1. The Scientific Explanation Behind Haunted Houses
A large number of purported haunted houses, when investigated, have been found to possess high levels of carbon monoxide or other poisonous substances. This can result in the inhabitants experiencing hallucinations, leading them to believe in the presence of otherworldly entities. This theory, often referred to as the carbon monoxide theory, also clarifies why such hauntings are more commonly reported in older houses. The older appliances, due to their age and resulting defects, are more prone to emitting harmful gases.

2. The Doorless Village Trusting in the Supernatural
In an intriguing display of faith in the supernatural, the Indian village of Shani Shingnapur lacks any doors or locks. The villagers believe in divine protection and the integrity of their community to deter criminal activities, relying on an age-old tradition of supernatural safeguarding.

3. The Legally Haunted House in New York
In a rather unusual legal condition, there’s a house in New York that is officially recognized as haunted. Consequently, the seller is legally obligated to disclose the house’s supernatural status to potential buyers, making it perhaps the most transparent ghostly real estate deal you’ll ever come across.

4. Increasing Belief in Ghosts and UFOs
According to a 2019 study, the belief in ghosts and UFOs among Americans has seen a considerable rise since 2007. What’s more fascinating is the gender difference in these beliefs. Men, interestingly, were found to be more inclined towards the existence of UFOs, while women demonstrated a stronger belief in ghosts and witchcraft.

5. The Theatre Ghost Tradition
A popular belief rooted in the world of theater asserts that every theater houses a ghost. For instance, the Palace Theatre in London maintains a unique tradition to honor this belief. Two seats in their balcony are perpetually reserved, serving as exclusive seating for their resident apparitions.

From the cold facts of science to the warm traditions of theater, the world of the haunted and the paranormal is full of surprising stories and facts. Hopefully, these five fascinating facts have given you a fresh glimpse into this mysterious world.

Ghosts vs UFOs

A study conducted in 2019 revealed that among Americans, there has been a rise in the belief in ghosts and UFOs since 2007. It is interesting to note that men tend to have a higher belief in UFOs, while women tend to have a stronger belief in ghosts and witchcraft compared to the opposite gender.

People Who Have Lived in Haunted Houses Talk About Their Experiences

Just to be clear, we’re not talking about the haunted houses you pay to go into during October to be scared, friends.

We’re talking about legit haunted houses where people thought they were being tormented to ghosts, spirits, demons, and anything else that goes bump in the night.

Do you believe in ghosts? Well, maybe you will after reading these posts.

Here’s what folks on AskReddit had to say about their creepy encounters.

1. Away at college.

“I lived in at an old house in Birmingham (UK) when I was at Uni.

I can’t say for certain it was haunted but we got it dirt cheap as no-one wanted to stay there and it was definitely…odd.

I’m fairly certain I saw the old man, I was up late at my desk finishing an essay and got a weird buzzing in my ear. I turned round to see an old mans face grinning at me.

I fell of my chair and through myself across the room falling and subsequently breaking my bedside lamp. I honestly could not stop shaking and stayed up all night chainsmoking.

My housemate, witnessed her bathroom door flying opening and lights flickering.

We all started getting really low and arguing (normal i guess) but we dreaded the house, some of stayed over at others so we could sleep better. Started becoming reclusive.

My other housemate was downstairs (bedroom) she used to wake up to knocks all the time. You could hear it from upstairs, she moved out first.

I’m sure there are other things that I’ve blocked out and I’m sure all these can be rationally explained but we were all very happy when we left. It was sold after we went.”

2. Unexplained.

“Growing up my father saw a home as an investment, so we would typically buy and live in fixer uppers until renovations were done, then sell for a profit after the capital gain tax was no longer in effect.

So, I’ve lived in 10 different residences, nothing newer than 1968. My first house is now 110 years old, was a former bookie joint with a colorful history and I lived there alone for several years and never experienced anything weird there or anywhere else, except for the house I lived in from 8-16 years old.

It was a huge ranch house built in the 1950s, with half of the cellar being a one bedroom apartment with a private entrance and a bar and library. A pretty cool setup. I typically had friends over for sleepovers and we would use the vacant apartment to stay out of my parents hair, most would only stay once, maybe twice because they felt weirded out in the apartment and I would always go to their place after that.

It always felt like someone was right behind you or just out of eyesight watching you. I always avoided being anywhere downstairs unless all the lights were on or someone else was in the room with me. It was just this heavy, uneasy feeling that I have never experienced elsewhere 25 years since.

Other weird experiences there was the night the doorbell rang in the middle of the night and all the pictures fell off the walls in the hallway, and another time everyone in the house awoke at once when we all heard someone running down the same hallway.

We kept in touch with the neighbors next door, and the house has had several different owners since the late 1990s. But they said a few of them asked about the history of the house because of unexplained phenomenon.

My parents current home abuts the property of the place and they have yet to ask the couple the bought it about it. I hope to hear that they feel the same way.”

3. Unsettling.

“When I was 13, I couldn’t sleep one night so I went into my mom’s room to sleep on this loveseat she had. On the ceiling directly above the loveseat was a wooden door to the attic.

I had been lying there for about 10 minutes when I got this really eerie feeling. I looked up to the attic door and I sh*t you not, it was being lifted up from the inside. I repeat, LIFTED UP BY SOMETHING ON THE INSIDE OF THE ATTIC.

