Memes for All the Tired Parents Out There Who Are Trying to Raise Boys

There’s been a lot of push back lately about the phrase “boys will be boys.”

Understandably, when it’s used in defense of inexcusable behavior on the part of men, especially in the realm of assault, etc, then it’s pretty repulsive.

But there’s another sense in which the term gets used – the sense in which I’d always thought of it. And that is that boys are just…kind of insane. Little boys especially. And they’re gonna do weird, goofy, chaotic stuff.

And at a certain point there’s nothing you can do but meme about it.

Memes for Everyone Who Needs a Break from Raising and Parenting Boys

When I was a kid, I was at the house of a couple of my best friends and we had a great idea.

There was this long, fairly steep staircase that went from the kitchen to the basement, see, and also, there was a sled in the garage.

Inpatient for the snows of winter, we grabbed the sled and started taking turns riding it down the stairs and crashing into makeshift piles of pillows to prevent us from hitting the concrete wall.

When discovered and told to stop immediately, I protested, as I hadn’t had enough turns.

Raising boys is wild. Here are some memes to prove it.

These People All Joyfully Take After Their Parents

When Charles Darwin was conducting research and piecing together the framework that would ultimately form the bedrock of evolutionary theory, he had one big problem on his hands.

He knew, like everyone did, that humans and animals alike passed traits on from parent to offspring. And he further knew – as fewer had noticed – that these traits give survival advantages and disadvantages in different environments, which ultimately turn little changes in the short term into huge morphs in the long-term.

But what he DIDN’T know what just HOW this was happening. “Genetics” wasn’t a term yet. We didn’t really get the mechanism for HOW we looked like our dad. We just kinda expected that to be the case, and thought it was a sort of magic.

And in a way, we were right. Sure, we’ve got a much better understanding now of genes and DNA and all that jazz, but it IS still a sort of magic to compare yourself to your parents. It’s a bond. And it’s one that these Redditors are reveling in.

A Genetically Rare Chimera Kitten Was Rescued in Tennessee

I had a cat who seemed like he had two different personalities when I was growing up.

Sometimes he was sweet and cuddly, and other times he had the devil in him.

But last March a kitten was found in Nashville, Tennessee that really was essentially two different cats fused into one.

A post shared by @kittenitwithkiki

Her name is Apricot, and though she hasn’t had a DNA test to prove it, her rescuers believe her to be what’s called a “chimera.”

Although “chimera” sounds more like a mythological monster than a sweet, cuddly, kitten, according to My Modern Met, Apricot is half tortoiseshell and half ginger tabby, while her brother is just an ordinary tortoiseshell.

She looks like two cats merged into one, and in fact, that’s exactly what she is. Apricot is a rare chimera cat, which means she was born with two sets of DNA. She’s the result of two embryos fusing together inside her mother’s womb. In other words, Apricot is technically two fraternal twins combined into one individual cat.

How amazing is that?

Apricot was rescued along with her brother, Pretzel, from inside the wall of a newly constructed home.

When the mama cat didn’t return for them, the family contacted the Nashville Cat Rescue, who quickly placed them with Kiki, a cat foster mom who also happened to have two nursing females perfect for Apricot and Pretzel.

Kiki fosters lots of cats, but she had never seen one quite like Apricot.

Even so, the kittens were made to feel right at home.

The goal of Kiki and her partners at Nashville Cat Rescue is to stop the cycle of feral cats having litter after litter that need more and more homes to take care of them.

She cares for the cats (and some dogs, too!) until homes can be found, ensuring that the adult cats are spayed before they leave foster care.

The end goal for Kiki is to find good homes to adopt the kitties, and that’s exactly what she did for Apricot and Pretzel.

They stayed with Kiki and their furry foster family for a little over two months before being adopted out to their forever home at the end of May.

And if you’re heart broken that you didn’t get to be the one to adopt them–you can still buy a mug of the unique kitty, with proceeds going to support the continued care of all her feline friends.

Family takes “If I Fits, I Sits” to a Whole New Level With Their Cat

When I was a kid I really liked the idea of tiny rooms. Sure, I had a normal sized bedroom. But inside my closet, there was a tiny door.

Where did it lead? (I don’t know. I think it was locked and led to the pipes.)

And even though I had a room of my own, I longed to have a tiny secret room that no one could go in but me.

Turns out, maybe cats feel the same way. It’s a proven fact that cats like containers.

There’s a reason why “If I fits, I sits,” has become a slogan for cat lovers everywhere.

Even big cats aren’t immune.

And we all know how they feel about boxes.

But could it be that all this sitting in tight places is because secretly, cats want tiny bedrooms of their own?

One family recently found out.

After adopting a tuxedo kitty called Wyatt from a shelter, Bryan Davies really wanted to make the cat feel at home.

His bedroom had a sort of secret, unused cupboard and so Bryan renovated it for his feline friend, complete with cat-sized furniture and pictures on the wall.

It’s the perfect, cozy little container for a cat.

And because Wyatt was an avid birdwatcher, they completed the setup with a wall-mounted tablet for watching YouTube videos of birds and other wildlife.

What a cushy pad!

As Bryan told The Dodo:

“He spends a lot of time in there, asking to watch his show before taking a nap.

He zones out to the screen like a normal teen. And he naps — hard.

He really does enjoy it as much as a kid who finally got his own room.”

It kind of reminds me of a favorite childhood story, the Little Golden Book Home for a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown.

Not only does Wyatt have a nice little room, but he loves boxes like any cat, and his room has a good deal of symmetry going on.

