new thought dawned on me: We’re safe. If we simply follow the wall. If we always take a right turn, and never change, we’ll get out easily.”

And they did! He used the “wall follower rule” to successfully exit the maze. Per his advice, making turns in the same direction will get you there. It doesn’t matter if you always turn right to follow the wall or always turn left, as long as you turn the same way every time. Just make sure you don’t get confused and veer off course.

Here he provides us with a basic map to illustrate his technique.

“Imagine holding your right hand against the wall. If you happen to find a dead end, turn 180 degrees. Now with your right hand on the other side, exit the dead end, and eventually turn to the right and down a new path.”

Since corn mazes typically start and end on the outside walls of the maze, traveling the “wall” will get you out. Here it is in “action”.

Seems simple enough!

But…there is a catch. Not all mazes are structured like this, meaning not all have parts that are connected to the main frame. You could find yourself in a maze with an island or a bridge that will make you re-think this technique.

“If there are bridges or passovers within the maze, the wall follower method may still work, or may not. It depends on if the bridge deposits you into a maze island, that is separated from the outer wall.”

The most important thing, though, is that the maze has to start and finish at an outside wall for this technique to help you. If the ‘end’ of the maze is somewhere in the middle, then you’re out of luck.

Also, if you’re in a haunted maze, you have to remember to keep following the wall and turning the way you decided even when you’re being chased…which might be tough.

But, honestly, don’t worry if you get lost! Just have fun and enjoy the challenge of finding the exit. If you need to escape, you can always walk through the stalks of corn until you come to a row then follow the row to the end of the field. Good luck!

Last-Minute Halloween Costumes for the Procrastinator in All of Us

We previously featured some creative and clever homemade Halloween costumes made by overachievers. Today, we’re featuring the opposite: costumes that someone clearly threw together at the very last minute. The kind of costume you get when you forget it’s Halloween and grab whatever’s available.

A few of these costumes have the sort of simple charm that makes people regret spending $400 on their ultra-realistic Voldemort costume. But most are laughably awful, not even worthy of an honorable mention in a costume contest.

Hey, I don’t judge. This will absolutely be me in a couple weeks.

1. Candy “Rappers”

Get it?! Because “rappers” rhymes with “wrappers”! Not only does this costume involve wordplay, it gives you an excuse to scarf down 50 pieces of candy in one sitting.

2. 50 Shades of Grey

Minimal effort, minimal hassle. Unless you count the fight with the Home Depot guy for taking too many paint samples.

3. Salt and Pepper

This is the sort of costume that will have everyone at the party coming up to you and asking what the hell it is. Are you guys…Salmonella and Puberty?

4. Pigs in a Blanket

Not bad!

5. Identity Thief

Is she an identity thief, or is she a woman with 14 different personalities? Either way: fun!

6. Weatherman in a hurricane.

Partly cloudy with a chance of SUCCESS!

7. God’s gift to men/women.

Hopefully men/women kept the receipt.

8. American tourists.

Does Paris have a TGI Friday’s? These two know!

9. Audrey Hepburn

A great way to reuse that dress from your great aunt’s funeral.

10. Rosie the Riveter

Easy! All you need is a denim shirt, a bandana, and a can-do attitude.

11. Red Box movie rentals

This costume’s cheap, easy, and requires no planning whatsoever–just like renting from Red Box!

12. When life gives you lemons…hold up the lemons and shrug?

Is she supposed to be the entire saying, or is she supposed to be life itself, about to give someone lemons? I’m confused. D minus.

13. Ariel from The Little Mermaid, moments after arriving on land.

Nice and simple. Just make sure you wash your bedsheet first.

This Is What You Need to Know About the Starbucks ‘Cinderella Latte’ This Pumpkin Season

Here are the facts: there’s no escaping Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) season at Starbucks. It’s a national phenomenon, and people are obsessed with it.

And now it’s time to add another Starbucks drink to the list of seasonal favorites.

I’m talking about the “Cinderella Latte,” and you better act fast because these concoctions will be available only as long as the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte this fall. The Cinderella Latte has been around since 2018 when a Seattle-area barista who’d worked at Starbucks for 7 years came up with the drink, but it has kind flown under the radar, so here’s your chance to order it the right way and be a happier person.

The now famous Cinderella Latte has been spreading magic at coffee shops everywhere this Fall☕🎃✨ Raise your hand if you have already tried my Disney inspired version of the classic Pumkin Spice Latte?! I still CANNOT believe the number of DM’s, posts and stories that are still coming in. This pic taken by @inkprincess143 of her Cinderella Latte is one of my faves! – THE STORY: I was a barista @starbucks for 7 years here in the Seattle area and I came up with a couple of Disney inspired drinks to spread a little magic to my customers & coworkers. I’ll be sharing another one soon! – CINDERELLA LATTE RECIPE: – Order a Pumpkin Spice Latte – Can be made hot, iced or a blended Frappuccino. – Sub half of the Pumpkin Spice pumps with White Mocha (Or if you have a real sweet tooth, try full pumps of each! 😉) – The white pumpkin reminded me of Cinderella’s coach and that’s why I call it the Cinderella Latte 🎃✨ – THE TEE!! Cinderella latte tees are in the shop now! – YOUR HOMEWORK: Now, go try one for yourself and tag me in your post or stories. Maybe we’ll get @starbucks attention and add it to the menu on Main Street!! – 📷 @inkprincess143 – – – – – – #happiestteesonearth #starbucks #disneystarbucks #starbucksdisney #psl #cinderellalatte #dcpfall2018 #castmembers #greenapron #sbux #coffee #disneymagic #disneysmmoms #disneylove #cinderella #disneygirls #foodsofdisneyland #disneyhungry #disneyfoodie #disneyfoodies #dressedindisney #styledbymagic #disneylifestylers #disneylifestyle #pumpkinspicelatte #pumpkinspice