Immediately, my 13-year old self shut her eyes. When I opened them, everything was back to normal. I’ve always chalked it up to sleep deprivation, but I don’t really know.

There’s a bunch of other stuff that happened, too. When my sister was one, she would stare at the top of the stairwell and laugh at absolutely nothing. She did this almost 4 times a day. My little ankle biting dog would stand at the edge of my bed, stare at my doorway, and growl for minutes at a time.

One of the showers would turn on at random times during the day. Keep in mind this was an old shower, you had to use a pretty good amount of force to get it to turn on. I would hear footsteps and doors opening and closing when I was alone at home.

Easily the most unsettling experience, though, happened when I was 17. I was just about to fall asleep when I heard a loud voice right in my ear say “HEY!”

Needless to say, I didn’t sleep that night.”

4. Didn’t feel right…

“Growing up I lived in a small house that was built in the 1920’s as a cabin. I NEVER felt right in that house.

I always felt like something was watching me growing up. Something bad. I only felt safer when I was outside. The last time I was alone in that house I was in my 20’s, living away from home but had came back for the day to take care of my parents dogs while they were out of town.

It was night, I only had one light on in the living room where I was and I was petting the two dogs. I was just sitting on the couch, no tv on or anything, just silence. All of a sudden, the dogs turned, looked at each other like they were silently communicating.

One dog walked over and sat in front of my old bedroom door, the other dog stepped in front on me and sat. Everything started crashing around in that room. Its like they were trying to protect me and I took them and ran out. Years later I was told by a medium that my step dad had a demon inside of him.

It would make sense considering his horrible behavior growing up and the other freaky things that happened in the house. Something was there.”

5. This old house.

“My house is around 140 years old.

A couple years ago I was sitting in my room at midnight, reading. I heard footsteps in the hall which I thought were my mom’e. My door was closed and my lights were off (I was reading on my phone) and suddenly the door opened and the lights turned on, but nobody was there and I noticed that my mother was still downstairs because I could hear her talking.

Then I heard my keyboard start having keys pressed but couldn’t see anything. I checked on my monitor a few minutes later and nothing had changed.

That’s the only paranormal experience I’ve had.”

6. Peacefully coexisting.

“I live in a house from 1926, when we dug our pool in the backyard we found the almost fully decomposed head (yes just the head…) of a horse.

That’s not the haunted part just the “this place has more history to it than meets the eye” moment. When my grandma died when I was 14 I decided to try and contact her, for whatever reason. Searched up a yes and no thingy online using a candle.

Didn’t think much of it, whatever I asked didn’t really get answered. Just as I decided to call it quits, the candle spun around and died out, shortly after that a gust of icy wind swept through my living room (has made sure all doors and windows were shut, no ac no source of outside air).

I thought that was weird, opened all the doors to let some warm summer air in. Went back to clean the candle away. Just as I reached for it I thought to myself “what if that was grandma”. Same instant, the landline rings exactly three times. I walk up to get it but the line goes dead after the third ringing.

Usually the phone blinks when someone called and you missed it. But then and there, Nothing. Looked into the missed calls history only to find the last call being four hours ago. I put the phone down with shivers running down my spine, turn around to see all three of my cats sprint out through the door.

They sat outside looking back in the house as if they had been scared by something, wide eyes bushy fur and wouldn’t be moved back inside, clawing at me if I tried to take them inside (until this day they are the sweetest things, wouldn’t bite or scratch or hiss at me). Took me hours later to get them back.

I’m pretty sure my house is haunted by some spirit, but I’m not scared of it anymore. It’s not malevolent and especially when I’m alone at home for multiple days I just kind of converse with it.

For example, was going to bed one night and the bathroom lights flickered ever so slightly. I said “if there’s a spirit here, I will count down from 3 and then you’ll flicker the light”. Sure enough, when I got to 0 and pointed at one light, jt flickered.

Thought it was pretty cool, but it wouldn’t stop. I told it to stop the bullsh*t and it did. Now we just peacefully coexist.”

7. Lightning strike.

“I had one really weird experience, there’s a massive sliding glass door that plainly shows the lake nearby and the balcony where I was sleeping and I couldn’t sleep that night because the thunder was really loud, so I started staring out on the balcony.

And I could’ve sworn there was a figure standing out there on the balcony, then lightning struck somewhere nearby and there was enough light for me to go “Holy sh*t there is something out there!”

And I turn the other way, nothing else really creepy has happened to me though, other people living in that house are another story entirely.”

8. It happened one night.

“I remember one night specifically.

I was in second grade and my room was small and also we’re the entrance to the attic was (never was able to open it no matter how hard we tried.) It was about 1:30ish and I some up so I can go to the bathroom. My bed was next to the wall on one side but next to my bed on the other side was the door which was a sliding door and had a gap on the bottom to see light.

I swing my feet over to get sit up but instead of the floor, I hit the wall. Not thinking much of it and believing I was on the opposite end of the bed I kick to the other side and again my feet hit a wall. At this point, I was starting to panic but not enough to where I still had since to try both ends of the bed and again. Walls.

Once I realize this I look at my hand and try to adjust my sight but nothing it is picked black to the point where I can’t even see my hands. I start kicking at the walls and screaming and crying. Even with as much noise as I was making no one came to get me as no one heard me. I was like this for what felt like hours until.

