10+ Child Stars After They Hit Puberty: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The life of a child star isn’t easy. People often get so fixated on the child version that they lose sight of the fact that this is still a real person who is going to get older, go through puberty, and probably not be as cute anymore as they were as a kid. A lot of child stars have been negatively affected by these unrealistic expectations, with several notable examples turning to a life of substance abuse when they just couldn’t grow beyond the persona that first made them famous.

Below are 13 actors and actresses you loved when they were kids and since then…well, you’ve probably wondered, “What the heck happened to them?” at least once.

Answer? Puberty. Puberty happened to them, as it does to everyone, but the average guy or gal doesn’t have to go through it and still land roles in Hollywood.

7 Little-Known Facts About The Beatles’ Famous Debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show”

Whether or not you’re a fan, there’s simply no denying that The Beatles are right up there amongst the most iconic bands of all time. Their debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964 was a total game-changer that sparked a musical revolution.

Here are 7 things you might not know about The Beatles’ first trip to America.

#1. Seeing it live was like winning the lottery.

Only 728 lucky people were chosen to attend, out of 50,000 fans who requested tickets.

#2. One of The Monkees was there that night, too.

Davy Jones was on the show to promote Oliver! on Broadway, in which he played the Artful Dodger (and was nominated for a Tony).

#3. They got paid for their appearance.

While most acts appeared on the show in exchange for mere exposure, The Beatles would only agree to hop the pond if The Ed Sullivan Show agreed to not only cover their travel expenses, but to pay an additional $10k fee (around $80k in today’s dollars).

After getting an agreement for 3 appearances and not just one, a deal was struck and history was set in motion.

#4. That said, it was a bargain.

Close to 74 million people – an astonishing 40% of the country’s population – tuned in for the band’s first U.S. performance.

#5. The “very nice” telegram from Elvis Presley wasn’t actually from Elvis Presley.

The telegram reportedly wished the Fab Four “tremendous success,” but it was actually sent by Elvis’ manager, Colonel Tom Parker, because he thought it would make The King look good. Elvis was notoriously jealous of The Beatles, and the feeling was likely mutual – Harrison responded to the telegram backstage with a mocking “Elvis who?”

#6. They weren’t the only act that night.

Don’t feel badly if you don’t remember Brill & McCall – few do. They followed The Beatles performance and recall that they couldn’t hear each other during their sketch because of the screaming still going on.

Still, McCall doesn’t regret it, saying “we were there when the world changed.”

#7. The show’s musical director didn’t think much of the band.

His comment to The New York Times? “The only thing that’s different is the hair, as far as I can see. I give them a year.”

Keep on rockin’!

Netflix’s “Tidying up with Marie Kondo” Inspires Massive Wave of Thrift Store Donations

Tidying up with Marie Kondo hit Netflix on January 1st, and exploded in popularity almost instantly. You’ve almost certainly seen some people on your friends’ list talking about it and maybe also going a little nuts purging their stuff. The signature “KonMari” method helps you keep your spaces clutter free and encourages people to get rid of anything that doesn’t “spark joy” – i.e. it’s better to have 5 shirts you love and look forward to wearing than 15 shirts you’re “meh” about. The show has not only inspired thousands of people to take stock of their possessions, it’s also had an unintended (but awesome) side effect.

People aren’t tossing their joyless items – they’re donating them.

A Chicago bookstore reported getting as many donations in 2 days as they typically receive in 2 months, and Goodwills and libraries around the country are reporting the same or similar upticks in generosity.

That said, Goodwill’s public relations and multimedia manager Malini Wilkes told CNN that it’s tough to attribute the increase in donations to Marie Kondo and her methods alone: donations are typically up this time of year.

“People have New Year’s resolutions, people have time to get their boxes together, that kind of thing. Unfortunately, at the current time, it’s too soon to determine the impact from the Marie Kondo show.”

Regardless, people who shop at thrift stores are ready and waiting to scoop up your castoffs. One person’s joyless blouse is another person’s ruffled chiffon pleasure, right?

Or something like that.

If you’re into tidying up, I wish you luck. If you’re excited about gorging on other people’s purged items, it seems that, whether or not Marie Kondo is responsible, now is the time to head to your local Goodwill or used book store.