That’s interesting because, according to a recent study, it’s not just containers that cats love.

Ever wonder why they also want to lie down on your laptop, keyboard, notepad, or book?

Apparently it’s not just to irritate you.

According to this new study, squares and rectangles, the actual shapes are what often attract cats.

The researchers found that cats will actually sit inside an optical illusion of a square, because they like squares so much.

It’s fascinating! No wonder Wyatt loves his little room with its little bed and TV.

What do you think about all this? Does your pet need their own bedroom too? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

These Cuddly Pups Remind Us Why Dogs Are Man’s Best Friend

When I was young, I was terrified of dogs.

No one really knows why. Maybe because the whole neighborhood had Labradors who would chase me and knock me down.

They thought we were playing. I thought I was dinner.

Eventually, because my sister wanted one, I agreed that we could get a dog if it was a little one, and we soon welcomed a terrier pup into the family.

Now, as an adult, I love doggos. (I still don’t love Labs though. Sorry most popular breed on the planet.)

There’s just nothing quite like a dog to bring a smile to your face.

Cat Parents Show the Many Personalities of the Feline

My family had two cats when I was growing up, and while I don’t love cleaning the litter box, I love the way they purr. Life isn’t really suitable for a cat at the moment, but lately, I find myself wishing I had one. They’re so soft, standoffish, and adorable.

Our neighbor’s cat comes to visit us sometimes. He used to do his business in a planter in our garden. When we had to get rid of the planter (aka his toilet), he waited on the front porch for us to come home from work, just so he could give us the evil eye. I want to adopt him.

Cats are incredible.

Dachshunds Went Viral for “Helping” To Save the Suez Canal

I really love a good dog story.

Crusoe the Dachshund is no stranger to the camera.

A spunky little dog who, like many dachshunds, suffers from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), he and his canine siblings, Oakley and Daphne, are internet-famous across multiple platforms, and where they recently went viral because of one of their adventures.

The three doxxies make lots of videos, which can be found under their Instagram handle @crusoe_dachshund.

The pups often play dress-up in their videos, like this one where they posed as a zebra, a lion, and a monkey for Earth Day this year:

And donned their favorite Star Wars costumes on May the 4th:

These intrepid little dachshunds just like to have a good time, whether it’s filming a makeup tutorial:

Or a mock ad for a jewelry store:

And they are no strangers to the art of the green screen!

So when that massive container ship got stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking more than 400 other vessels for several days, their fans knew just who to call to dig it out.

Originally posted on TikTok, with a slightly longer version available on YouTube, these little diggers did what dachshunds do best.

When he’s not busy posing for the camera, Crusoe also acts as the CEO for the company DoggoRamps, which was founded by his owner Ryan Beauchesne.

According to their website, the company was started when little Crusoe underwent surgery on his back in 2016.

Crusoe loves to spend time with us on the bed and couch, and I still wanted him to be able to do that without always worrying he might jump off.

So, through much trial and error and many iterations, I finally designed the original small dog bed ramp, which I used for Crusoe for a couple years before even bringing it to market.

Nowadays Crusoe is doing just fine. (He did help dig out that container ship after all. Ahem.)

And the ramp that Ryan invented for him has helped over 10,000 other dogs and their families.

How’s that for a good-boy story? Let us know what you think of Crusoe in the comments.

These Border Collies Replant a Burned Chilean Forest

Herding dogs are smart and high energy.

When we first met ours at a rescue shelter, she was so excited she raced around the yard in circles like a cartoon Tasmanian devil.

That combination of energy and intelligence makes Border Collies the perfect breed for a very special and unexpected environmental task.

Meet Das, Olivia, and Summer:

They live in Chile, where in 2017, fores fires decimated the landscape.

TreeHugger.com described the fires in El Maule in stark terms:

The worst wildfire season in Chile’s history ravaged more than 1.4 million acres early in 2017, destroying nearly 1,500 homes and killing at least 11 people. More than a dozen countries sent fire-fighting specialists to help battle the dozens of destructive blazes.

According to Green Matters, the damage was estimated at $333 million, but the loss of trees and their impact on the environment as a whole is likely immeasurable.

It will take decades to regrow the forest land–but first, new trees must be planted.

Enter sisters Francisca and Constanza Torres and their three Border Collies:

Together, they train the dogs to race across the forest floor wearing backpacks full of native seeds, which they purchase with their own money.

As the sheepdogs run, the seeds spill from holes in their special doggy bags, and spread out where they can begin to take root and regrow the once-lush environment.

It may seem like work to humans, but for the dogs, it’s just a raucous good time.

In an email exchange with Mother Nature Network, Francisca explained:

“They reeeeeally love [it]!! It’s a country trip, where they can run as fast as they can and have a great time.”

And when their bags are empty, the dogs return to their owners for treats and cuddles, and a refill on the seeds.

It’s quite the sight, to see the dogs bounding through the scrub.

And it’s a good thing they have so much energy. According to Green Matters:

This system is also more efficient than having people spread the seeds manually. These speedy canines can race through a forest and cover up to 18 miles a day. Humans, on the other hand, can only cover a few miles each day. These pups can scatter over 20 pounds of seeds, depending on the terrain.

Johnny Appleseed, watch out!

They may not be able to cover the entire forest, but the work these very good girls are doing is already paying off.

The BBC even did a story about them:

It seriously blows my mind to think that two women and their gorgeous pups are changing the world all by themselves and in such a big way.

This Earth Day it makes me wonder, what more could I be doing? What about you? Did your heart just grow three sizes like mine did? Let us know in the comments.