Finally. I see the light under my door and am able to escape. I get out and go to the bathroom with tears still running down my face. In later years I told my mom about it and she said that she never heard me make any noise at all. I’m 20 almost 21 now and I still remember to this day.

And just as a fact no, I’m still not and have never been claustrophobic.”

9. That’s spooky.

“My old childhood house was haunted.

It was built over an old wheat field and according to the neighbors, some local children would walk into the field and never come out.

I never saw anything, but according to my mom, she would see random children running through the house at night.”

10. The man made of shadows.

“My first house I bought at 23, there was a man made of shadows who lived in the corners of the rooms.

He never faced the room – he faced the wall. I started have intense sleep paralysis several times a night when I moved there – I never had that before that house, and never had it after I left either. I lived there 6 years and basically finally just fled. I only went back for the last of my stuff because my mom made me.

While I lived there, the neighbors acted all weird. The lady across the street thought I was the caretaker for some old woman. I lived alone. I told her so. She called me a liar because they could all see the old woman sitting in the big front window watching them and such, glaring. She was supposedly a grouchy old woman who never waved back, and always glared and looked angry.

That neighbor spread some BS small town gossip about me being mentally handicapped. Another neighbor told everyone that I didn’t actually buy the house, my dad did, and I lived there – again – with the old woman because I wasn’t capable of living alone. Like I lied about the woman to cover my mental handicap?

IDEK. I never, ever, ever saw this supposed old woman. I never thought there was anything in that house with me but the shadow man, and he was in different rooms than the one the neighbors said the lady sat in.

When I finally fled that house, I moved to Cleveland. I got a really nice apartment on the lake. It was golden. I made friends with the lady in the apartment next door. She asked me one day who stays at my apartment when I’m at work. I was like no one, wut? I live alone.

No one but me has keys. It’s an old building and me and the lady share a bathroom vent so she said no, there is someone walking around my apartment during the day when I’m at work. It’s clear as day – she can see my room lights through that shared vent, and there’s no soundproofing in a building that old. She swore for a year that there was someone walking around my apartment when I was at work. I figured she was just hearing things.

I moved again to a townhouse down the street. This was on a corner of the street, and across the street was another townhouse. Neighbors and I would wave back and forth from our porches or dining room windows. It was really close, we were all really friendly. One day, the lady in that other townhouse asked me how my mother is doing.

I was like WTF, fine? (She lives an hour away, and only visited my apartment once for like 30 minutes. We don’t get together much.) Then my neighbor proceeds to tell me about how when “we” first moved in (I live ALONE, ya’ll), they all thought we were b*tches because my “mom” was so unfriendly.

Sat in the dining room window all day glaring, wouldn’t wave back at them when they walked outside or past her on the sidewalk – like right under the window, mind – they could tap the window as they walked by, like right by her nose where she sat, they were that close.

I tried to explain that I live alone. Neighbor didn’t believe me. So I dragged her into my place and demanded to know where this second person was sleeping. Where her things were. Where SHE was. Etc.

Neighbor never came into my home again after that, but she and her husband would mention offhand now and then that the old lady “mom” was still in my place, they saw her that morning, etc.

I bought my next house two years later and moved about a mile away. I’d been there a week when my new neighbor knocked on my door (it was snowing) and asked if I knew the old lady in the driveway between our houses. I was like wut?

He said that there was an old lady in the driveway between our houses a few minutes ago, and it was snowing, and they thought she must live with me, like my senile mom or something. They were about to call the cops, but wanted to check first in case she just wandered outside. I told them to call the cops, because I live alone.

That was the last time anyone ever saw her. My actual mom visited a few days later, I told her the story, and she went around my house shouting at the “old lady” to leave me alone.

Like, it was weird – my mom is not that kind of person, doesn’t believe in that kind of things, etc., but people have been telling me for years and multiple houses that the old woman lives with me. After my mom shouted all over the house, she seemed to be gone. It’s been 4 years since anyone saw her, and I’ve moved again.

My current house is 202 years old, and quiet.”

11. The haunting.

“The house that I lived in last year was haunted.

I no longer live there and I am a lot more into cleansing and protection now, so I no longer experience any of this, which honestly makes it even weirder.

I lived in a 5 bedroom house with 4 other people, my boyfriend, his cousin, my best friend and her boyfriend. We started realizing immediately that the house was a bit off in terms of energy, but we always put it up to the fact that this many people living together can do that to an environment.

Me and my best friend were the first ones to start experiencing things. Cupboards would be wide open in the mornings, drawers too. A kite on our wall would blow around randomly. We’d see shadows in the corner of our eye constantly. We’ve heard huge bangs on the walls and something even strummed a string on my boyfriends guitar in the middle of the night.

My boyfriend and I were also very active sleep talkers at the time. I would record us every night on a sleep recording app so we could listen again later. We would always act super disoriented and confused, like we were learning how to speak words again. It was really weird and I still have all the recordings.

My best friend and I put two and two together that there were 2 main spirits in the house. Both male, they tend to stay in different areas of the house. The more malicious one was upstairs while the more playful one was in the kitchen.

But we do think that we heard the two spirits conversing a few nights before moving out. It was just my best friend and I and we were home alone. We heard two male voices approach the door and chat with each other. My dog was barking up a storm and freaking out. We waited about 5 minutes until we opened the door to see who it was, thinking it was my boyfriend and a friend of his.