Just be ready to fight for the best stuff.

“The Worst Alphabet Book Ever” Might Be the Smartest Kids’ Book of the Year

Have you ever wondered why the X in “xylophone” sounds more like a “Z”? Or how about how the P in “Psychic” is basically silent and serves essentially no purpose?

Well, it turns out you’re not alone, because rapper Lushlife and his friend, computer programmer Chris Carpenter, wondered the same thing. Lushlife and Chris were playing some alphabet flashcards with their kids, when they pulled out a card that was a little bit odd. That moment inspired P is for Pterodactyl: The Worst Alphabet Book Ever.

Carpenter said in an interview with Bored Panda,

“We were hanging out with our mutual friends and their kid, playing with these alphabet flashcards. We both got a laugh out of the card for “Q” which read: ‘Q is for Quinoa.’ That was so entertaining to us because, well, what little kid knows or cares about quinoa? And also, isn’t that a terrible “Q” word, considering that it isn’t even phonetic? That was the moment that sparked the initial idea to create our own alphabet book with only words like quinoa.”

What started out being hilarious, later became a serious endeavor.

“Neither of us are children’s book authors by trade — Chris is a computer programmer, and I’m a rapper otherwise known as Lushlife,” he said. “When we started down the road to bring this book to life, I don’t think we realized just how long the process would take. From start to finish, the project took almost three years to complete.”

As they steadily found these mischievous words, they stumbled upon the lesson we, as parents, should teach our children at an earlier age.

“We tend to underestimate our children when we present an overly simplified version of the world in teaching certain subjects. It can be enormously frustrating, for example, to have a particular set of spelling rules drilled into one’s head, only to discover later that “I before E” is a giant conspiracy. Of course, the basics are important too, but why not hint at a more complete picture from a relatively early stage, and trust that our kids can handle it?”

And many parents agreed, rushing out to buy up the book.

Per The Guardian, the first print run of 10,000  sold out in a flash and over 100,000 orders are still needing to be filled.

Weeks later, it is still an Amazon #1 Best Seller.

“The first day we sold out of the entire first run; it’s been quite surreal from there,” said Haldar, whose book is now sitting at No 8 on the New York Times bestseller list. “It’s been totally unexpected.”

Seriously Crazy Facts About “Crazy Rich Asians”

Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, Crazy Rich Asians, was recently released as a blockbuster movie by the same name and by all accounts, it was a smashing success. Some even went so far as to say the film is helping revive the rom-com genre.

The story follows college professor Rachel Chu as she travels with her fiance, Nick Young, to Singapore to meet his family. She soon discovers that his family is one of the richest in the country…and his mother is an ice queen (classic!).

The all-Asian cast created an instant buzz for the movie, which was critically acclaimed and one of the highest grossing films of the past ten years. Here are ten more crazy facts about Crazy Rich Asians.

1. Many people in Singapore criticized the movie by saying casting did not truly reflect their demographic because it lacked Chinese and Southeast Asian actors.

However, global reception of the movie has been much more positive.

2. Chu and his music supervisor searched YouTube to find singers fluent in Mandarin to provide covers for the soundtrack.

And if you’ve heard it, you know all that research definitely paid off.

3. One producer interested in the film project early on suggested Rachel be white.

Thankfully, Kwan optioned the project to Warner Bros instead for $1 to keep creative control and avoid any more stupid suggestions like that.

4. Michelle Yeoh, who plays domineering MIL Eleanor, is also Malaysian.

She and Golding have another fellow countryman in the film: Ronny Chieng, who played Eddie Cheng, Nick’s cousin.

5. The sequel has already been optioned, and it’s called China Rich Girlfriend.

Sounds like that’s more of a prequel in my opinion, but I’ll wait till it comes out to judge.

6. Wu has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Obviously, the movie is more than just your average rom-com.

7. This was Golding’s first film.

Before starring in Crazy Rich Asians, Golding’s only on-camera experience was hosting a travel show.

8. The film, which had a production budget of $30 million, has grossed $238 million worldwide.

It out-grossed Sandra Bullock’s The Proposal and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Sex and the City, making it the top-grossing romantic comedy in the past ten years.

