An “Elf” Version of Monopoly Is Now on Shelves

There are a ton of Christmas and holiday movies out there. If you love them, you have no end to your choices when it comes to holiday cheer.

That said, many people really, really seem to love Elf.

It doesn’t hurt that most people also love Will Ferrell, and as far as I can tell, Elf might be his most universally loved film.

Which is saying a lot.

If you love Elf, maybe this Monopoly game would make the perfect gift for yourself – or for your household, if you’re into torturing everyone you live with, too.

USAopoly is promising us a “trip down memory lane,” in this version of the classic game, which includes characters, locations and quotes from the 2003 movie starring Will Ferrell.

According to Amazon, we’ll be able to “relive the hilarious movie Elf featuring the journey of Buddy the Elf from the North Pole where he passed the seven levels of the candy cane forest, through the sea of swirly-twirly gumdrops, and then through the Lincoln Tunnel.”

Sounds kind of like Candyland to me, but ok.

The Community Chest cards are renamed Christmas Cheer, and the Chance cards Christmas Spirit, because Buddy wouldn’t have it any other way.

The tokens are said to depict Santa’s sleigh, a polar bear cub, a jack-in-the-box, a mailroom coffee mug, Santa’s toy sack, and maple syrup.

Like the regular game, anywhere from 2-6 players are welcome, ages 8+, and it will take you at least 60 minutes to play.

Unlike the regular game, there will be some “special rules” specifically for this edition.

“Grab a token and your elf shoes, and travel around the board spreading Christmas cheer – and don’t forget to sing loud for all to hear! Set forth on your quest to own it all, but first you will need to know the basic game rules along with custom Monopoly: Elf rules.”

You can grab the special edition for around $40.

I mean, I guess torture-by-Monopoly is one of those rights of passage.

I just wish other, better games would start making themed versions so we could get excited about the tie-in and the game.

Know what I mean?

Symbolic Artwork and More Details From Pixar Movies That Made Us Tear Up

I’m fully prepared to cry when I sit down for a Pixar movie at this point. It’s just part of the experience. We all know it’s true.

Pixar promises three things: 1) real, humanized characters dealing with 2) real, relatable issues in a 3) fully fleshed out, detailed world.

That said, I hope you’re ready to cry over symbolic artwork and 10 other details from Pixar movies that you may not have noticed before.

1. A play on words:

Pixar’s 2018 short, Bao, written and directed by Domee Shi, tells the story of a lonely Chinese-Canadian mother experiencing empty nest syndrome. She receives an unexpected gift when her steamed bun (baozi) comes to life, a la the Gingerbread man.

“Bao” is a play on words. 包, pronounced “bao”, is Mandarin Chinese for “dumpling.” However, this pronunciation is shared by 宝, meaning “treasure” or “baby”, and 保, meaning “protect” or “defend”. See what they did there?

2. Boo’s lines were off the cuff:

Have you ever wondered why all of Boo’s lines from Monster’s Inc (2001) sound so real and natural?

Mary Gibbs, the actress who voiced Boo, had a difficult time staying put in the recording booth to perform her lines, so the crew decided to follow her around with a microphone and record her as she played. They were able to cut and piece her lines together for the final draft using random things she said and noises she made while playing.

3. Carl and Ellie’s items match their personalities:

In Pixar’s Up (2009), the animators were very intentional with how they designed Carl and Ellie, and their home. All of Ellie’s items are rounded, to reflect her round head and (I’m assuming) soft, inviting personality.

All of Carl’s objects are square to match his square jaw, and more stubborn, stoic, rigid personality.

4. Foreshadowing what is to come:

Once again, in Pixar’s Up the animators utilize every detail on screen to help tell the story. In the top shot we see Carl and Ellie as a young, newly married couple. Ellie stands atop a hill, beckoning to Carl, as she did when they were kids. The sky is bright and hopeful. In the background we see what looks to be a clock tower and their quaint town.

In the second image the roles are reversed.  Now Carl stands atop the hill, beckoning to Ellie (who will soon be leaving us). The sun is now setting, the day will soon end. In the background we see their quiet town has become a large, metropolitan city.

This displays the passing of time while also foreshadowing the fact that Carl will soon find himself alone, in a house surrounded by newly built skyscrapers and continuous construction. Crying yet?

5. Miguel knows how to play:

In Coco (2017), as audience members, we initially don’t know the extent of Miguel’s skill with the guitar. He even admits to Héctor, he’s never performed for people before.

However, once Miguel gets past his initial stage fright, he shows everyone just how talented he truly. In fact, if you watch his hands as he plays in this movie, you will notice he playing the actual chords to the songs he’s performing. Talk about detail!