There was nobody outside our door, not even our motion sensor light was on. We had heard the voices right before opening the door. My boyfriend was a 20 minute drive away, and it was 2 in the morning. Edit: I wanna add that ever since we moved, I’ve been sleeping with selenite and tourmaline by our bedside.

We rarely , if ever, sleep talk now. Not sure what to do with that information…”

People Who Work at Night Discuss the Paranormal Activity They’ve Experienced on the Job

I don’t think I could work the night shift at a business…at least not alone…

There’s too many things that could go wrong…and I’ve seen way too many horror movies to be able to relax.

And I legitimately think it would be terrifying to work in a place like a gas station or a convenience store overnight. No thank you!

But a lot of people do work nights…and they’ve seen some stuff.

Let’s get spooky with some stories from AskReddit users.

1. At the 7-11.

“I worked at a 7/11. One night I kept hearing what sounded like a little girl crying, but the store was completely empty.

Whenever I’d go the the area where I thought it was coming from, I’d hear it from somewhere else.

I hope somebody was messing with me but I’m not sure…”

2. The scene of the crime.

“A lab building where I once worked was the site of a murder-suicide (which happened while I was there! Awful and sad).

We didn’t have “shifts” per se, but I had to work late one night autoclaving equipment for the next day’s experiment. The autoclave room is right next to the lab where the event took place. I hadn’t seen anyone else in the building. After I started the load, I was about to leave the room when I heard a crash outside.

I immediately opened the door and saw that all the contents of a table in the hallway had been pushed to the floor. Water bottles, a packet of papers, pens, etc.

Since I was right by the door at the time, I would have seen and/or heard someone running away. It was against protocol to leave things in the autoclave overnight, so I had to stay an hour and a half to get them out, but nothing else happened. I left the stuff on the floor, though.

Didn’t want a repeat of that!”

3. In the barracks.

“Night watch in the barracks at Ft Gordon. That’s a night shift, right?

Anyway, so many things happened in 3 different rooms that I could write a book. It completely changed my believe in paranormal activity. This one took place in the middle of the night so this is the one I’ll tell.

I’m sitting by the stairwell on the 2nd floor and hear someone shouting in a room down a hallway. I’m on duty so I run to the room and swing open the door expecting to see some fighting.

There are several people in this room pointing up to the ceiling next to a wall and telling me, “They’re doing it again!” I ask them to explain and they tell me that ever since they moved into that room someone lifts up the ceiling tiles and makes funny faces at them at night.

The latrine is on the other side of the wall so I go over to see if anyone is there and there isn’t. So I climb onto a desk in the room to lift up the ceiling tiles to see if they’re still up there. When I lift up the ceiling tiles all I see is a cinder block wall that goes all the way to the floor above.

There’s only about an inch between the back of the ceiling tile and the wall. No way a face was there. 2 of the soldiers freaked out and ran out of the room and slept in the hallway.

This was only the first of many incidents.”

4. At the movie theater.

“Worked at a movie theater running the booths upstairs. The projectors are upstairs (obviously) in a long corridor.

At night, after the last showing in each theater, you shut off the lights to that theater and the small one over the projector itself. Then you cover the platters to protect from dust.

It’s not so bad the first few, because at least the lights of nearby projectors are still on for the theaters that are still running.

But…as you shut each one off one by one, the corridor gets darker and darker and that little viewing window into each individual theater is pitch black.

That dull, steady whirring noise you’ve toned out all night is gone and is now replaced by absolute silence and there’s hardly any light left anymore. Just the lights at the end of each corridor where you sit in between each start time.

It’s spooky enough is what I’m saying.

But one particular night, I’m throwing the covers over one of the platters and I casually glance up into the viewing theater window across the way.

And there’s a face. It’s a little boys face and it’s sheet white.

I know what I saw. I’m sure there’s an explanation for it and there’s nothing supernatural about it, but there WAS a face there and it scared the absolute sh*t out of me. It made an already unsettling environment that much more terrifying the rest of the time I worked there.

Also for the record, inside the actual theater, these windows are a solid 8-10 feet above the seatbacks in the highest row. So, if someone was playing a prank, they’d need a ladder and even then they’d have nowhere to set it.”

5. Holy moly…

“I work the front gate at a military installation. I noticed this dark green old Ford Bronco that would roll up.

When I would stand out the gate shack, the car would do a 180 and leave. This happened 3 times until I finally caught the license plate. I ran the numbers to my supervisor. He asked me if I was sure. I said I’m 100% certain.

He tells me it couldn’t be because the numbers are from a vehicle crash report that involved THE EXACT SAME VEHICLE and plate number to which the driver had died and the vehicle and the vehicle was totaled.

That made me want to switch to days.”

6. In the kitchen.

“Used to work at IHOP. A cook before my time got shot and died during robbery.

I would always hear someone in the kitchen such as the spatulas clanking but nobody would be in the kitchen. Once I saw black figure in the back figured it was the cook, when I went outside to the front of the restaurant, the cook was sitting outside smoking. There was no current orders either.

Other coworkers experienced some stories. One of them said she felt pushed but I can’t speak on what I didn’t see.”

7. Down in the mine.

“I worked in a mine in Northern Ontario.

There was a death on the 4200 level a couple years previous to the incident. It was a normal day underground like any other. We were rehabbing a old working that had collapsed. 4200 level was big, the drifts were 6×6 feet, but go on for kilometers in every direction.