9. Constance Wu, who played Rachel Chu, feared scheduling conflicts with Fresh Off The Boat.

So she wrote a letter to director John Chu, convincing him to change the schedule because she connected with Rachel’s character so much.

10. Henry Golding being cast as Nick Young caused some controversy.

Golding’s father is white and his mother is Malaysian. Korean-American celebrity, Jamie Chung, took issue with the fact that Golding “wasn’t Chinese enough.” Golding graciously said he was happy that people were looking at the casting and voicing their opinions. Chung has since apologized.

What makes Crazy Rich Asians so special is what it highlights: just because people are the same ethnicity in a broad sense doesn’t make them alike (a pretty uncontroversial point that for some reason still needs to be emphasized in 2018). Every family and each individual carries unique experiences and backgrounds that set them apart – but at the same time, family and love are pretty universal.

Also, being rich doesn’t always mean having a lot of money.

Rock Star David Bowie Once Launched His Own Internet Service To Rival AOL

David Bowie was a legend in our time, the likes of whom we may never see again. His genius knew few bounds. He was well-loved as a star of stage and screen, but it turns out he was also a bit of a tech visionary!

Back in 1998, David Bowie, international rock star extraordinaire, made a pretty bold announcement – he was launching his own internet service! Called BowieNet, the platform aimed to unite music fans around the world with uncensored access to the internet, as well as plenty of exclusive content found on www.davidbowie.com.

Users would get a customizable home page, an email address (your.name@davidbowie.com), groups, chat capabilities, gaming and more.

Pretty much Facebook, except run by David Bowie, which makes it better.

It all started when two internet pioneers, Robert Goodale and Ron Roy, came to Bowie with an idea. How about an online fan club that would also be an internet service provider? Bowie was already using email and digital releases to reach his fan base, so he was psyched to give it a go.

The competition? America Online.

So, the laughter settled, Bowie went to work on his vision. Older folks will remember receiving CD-ROMs in the mail, finding them delivered with their pizzas or a few of them falling out of magazines offering free trials of AOL. But Bowie wanted to experiment with his CD-ROM. He created 3D-rendered environments, music and videos, along with the customized Internet Explorer browser. Some material couldn’t even be accessed except for online.

He also interacted with fans, posting as “Sailor” on message boards and hosting live chats.

Bowie had big plans for his brand of early social media. But when dial-up internet disintegrated, his 100,000 subscribers trickled away. BowieNet shut down in 2006. No one much noticed. The announcement wasn’t even made until 2012. Ironically, the post appeared on Bowie’s own Facebook page.

Bowie made a career out of being revolutionary. His accomplishments with BowieNet foreshadowed everything internet users are offered now.  He couldn’t have known the power the internet would ultimately have in the music business. But he saw the potential and jumped in like he did with everything in his glitzy life.

Imagine if he launched BowieNet during the Ziggy Stardust days.

This Hidden Shrine of Danny DeVito Inside a College Bathroom is Raising So Many Questions

Danny DeVito is a pretty famous guy. He’s played some memorable roles in films like Matilda and Get Shorty, as well as his extended run on TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But he’s not exactly the kind of actor you’d think would have a shrine dedicated to him, right?

Wrong. Apparently, students at New York’s SUNY Purchase College have done just that… or they created a cult following for their leader, Danny DeVito. Who knows.

Here’s what we know: recently, someone discovered a secret shrine in one of the college’s bathrooms, hidden behind a paper towel dispenser.

Not only is it wonderfully creepy and/or charming (depending on who you ask), it’s filled with treasures left behind for the It’s Always Sunny in Philiadelphia star. Plastic spoons, cigarettes, liquor bottles, and a graffiti picture of Squidward, to name a few, were laid at the feet of a cardboard cut out of DeVito.

Once the Administration caught wind, they tweeted:

But soon after it went viral and students began clawing to give thanks and service to the shrine, the school sealed it up.

Many students, as well as other twitter enthusiasts, took to reviving it in various ways to show the love and support every fallen shrine deserves.

Danny had a good laugh as well and sent an important message about garbage:

But questions still remain…Who did this? Why the obsession with DeVito? And how in the world did they find a removable paper towel dispenser? Alas, we may never know the truth, and I hope it doesn’t keep you up at night wondering as well…