6. Riley’s clothes reflect her emotions:

In Inside Out (2015) Riley’s clothes become less joyful and more muted as she becomes more and more distraught. And it makes sense, because that’s what we do as real people! We use clothes to express how we’re feeling.

Just one more example of how Pixar animators use every inch of the screen to help tell the story.

7. Toy Story 3:

In Toy Story 3 (2010), when Woody peers past the door, we can height measurements of Andy’s toys on the doorframe.

Just this little detail hits us right in the feels, because it’s such a small detail but so real. Just like Andy’s mom has measured Andy over the years, she’s also measured his most treasured toy friends.

8. “That’s Mr. Potato Head to You!”

In Toy Story 4, Mr. Potato Head is voiced posthumously by his original voice actor, Don Rickles (who passed away in 2017.)

The Pixar team sorted through decades of Rickles’ voice over sessions, outtakes for other films, theme parts, toys, etc. to create a performance for the fourth movie.

Some might find this creepy, but I think it’s really meaningful that they spent the time to make Mr. Rickles a part of the film, rather than just hire a new actor.

9. Toys can live forever?

This one might be sad depending on how you think about it. No, this isn’t a shot from Toy Story, it’s actually a segment from WALL-E (2008). But who do we have here? None other than our favorite dinosaur toy, Rex!

It seems that toys really can live forever, provided nothing destroys them. But if Rex is here, where are all his friends? What happened to them? Is he all alone? Why doesn’t he reveal his sentience to WALL-E? This Easter egg might actually raise more concerns that the animators intended…

10. Art becomes life, life becomes art:

In Incredibles 2, we see Helen Incredible alone in her fancy hotel room, phoning her family. Behind her is a rather large painting. Things could just be fancy hotel art, but let’s be real, this is Pixar we’re talking about.

If you take another look, you’ll see this painting is a metaphor for the Incredible family in this moment. It illustrates Helen’s current distance from her family. She’s left her husband to take care of the family while she takes cares of crime.

11. Violet is literally a combination of both her parents:

In Incredibles (2004), we’re given a glimpse into the past. We see that Mr. Incredible’s original suit was blue while Elstagirl’s original suit was red.

What color do you get when you mix red and blue? Violet. What’s the name of Mr. and Mrs. Incredible’s first child? “Violet.” (D’aww!)

Would you like a tissue? *sniff*

As much as I hate how it messes up my mascara, it feels good to cry over something that has truly touched my heart.

When you becomes invested in these characters and their world, those little details that you hadn’t noticed before make it that much more special.

At the same time, it’s all those details coming together that draw you into the story in the first place.

The Creepy Mothman of West Virginia Gets a Closer Look in New Documentary

If you’re not into the kinds of tales that send weird chills down your spine, then you may never have heard about the mysterious Mothman who appeared in Point Pleasant, West Virginia back in the 1960s.

In November of 1966, two couples spotted a winged, man-shaped monster near the “TNT area,” a collection of abandoned bunkers where explosives were stored during WWII. The local newspaper reported on the events, and suddenly, more sightings began popping up.

When nearly 50 people were killed in a bridge collapse the following December, more than a few Point Pleasant residents believed the Mothman could have caused the tragedy.

The mysterious creature’s popularity endured with the help of a 1975 novel by John Keel, The Mothman Prophecies, which also spawned a 2002 movie adaptation starting Richard Gere and Laura Linney.

While the bulk of the sightings happened back in the 60’s, some are still reporting close encounters today. The creature has inspired a statue, a museum, and an annual festival that all bring tourists (and tourism dollars) to the small, West Virginia community.

Now, director Seth Breedlove is tackling the history of the Mothman in his documentary, The Mothman LegacyIn it, he investigates the history and legacy of the creature and also interviews more recent eyewitnesses to its appearance.

Breedlove appears to be a bit hooked on the topic, as he also directed The Mothman of Point Pleasant back in 2017, which focuses on the more historical accounts, along with the bridge catastrophe.

The latest documentary, bolstered by author and expert Jeff Wamsley, who has written two books on the subject, doesn’t try to solve or disprove the mystery, but instead seems to almost celebrate the enduring urban legend.

You can watch it on Amazon Prime or YouTube.

It’s fascinating viewing any time of the year, and for any mood.

That said, if you’re looking for something delightfully mysterious and spooky, this should definitely fit the bill.

People Discuss Their Worst Movie Theater Experiences

Have you ever had a really bad experience at the movies?

A time that was so bad it made you never want to go back?

Well, we’re about to read a whole bunch of stories from folks who had really bad movie theater experiences.

Are you ready?

Let’s dive into some stories from AskReddit users about their worst movie theater experiences.

1. Take it outside.

“Was watching Aquaman with my sister and there was a couple behind us. The girl was clearly unaware of superhero films.