It was about midnight when we saw the mine rescue team with security rushing down the drift. Naturally we dropped what we were doing and followed to see if we could help. We arrived to a guy who was as pale as a ghost, he didn’t look hurt, but he was shaking uncontrollably.

Mine rescue approached him and he wouldn’t have it. He would scream, and not just any scream, It was terrifying hearing the screams, like a person so consumed with fear, it had a tone to it that you wouldn’t imagin could come from a person.

Eventually he just stopped screaming and just sat there, awake but non responsive. By now it was 3:30 am and our shift was over. We couldn’t leave him down there. We managed to get him on a stretcher that we could carrie out. On our way out he kept saying “the devil is on 42.” Over and over again.

About two years later, another incident report was read to us, the exact same thing, exactly the same spot, but a different person.

I don’t believe they saw the devil, but it is always in the back of my mind when I’m on 42.”

8. Ugh. Get out of there.

“When a patient buzzed and asked me to ” ask the person behind the curtain to go away “.

Fyi it was dark and everyone was in their beds.”

9. Ghost car.

“I was working at a gas station at like 3 AM one night.

A car pulled in to the pump, guy got out and started pumping, and then the car and dude just…vanished. I was looking right at it, and it just popped out of existence.

I told my boss the next day and she turned white as a sheet. She’d seen the same thing, same exact description, same car, same pump, same guy.”

10. Hotels are just plain scary.

“I worked night shift at a hotel. I also had a day job and the manager was cool and said I could sleep as long as I woke up if someone needed something.

One night, I woke up and saw a guy… Well, more of a silhouette of a guy… Staring at me through the windows of the Dutch door to the courtyard. He was really tall (6.5 ft?) And had a black duster/trenchcoat and hat.

I jumped up from the couch, put down the remote I had fallen asleep with in my hand and rushed to the door to see what he needed.

He was gone. And no sign of him anywhere in the courtyard and there were only two long, straight paths. He couldn’t even have ran that fast.

I forget about it and continue my night.

Fast forward about three weeks and my coworker is telling me about an “evil spirit” that lives in one of the rooms (all the employees knew there were at least 4 haunted rooms there, as well as the elevator. No, seriously). He started describing a tall shadowy guy. I cut him off and say “like 6 or 7 feet? Black coat and hat?” He turns white and stares at me. “You’ve seen it too?!”

I tell him what happened. And that innocent incident that night all of a sudden got super creepy.

Another time, at another job… I was getting ready to do security rounds. Roughly around 3:15am. I am whistling the Arthur movie theme song (it had just played on the radio). It was dead quiet except just crickets.

As I open the door to the patrol car, still whistling, I hear a whistle off in the bushes (the bushes on a 60ft cliff). It’s the same tune. In the same type of whistle I have (I don’t whistle normal. It’s like a “windier, not sharp kind of whistle, and much quieter). Same exact song. Same exact type of whistle.

I immediately stop. The whistling keeps going. I get into the car and book it. Take about 20 minutes longer than I normally do to get back and am super careful/nervous/paranoid when I get back.

Never saw anyone or anything. Never heard it again.

But on that note… Sometimes if I fell asleep at that job, I’d wake up to the sound of my old boss shouting my name. He used to come in about the same time that I would hear the sound and wake up. That happened pretty regularly.

The weird thing is that he had been dead for three years when it started.”

11. Bill.

“I was firmly against the idea of paranormal activity prior to working in an old folks home.

You always felt watched. Always. Even when not in view of the camera. But that was the tip of the iceberg. Several times while I was working, things would fly off the walls even though it was unprovoked.

I’m talking hand sanitizer containers that flew fifteen feet from the wall it was on, cups that were stationary on the counter and all of a sudden flew across the room, and clipboards that just happened to all fall off the walls at once, even though they were across the room from each other.

Nothing is as unsettling as Bill in 209. Bill lived in this room while he was a tenant. While someone was visiting, they stayed in room 209. The visitor came downstairs, said that Bill had come into his room, and said “don’t worry it’s just Bill!” while he was in the shower, and then asked who Bill was.

We explained that there was no one who lived or worked there named Bill. A couple days later, the same visitor was cleaning out records for the care center, where they worked. As they were doing so, they found that a resident named Bill had lived in room 209.

When they told us this story, we all heard a knock on the window and turned to look at it. As we did so, clipboards and bulletin boards flew off the wall on the opposite wall.

We’ve decided that Bill is friendly, but likes attention. He’s cool.”

12. No way I’d work there.

“While working at a psych ward, every morning at about 2 am there would be the sound of someone running down the main service hallway, followed by the same door at the end slamming.

One time I kept a close eye on the area but when I was distracted for a few seconds the footsteps began but when I got to the area there was nothing. According to one of the managers that had happened for several years, always at the same time every morning, and most believed it was a ghost of one of the deceased clients.

Another time, all the battery powered wall clocks in the unit spun around a few times simultaneously. That was freaky and everyone in the area screamed.”

13. At a recording studio…

“I used to intern in a recording studio in NYC years ago where it was technically open 24/7, meaning there was always someone there whether clients were in or not.

Anyway, it was on an upper floor of a building and due to the amount of expensive equipment inside, you could not access that floor by elevator without someone letting you up, the button for that floor was locked out so you couldn’t press it from inside the elevator.

