Tiffany Haddish Helps Out Foster with Donated Suitcases

The past year has made me think a lot about giving back to my community, and I’ve been looking for new ways to help people out.

That’s why I was so verklempt to read about one celebrity who has been giving back in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Grammy-winning comedienne Tiffany Haddish and her four younger siblings went into the American foster care system when she was just 12 years old.

As she told David Letterman:

“You’re dropped in these strangers’ houses, you don’t know these people, these people don’t know you, you don’t know if they’re gonna hurt you, if they’re gonna be kind, you don’t have a clue what’s going on.”

What always stuck with Haddish about making the foster care experience extra difficult was that when children are moved from home to home, they’re handed a garbage back to pack up their things.

It made her feel like garbage.

And then one day, in a small way, someone made a huge difference in her life.

Instead of a garbage bag, they gave her a suitcase. Now Haddish felt:

“Like I had a purpose, like I’m a person like I’m not garbage, I got this — it’s mine, and my things are in here, and wherever I go I can take this with me and I’m going somewhere.”

For years, Haddish had encouraged her fans to bring suitcases to her shows and donate them to foster children, including the Beech Brooke organization of Cleveland, Ohio:

After watching her interview with Letterman on Netflix last fall, a foster care specialist from from Lake County, Indiana, Shanell Manuel took note:

Haddish’s point about garbage bags struck a chord with Manuel, who had herself been bothered by the same thing.

As Distractify reported:

“She reached out to Tiffany’s She Ready Foundation, whose mission is to “protect, provide resources, and ensure normalcy for foster children.”

Once again, Haddish came through with 100 suitcases for Indiana foster kids last Christmas.

And her work has inspired other organizations to do suitcase drives in their communities too.

But she’s not finished yet.

As Black Enterprise recently reported, Haddish’s She Ready Foundation has got a new project to help kids who age out of the foster system start careers in the entertainment industry:

The program is supported by Tiffany Haddish’s She Ready Foundation and Ready To Succeed, a Career Accelerator for foster youth, who will provide training, mentorship and ongoing support.”

It’s truly amazing to see someone so dedicated to helping out such a deserving and under-served demographic.

A Woodworker Made Dozens of Desks for Local Kids Who Are Learning From Home

To all the parents who are dealing with their kids learning from home, we salute you…because it can’t be easy for you OR the kiddos who are pretty much housebound during the pandemic that we’re all living through.

But out of all uncertainty and hard times, we occasionally get wholesome stories about everyday people doing great and generous things for other folks…and here’s a good one for you to enjoy.

A woodworker named Mitch Couch made a desk for his kids to work at while learning from home and he shared a photo of the desk on Instagram and remarked how cheap and easy it was to build.

A local business owner learned about Couch’s work and got in touch with him and asked if he would make more desks to be donated to local schools. Couch immediately said yes and got busy making 35 desks for kids in his community.

A local company in Lemoore, California, where Couch lives called Grocery Outlet generously donated the supplies to help out with this important project.

A Treasurer Who Doesn’t Understand Money or Numbers Picked the Wrong Fight

Running a business or an organization can be really tough. There are many decisions to make and you can never be sure any of them will turn out to be the best. But in all the confusion, there are a few basic guiding principles that can help.

For instance, maintain clear and consistent communication. We can all think of a time in our lives when something went horribly, frustratingly wrong simply because someone wouldn’t listen.

That’s the kind of story posted by user omegaweapon on Imgur. She put it up under the name “Entitled treasure [sic] at a charity can’t comprehend how 10% works…. So I’m a thief.” Apparently, OP, who goes by Abs, was dealing with the treasurer of an organization she was renting to. A treasurer who, weirdly enough, does seem to understand much about money or…numbers.

I have my doubts that the man she talked to explained the situation any better than Abs did. I don’t even have anything to do with this situation and I understood what she was saying perfectly the first time. This is what happens when poor listeners back themselves into a corner and refuse to admit they were wrong, even as the evidence mounts. Do yourself a favor: when you’re wrong, just fess up, and move on. It’s…a lot less embarrassing in the long run.
