In 2017, a dog named Odin refused to leave his flock of goats behind during the California Tubbs Fire as his owners fled to safety. Days later, the owners came back to their property to find Odin survived and managed to keep all the goats alive.

Twitter Asked Elon Musk to Make a “Dog Mode” for Cars… And He Did Not Disappoint

Here’s something that all dog lovers can surely get behind: Tesla just rolled out a “dog mode” for their vehicles. When activated, it keeps the air conditioning running at a comfortable temperature for your pup and also lets anybody walking by your car know that your furry friend is doing just fine.

The idea actually came about from a person who tweeted at Tesla CEO Elon Musk last year.

Musk and Tesla responded and the results are pretty great.

This is how Tesla instructs owners to use “dog mode.”

“To enable Dog Mode, tap the fan icon at the bottom of the touchscreen when your car is parked. Set Keep Climate On to DOG, make adjustments within temperature limits, then leave knowing your pet will stay comfortable. Dog Mode will stay on after you leave your car. If you your battery reaches less than 20% charge, you will receive a notification on your mobile app.”

Tesla also recently announced its “sentry mode” that essentially protects your vehicle when you’re not around. External cameras on the car monitor its surroundings and if someone even leans against the vehicle “alert mode” is activated that warns a potential thief or vandal via the center screen that cameras are recording their movements.

If a window is broken and someone attempts to steal the vehicle, the alarm goes off, the car’s audio plays at maximum volume, and the owner is alerted through an app.

I think it’s safe to say we are now living in the future.

A Man Smuggled His Dog into the Hospital to See His Dying Wife and Now We’re All Crying

There’s a reason this story has been going viral on Reddit and other social media sites: it’s absolutely heartbreaking, yet incredibly sweet at the same time. It also goes to show just how incredible the bond us mere humans can be lucky enough to have with our precious dogs.

The Reddit user shared his personal story about his wife and dog, Bella.

Uggghhhh. The man’s dying wife wanted to see her dog one more time, so the husband decided to sneak the pooch into the hospital in a suitcase.

Seems like Bella knew she had to be quiet so she wouldn’t alert the hospital staff.

The dog made it into the hospital and got to say goodbye to his mama before she passed away a few days later.

Where are the tissues? This story calls for at least a whole box.

As has been said over and over, we don’t deserve dogs.

New Study Finds that Bigger Dogs Make Better Pets

Small dog owners beware: you may not lie to hear this.

Recently, a study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science sought to answer whether big or small dogs make better pets. The researchers examined a variety of criteria, including obedience, aggression, excitability, and anxiety.

Going into the study, they believed they would find that smaller dogs displayed less obedience and more of the negative behaviors like aggression and anxiety, and their findings supported their suspicions: bigger dogs do in fact make better, more laid-back pets.

However, that could be our own fault. Owners of small dogs reported treating them differently than their larger counterparts. They didn’t engage in as many training and play activities and also reported fewer uses of punishment and reward tools when training smaller dogs.

Owners who used positive reinforcement and reward-based training with smaller dogs saw an increase in obedience and a decrease in anxious and fear behaviors.

The paper concluded that owners of smaller dogs would do well to spend more time training and playing with their dogs and correcting unwanted behaviors with rewards, since punishments can reinforce fear and fear-related aggression.

So while it is true that small dogs tend to be more anxious and prone to aggressive fear responses than their larger counterparts, it’s at least partly because people are more likely to treat them like babies and not animals. If you have a small dog, it’s important to remember that it needs to be played with and trained like any other canine, and that the responsibility is yours to reinforce behaviors positively to soothe their natural anxieties.

In 2005 scientists placed dogs in suspended animation and brought them back to life. First they drained their blood and replaced it with a low-temperature solution. After three hours of clinical death, the dogs’ blood was returned and their hearts were shocked, and the dogs came back to life.

The Latest in the Fight Against School Shooters? Trained Dogs

Given the lack of action we’ve seen in the face of school shootings becoming an epidemic in our country, educators have been forced to get creative and come up with their own solutions to keep our children safe. There’s ALICE trainingRun Hide Fight, and even an extremely controversial idea of arming teachers. Amongst all these ideas, nothing seems to have really taken hold.

Maybe keeping trained attack dogs in schools – not exactly a new idea, but one that seems to be gaining traction – will be different.

Real Deal Dog Training in Norco, CA, and Active Shooter K9 in Chariton, IA, are two of the companies working to train dogs.

James Greco, the head trainer for Long Island K-9, told the New York Times that “the best trained dogs have an accuracy rate of 85 to 90 percent. This sniffing ability means K-9s could help detect the tens of thousands of guns that are brought to school by students across the country each year.”

To be clear, the idea is that having trained dogs in schools could help prevent a shooting before it starts because the dogs will (hopefully) be able sniff out guns and ammo on students. It is not so much that the dogs will be able to stop a shooter who is already on the loose (although, maybe it could happen that way).

If they are successful, these dogs could mean the difference between happily boring, repetitive days at school and the nightmare that too many American kids have already experienced first-hand in recent years. At the very least, taking this step, in addition to others, could help parents and educators feel as if they’re doing something useful to prevent the loss of their children.

In this day, when so much is so scary and uncertain, simply feeling less impotent is worth a lot.

This IKEA Store Is Opening Its Doors to Give Stray Dogs a Warm Place to Sleep

As Old Man Winter tightens his icy grip around the world, one IKEA store in Italy has decided to go above and beyond in considering the plight of our furry friends during this time.

The store, located in Catania, Italy, has been letting stray dogs relax and sleep in the warm comfort of the store, giving them a crucial chance to survive winter by avoiding frigid overnight temperatures.

An IKEA customer who happened upon a group of dogs snoozing near a living room display said, “My reaction was pure amazement. It’s not a common thing.”

The dogs are also fed at the store, and some have even been adopted by IKEA customers who just couldn’t resist those adorable puppy dog eyes.

Another customer said, “I felt a feeling of deep tenderness and great happiness in seeing dogs crouched in the exhibition space at the entrance of the IKEA. If all the stores that had the space would make a place of refuge for strays, I would be really happy.”

Here’s a couple more photos because you know you need this.

Stephen King’s Greatest Horror? His Corgi Molly, “The Thing of Evil”

Stephen King is the undisputed kind of horror. From the absolutely terrifying Pennywise the Clown in It to pretty much all of The Shining, his characters tend to stay with you well after you’ve already closed the book. In fact, when I was a kid, my mom just gave ne a verbal summary of the plot of It, and it scared me so much I was afraid of going near gutters for months!

Knowing that he’s the master of all things scary, we wondered, “What terrifies Stephen King?” The answer? His adorable corgi, Molly.

He’s dubbed his dog “The Thing of Evil” and recounts her adventures (and misadventures) on Twitter. Here are 15 of his most entertaining tweets about the evil that actually haunts his life.