There was a camera at the front entrance downstairs, another at the elevator entrance, and one inside the elevator, all of which could be viewed from the front desk of the studio so when people arrived you would buzz them in, wait until you saw them enter the elevator and then you would have to push the button for the studio floor to bring the elevator up.

Well anyway, one of the nights I was working the overnight shift and it was just me and another dude (doing cleaning, maintenance etc) when we hear the elevator start running at probably like 3:30 in the morning.

The whole building is all offices so really there is nobody in the building past 5-6pm besides us, so we thought it was a bit strange. The other guy looks at the cameras and there’s nothing at all, no-one in the elevator either.

So although it’s weird, we just figure someone must still be in the building and called it from a different floor. It made sense until all of a sudden we see it stop at our floor and we hear the door ding. We’re both in the lobby about 15 feet away from the elevator and we give each other the hardest “WTF” stare ever.

I can’t explain how much I didn’t want those doors to open. We stare like a deer in headlights completely motionless at the doors as they open. Nobody is there, no-one pushed the button, nothing.

We both keep staring completely still and silent and it becomes really f*cking creepy as time goes on and the doors don’t shut, as if something is standing in doorway blocking the sensor. The doors usually close after 5 seconds or so, but we stared at it for a good 20-30 seconds or so before they closed and the elevator returned back to the lobby.

We stared for a bit longer before simultaneously looking at each other and saying “what the f*ck dude!?” The next day we ask a couple of the other guys about it and one of the guys said the same thing happened to him in the middle of the night when he was by himself, he said he almost sh*t himself.

Maybe there’s a logical explanation for it (elevator malfunction, etc) but it was really damn freaky since the place was generally kinda creepy and night and there had been some other weird things.”

10 Ghost Tours That Will Seriously Give You the Creeps

I really, really love all things creepy. I’m talking about scary movies, scary books, scary everything.

If you like to dabble in scary tourism, this is just the list for you.

Today we take a look at 10 real-life, creepy tours recommended by the Buzzfeed community that are guaranteed to give you a good scare.

1. The Stanley Hotel – Estes Park, Colorado

“The Stanley Hotel (where The Shining was filmed) offers guided tours, and you can even spend the night in specific rooms that are reported to have ‘higher than usual activity.’ The guide said many people died building the hotel, and their ghosts will often come out to ensure guests are enjoying it.

While on the tour, one of the guides encouraged me to take a picture in this one dark hallway. When I had the film developed, there were two orbs, one on each side of me, clear as could be. So spooky.”

2. The Jennie Wade House – Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

“After taking pictures on the Jennie Wade House tour, a bunch of my friends and I had photos turn out really strangely— there were giant clouds and shadows in weird spots.

At one point, we also heard footsteps upstairs and thought it was the other tour group, but then we found out they were in the basement.

A chain that was blocking off a section began to swing in circles with nobody touching it — scary!”

3. Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum – Las Vegas, Nevada

“Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum is located in a mansion that the state of Nevada deemed haunted after they found a pentagram, human flesh, and streaks of blood in it in the ’70s.

It contains 30 rooms of artifacts from Zak’s personal collection, including an allegedly demonic chair that was used during the Ed and Lorraine Warren exorcisms!”

4. Jack the Ripper Tour – London, England

“Last Halloween, a few friends and I went on the Jack the Ripper guided tour in London. Our host was amazing — she took us on a walk to all the spots where the murders had happened and the victims were found. She had photos and went into a LOT of detail about the killings.

The night itself was freezing cold, which literally added to the chill of everything!”

5. The Waverly Hills Sanatorium – Louisville, Kentucky

“I did an overnight paranormal investigation at the Waverly Hills Sanatorium just for fun, not believing I’d experience anything paranormal. It was life-changing!

I saw and heard things that night that I never thought could happen. It was both terrifying and fascinating.

I’d do it again any day.”

6. Manly Quarantine Station – Sydney, Australia

“Q Station is by far the scariest tour ever!! There’s so much amazing history to the place, which has pitch black buildings, cold spots, and decontamination showers.

Oh, and a couple of jump scares thrown in for good measure!”

7. French Quarter Ghost & Legends Tour – New Orleans, Louisiana

“This tour in the French Quarter of New Orleans is such a fun and interesting tour of all of the crazy happenings down there. It is especially terrifying to go see the Lalaurie Mansion, home of serial killer Madame Lalaurie.

Nic Cage used to own the home but he would never spend the night because of what had happened in it!”

8. The Crescent Hotel – Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Its National Paranormal Day! ? So let's throw it back to 2012 when me and my uncle were into Ghost Hunting and he took us on a road trip from Missouri to the infamous Crescent Hotel located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Honestly, a really beautiful place with a chilling history. The Crescent Hotel is known to be one of the most haunted hotels in America. It was first a resort for the rich that became a hospital for cancer patients. Unfortunately, the "doctor" Norman Baker was running scams and likely performing dangerous experiments on the patients leading to their death. He was found to not have any medical training and was eventually arrested. When we went, we only caught a few orbs (seen in a few of the pics) on the haunted tour and my mom's arm got yanked while she was sleeping. Yes, we stayed overnight! What's crazy is that recently there has been an unearthing of jars filled with body parts. This discovery happened after the recent Ghost Adventures visit in February! Plus, they even have a cat ghost!!!”

“The Sorrel-Weed House Tour is all fun and games until you descend into the basement.

It’s hands down the creepiest place I’ve ever set foot in. I just couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being watched.”