Ready? Okay. Since this is a secret-menu kind of deal, you can’t just order a Cinderella Latte when you hit your local Starbucks. It’s a little more complicated than that. Pay attention, because you don’t want to BLOW IT. Listen carefully:

  • Order a Pumpkin Spice Latte (I’m sure you know how to do that).
  • Substitute White Chocolate Mocha for half the pumps of Pumpkin Sauce (so you’ll get two pumps of Pumpkin Sauce and two pumps of White Chocolate Mocha).

If you don’t consider yourself a latte person, you can also order this combination as an iced latte or as a frappucino. You can also mix up the pumps if you really want to. Try four pumps of Pumpkin Sauce and four of White Chocolate Mocha, or maybe just one of each if you don’t have an intense sweet tooth.

Give the Cinderella Latte a shot and enjoy fall! It’s right around the corner!

We’re Here to Inform You That Pumpkin Spice Spam Exists

I’m really sorry I have to break this awful news to you, but someone’s gotta do it. Fall is almost here and that means Pumpkin Spice everything. Food, drinks, etc. Is there a Pumpkin Spice perfume or cologne yet? I’ll have to look into that…

But one product you might not know about that really, truly does exist: Pumpkin Spice Spam. Why not, right? The new product will only be available on Spam.com and Walmart.com starting September 23, so don’t go looking for it on the shelves of your local store.

And…we already have an advance review in. The folks at The Daily Meal tried out Pumpkin Spice Spam and this is what they had to say:

“Although this is one of the more peculiar pumpkin spice products on the market, surprisingly, the general consensus was that the flavor really wasn’t bad. It certainly had that soft texture that anyone who’s had Spam will be familiar with, as well as the expected salty, porky Spam flavor.

Cinnamon, clove, allspice and nutmeg shared center stage with the rich and savory Spam flavor, however, along with a hint of sweetness.”

Not bad, huh? The company actually flirted with the idea of Pumpkin Spice Spam back in 2017 but their social media post was met with a lot of backlash.

Just in time for fall—SPAM® Pumpkin Spice! Ok, it might not be real, but you can still put it on your holiday wishlist! Would you?

Posted by SPAM on Sunday, October 1, 2017

But I can assure you, this is not a joke anymore! So get ready!

Be sure to order online starting September 23 if you want to see what Pumpkin Spice Spam is all about.

The New Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew from Starbucks Is Here to Help You Get Ready for Fall

You know how hyped everyone gets when the pumpkin spice drinks get fired up at Starbucks every fall. Well, it’s time to add a new pumpkin-flavored beverage to your rotation.

Starbucks has launched the new Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, so we can all rejoice in the fact that we have even more options now. It’s available now in stores in the United States and Canada, and it looks like a welcome addition to all you coffee lovers out there.

Now, I know the weather isn’t cold enough yet, but it will be soon – and it’s never really too early for anything pumpkin-related, am I right? The Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew is the first new pumpkin-flavored coffee drink that Starbucks has released in 16 years, so you know people are definitely jonesing for it.

The drink is mostly cold brew and vanilla, but it has a pumpkin cream cold foam topping that is made with real pumpkins. Yes – real pumpkins. There’s also a dusting of pumpkin spice on the top for good measure.

If for some reason this new drink doesn’t suit your fancy, you still have a variety of pumpkin-themed treats you can enjoy at your local Starbucks. Pumpkin scones, pumpkin cream cheese muffins and Pumpkin Spice Madeleines, to name a few.

Decided to be a basic bitch and try the new Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew from @starbucks I never had a PSL before, nor did I ever feel the need to get one. But so many people were saying that they liked this more, and that it was so good. So I broke, and gave into the peer pressure lol. I regret it, I didn't like it at all. It smelled like a pumpkin pie, but just tasted like slightly sweetened coffee. I would not purchase this again. I will just stick to my caramel macchiato's. #starbucks #pumpkincream #coldbrew #pumpkincreamcoldbrew #new #newdrink #prefercaramelmacchiato #sticktowhatiknow #itsanofromme #notabasicbitch #food #drink #coffee #foodie #foodstagram #foodofinstagram #drinkstagram #drinksofinstagram #coffeeofinstagram

Clearly, you’re going to have a whole smorgasbord of pumpkin-related items to choose from at Starbucks this autumn. And here’s a little fact to get you in the mood: since Starbucks debuted its Pumpkin Spice Latte in 2003, they’ve sold more than 424 million of those babies in the U.S. alone. I think we can now call this a national obsession, don’t you?

Bring on that fall weather!