During the fight scenes she asked him very loudly where Ironman was. And when it was the intermission, she asked him angrily when Spiderman was making an appearance.

Turns out she was into Tom Holland and her boyfriend told her he was in Aquaman to get her to come along. They fought for a while.”

2. Sounds like a great film.

“Saw Cats.

My friend group decided that we’d see it as a joke and Jesus Christ I swear we left within the first five minutes.

We wanted to gouge out our eyes.”

3. Not a pleasant viewing experience.

“I was watching “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” with my mum and sister. To make the movie viewable to most audiences, my city’s censor board had cut off scenes.

So all the throat slashing was cut off and it was annoying as hell. They replaced those scenes with random shots from the same scene. So the lip syncing was off at most places. They didn’t even show any blood.

And sitting a little away from us was a group of young teens who got annoyed every time a song began. They would tut and make sounds and ask things like “why are there so many songs” or “another song?” and my sister at one time was so frustrated that she yelled back saying “It’s called a musical for a reason.””

4. At least you got paid off.

“It was in the middle of the movie, people starting yelling at some guy for sneezing to loud and the person above me turned around too fast and spilled a bunch of pop on my head.

I finished the movie and they guy gave me money to get something because he felt bad.

Best worst day ever.”

5. Are you still together?

“First time at the cinema with my boyfriend – he talked more to the stranger next to him than to me – before, during AND after the movie.

Sh*tty experience for me… If I hadn’t been in a foreign country I would’ve gotten up and left before the movie even started!”

6. Oops!

“I was on a first date with a guy I really liked. Towards the last quarter of the movie, I had to pee very badly.

So I get up and start trotting towards the exit, but when I’m halfway across the theatre, LITERALLY FRONT ROW CENTRE, the heel of one of my shoes broke.

I went sprawling face first onto the floor. In front of the ENTIRE (pretty packed) movie theatre. There was no second date.”

7. Uncomfortable.

“As a teen, I went on a double date with this guy who kept asking me out. My sister’s BF insisted that he’s really a nice guy when you get to know him.

We saw “Shampoo” the Warren Beatty film. It was really raunchy and inappropriate for teens. Adults were walking out indignantly with their young children (you guessed it, there were no warnings then or rating system).

I was mortified because he kept laughing at the worst times, and slapping his knees and all that. My sis and I wanted to leave, so we ended up leaving early.

Needless to say, I never went out with this guy again.”

8. STOP TALKING.

“Once I went to a movie with my sister and my friend. We were seated next to a woman and her ex-husband.

She spent almost the entire movie complaining to him about how he never posted anything on Facebook about her anymore, and that he always tagged his new girlfriend in his posts. The poor guy stayed pretty quiet the entire time while she cried and whined.

I’m not surprised he divorced her.”

9. Fire hazard.

“Years back sitting in the theater and saw a flicker of light off to my right in the row behind me. Guy had tossed his cigarette butt and it rapidly took off in the theater floor litter.

Everyone got out OK but it was exciting for a bit.

Seems weird now but people used to smoke everywhere.”

10. What is wrong with people?

“I was in a movie theater once with my family and little nephew and we were watching Monsters Inc.

Around 20 minutes into the movie, we started hearing some strange noises that were reminiscent of moans. We tried to ignore it but they became louder and I got up to see what was happening when someone yelled “OH GOD YES”.

Needless to say when I got down there I discovered a man and a woman, engaging in s*xual intercourse in the middle of a children’s movie.

Mike and Sully did not approve and we never visited the theater again…”

11. Drive-in.

“I was 15 and dating a guy whose family collected vintage cars and drove them in parades etc. He picked me up in a Model T pickup truck.

It was cool and exciting. He took me to the drive-in where we watched Deliverance. Midway through the movie, my date absolutely freaked out, went hysterical, thrashed around and finally jumped out of the vehicle, leaving me totally confused and clueless.

I’m like “WHAT??” and he finally gasped out “SPIDER!” Yeah, first date was last date…”

12. Total bummer.

“It was my first time in a movie theatre (not counting those crappy ones that schools say are movies) and I was with my friends. It was a new film and we were all really pumped to see it.

Well… Turns out it was a 3D movie and we had to wear those glasses. Which is fine, except for one flaw… I wore glasses myself and those 3D ones did not fit so I had to sit in a movie theatre with one hand holding my glasses up to see the actual screen.

Then someone bumped into me while I was holding a Slushee (I think) and it spilled. Aaaaand then there was a thunderstorm so the power went out for half an hour.”

Okay, now it’s time for YOU to entertain US.

In the comments, share your absolute worst movie theater experience.

We can’t wait to hear from you!