10. The Joshua Ward House Tour – Salem, Massachusetts

“When I went on a tour of the Joshua Ward House — which was once the home of a High Sheriff in the Salem Witch Trials — I was suddenly overwhelmed by a chilling feeling when I was standing by the basement.

The next day, a bruise in the shape of a bite mark from HUMAN TEETH showed up on my ankle!”

12 People Reveal the Strangest Paranormal Experience They’ve Ever Had

Some people believe in ghosts. Others claim they couldn’t possibly exist. And some don’t really seem to know what to think.

No matter where you fall on the scale of skepticism, there’s no doubt these 12 people’s stories will give you something to think about while you’re trying to fall asleep tonight.

#12. Close encounters

“My husband, parents and I were camping in the Missouri Ozarks. It was fall, around 10:30 at night and we were sitting around the campfire. A white ball of light ~ basketball sized ~ appeared suddenly in the distance off to our right. It traveled extremely fast along the ground through the trees and stopped in my husbands lap. It moved across him, me, my mom and dad over about 10 seconds before it sped off to our left over the horizon and was gone. There was no sound, no airplane noise, or cars around. We were by ourselves on about 200 acres of forest. My dad walked a ways in the direction it went but said he couldn’t see anything. Years later, I’m still scratching my head over what it was.”

#11. Still can’t explain it

“I may as well comment but unsure whether it’s paranormal.

Was about 13 years old, common for my mom to leave and spend the night at her friends house after a night out (split parents) and this was one of those night. She left, locked doors, put sister to bed (she was about 8-9) and proceeded to stay up until I fell asleep around 11 or 12.

Woke up to banging coming from the shed outside. From my bedroom window I can see out the back and peeked through the blinds. I assumed the sound was my golden retriever digging by the shed or something, but I peeked out and could see the dog standing still, staring towards the shed. Now this made me scared because I couldn’t see the shed from my window. I texted Mum to see if she had come home to no reply. Eventually I muster up the courage to get out of bed and look out the living room window at the shed (which had stopped banging). I was less nervous now because I assumed it was a possum that had got stuck in the shed through the window but had since got out. The weird part is when I ventured to the front of the house, where the front door was wide open along with the front windows and living room light was on. I know for a fact I had turned the lights off and locked the door. I then proceed to grab a knife and check on my sister while turning every light on in the house while searching for an intruder. Was scared shitless.

Can’t explain to this day.”

#10. Help from grandma

“My grandmother died when I was in Kindergarten but when I was little I remembered she would put wet washcloths on my cousins foreheads when they were teenagers and wouldn’t get out of bed. We used to all get a laugh out of it. One time in college I had an exam at 7:00 am and I am notorious for sleeping late on accident. Anyway the morning of my exam my alarm didn’t go off but I feel a really cold wet feeling on my forehead, like a wash cloth. It immediately woke me up and I saw my grandmother standing over me telling me I needed to get up and out of bed. I looked at my alarm and it was *6:45. I still made it to the exam.”

#9. Family visits

“I was 4 or 5 and had a dream about this guy with a hole in his throat in my bedroom. He told me not to be scared and I told him I wasn’t. He said he just wanted to ask questions about the family, how everyone was doing and I told him, then I woke up.

I told my grandmother about the dream and she turned white. Got out a photo album. I saw his picture and went “That’s him! But why did he have a hole in his throat?”

It was my great grandfather who died two years before I was born. He had had a tracheotomy due to throat cancer.”

#8. Sliding doors

“I was home alone. Around the age of 16 and I had a dog. She is super super calm and only barked when something scared her. She was upstairs barking like crazy. Naturally I got scared. So I got out of the washroom, left the light on and the door open, walked up stairs to my dog and saw she was barking at nothing. Still a little spooked I grabbed a metal base ball bat that I had in my room. After grabbing it I go back to my dog and she just stares at me. Very intensely and quickly she looks at the stairs. When she does that I hear very loud footsteps from the floor below. I slowly and quietly make my way down the stairs but I pause about half way down. While walking I immediately noticed the bathroom door, that I left open, was closed.

The light was also off. Because of the style of door knob, I could also tell that the door was locked. This door also could be unlocked of a key incase of emergency (elderly grandparents used to live with us). I grabbed the key and unlocked the door. Nobody. Not a surprise though. Almost immediately after opening the door I hear very loud and aggressive footsteps now coming from upstairs. I decide to go back upstairs to the room my dog was in (my sisters room) and check on her. When I get back up there I decide its probably the best time to nope the fuck out of there. But I didn’t. The room that my dog is in has the lights on door closed and door locked. Good thing I know how to pick locks because we lost the key to that room years ago. So yea there was no one in there but fuck some ghost fucking locked some doors in my house.”

#7. Sleeping issues

“As a kid I always had trouble sleeping. Even in kindergarten I would never nap during the day, and the teachers would separate me from the other kids during nap time, as I kept them awake.

Even in the middle of the night, I would wake up, and I just couldn’t go back to sleep, no matter how hard I tried. As I started to grow older, I just accepted it, so I just would end up watching TV until the rest of the house woke up.

Around 1st or 2nd grade, I remember I woke up one night and my mom was just sitting on the floor beside my bed, resting her back on my nightstand. I remember asking her why she was there, and she told me that she was keeping an eye on me cause I was sick, and then told me to go back to sleep. So I went back to sleep.

This went on for about a week, until one day I decided to question her about it. She said that she had no idea about what I was talking about, and that she never stood by my bed all this time.

That night, I woke up again, sure enough, my “mom” was there comforting me and telling me to go back to sleep. I told her that she wasn’t real, but she kept insisting that she was. So I just tried to touch her, and that’s when she disappeared.

She started to appear less and less, and she would go away when I tried to touch her. After a while, it got to a point that when I woke up in the middle of the night, I would just swat the air near my nightstand and then go back to sleep without even opening my eyes. And then “she” went away and never appeared again.

I think about it often and I have no explanation for this. It definitely sounds like something that would happen to a schizophrenic, but I am a fully functioning adult, with no mental health issues with a steady income, and currently working on getting my masters degree.

I have not gotten any sort of hallucinations ever since this incident, but I still have trouble sleeping. I never sleep during the day, as it disorients me, and when it becomes nighttime, I basically don’t lay down until I am so tired that I just pass out as soon as my head touches the pillow.”

#6. Hard to keep the help

“Geez, where to start…

I lived in a three bedroom apartment with some roommates while I was stationed in Gaeta, Italy (Navy). There was a poltergeist that haunted all three floors that we named “Calvin”. Calvin liked to take things only to return them later, rattle dishes, throw people off of the couch, etc. One day I came home after standing the 4 AM to 8 AM watch and I was really tired. Calvin had been quiet for a while, but that day decided to start rattling plates in the kitchen just as I was starting to doze off. I just ignored him and tried to go to sleep and would have if he hadn’t walked across the bed -I could feel the mattress indent as he moved.

One day a friend was over at the apartment cleaning it while we were out to sea. She was washing the windows and had left the living room to get some clean water. When she came back it looked like someone had breathed on the glass to fog it over and the word “Calvin” was written on the fog. Needless to say she didn’t come back to the apartment.”

#5. Let me in

“My parents lived in a old house to awaken to a knocking on the window, when my dad pulled the curtain aside there was a thing. He was asking my dad to let him inside. He describes the thing as a human form but no facial features.

To top it off they had a friend staying with them later, the same thing was knocking and scratching on his window pleading to be let in.

Needless to say he wasnt let in. They left soon after that.”

#4. Scary Santa

“I was once at my grandmother’s for Christmas when I was about 11 or so. It was Christmas eve and I was sharing a room with my father, him being fast asleep and snoring on the bed opposite me. Throughout that age I had a lot of trouble getting to sleep, I was always a massive insomniac, and with my dad snoring away was basically just being kept wide awake.

At some point, long after everyone in the house had fallen asleep, while I was still wide awake, I was jolted into the most intense state of fear I think I have ever experienced.

From the three foot space behind me that separated my bed from the door, I shit you not, the most intensely gravelly and hoarse voice I’ve ever heard fucking announced to the room; “I’m Santa.”

It scraped through me and I just fucking froze. There was no transition between the before, during or after it spoke, as there would be from “waking up”, so I am still convinced that I had not somehow fallen asleep. I literally just lay there in complete terror, facing my dad as he continued to snore and refusing to turn around. I lay like that for ages, sweating buckets upon buckets into my bed sheets, and I guess eventually passed out. Woke up Christmas morning afraid and terrified, with a very clear memory of it all.”

#3. It even scared the dog

“A voice spooked the fuck out of me when I was 17.

Backstory, I was in what Americans would call high-school I guess (Finland, different system) in another town. I’d come home to my parents for the summers.

So, being 17 and having older friends, they were usually out at bars with my older brother so I couldn’t really join. But it was all good, my brother had a killer pc at the time and I just loved Borderlands. So, I spent the nights playing that, accompanied only by my dog who would sleep calmly on my bed behind me.

So, headset on, I was playing NG+ and was ready to go to Sledge as I feel a breath in my neck and hear a very audible whisper saying “What do you want?”

I freeze, afraid to turn. I gather my courage and take the headphones off and turn sharply ready to react to anyone who might be behind me.

But all I see is my dog, shivering and trembling, looking scared af with his tail between his legs. No bark, nothing, which was odd since he is a Jack Russell.

Still don’t know what it was. But it did fuck me up for a while.”

#2. Every theatre has its ghosts

“I work in this old ass theatre that was built as a vaudeville house in about 1900. I don’t even believe in ghosts but this damn place is haunted. Every theatre has its ghost, I know; I think they come free with the rigging setup. But those are out of tradition, and something to blame for whatever you misplaced. This place is different tho. Some parts were built on later, and those parts aren’t as bad. Nothing weird goes on in the scene shop or the offices. But the equipment stored under the stage moves, you always feel watched in the lighting booth, and once the fucker turned the light off on me when I was minding my own business in the bathroom of an original dressing room. I watched the switch flip. That little shit.

Edit: yes, I still don’t really believe in ghosts. But that almost did it.”

#1. This old house

“My house is old and constantly has weird things happen in it. One night my ex and I were fast asleep when someone or something banged on our bedroom door. I know it really happened because we both woke up. I quickly grabbed my gun out of my nightstand and flung the door open within like 5 seconds of this happening and no one was there. I ran throughout the entire house with my chest pounding fully expecting to find an intruder. All I found was my dogs asleep on the kitchen floor. They bark at everything and are very good guard dogs meaning that they heard nothing. I still cannot explain how this happened.”
