Here Are Some Quick Tips for Capturing Those Cool Blurred Background Photos on Your iPhone

All of us want to take that perfect photo with our iPhone, especially those super-sharp portraits with the blurred background where your subject appears to be professionally shot. For all you budding photographers out there, here are three easy ways to make your photo skills the envy of your friends (even if you don’t own a new phone with a great camera).

3. Portrait Mode

This is the simplest method. If you have an iPhone X, XR, XS, or XS Max or an iPhone 7 or 8 Plus, you should have a Portrait Mode feature.

Open up your handy camera app, swipe until you find “Portrait” and simply position your subject within the limits of the lens. It will tell you if you need to move closer or farther away. When the words “Natural Light” appear, then you are set to snap at your heart’s content!

2. Position your subject just right – For older iPhones

Place your subject within a few feet of the lens. A yellow box should appear, tap it and the lens will be forced to focus on the object, leaving the background out of focus. Just move closer or farther away until the background fully blurs. You can also tap an object and hold on it to force the camera to lock into focus on it. Then it will keep the same focus, even if you or your subject moves.

1. Third-Party Apps

Sometimes, older iPhones just aren’t capable of capturing that desired blur. Therefore, we recommend trying out a third-party app that performs this feature. There are free apps available (like Blur Photo Background) or paid ones with better features (like AfterFocus). Either way, try some out!

Cinnamon Roll Shooters Leave Pumpkin Spice in the Dust. Check It Out.

Step aside, Pumpkin Spice, there’s a new “fall” sheriff in town. And it’s alcoholic! Fireball to be specific.

Let’s all welcome the cinnamon roll shooter that’s making people put down their Starbucks and enjoy something a little less basic.

These sweet and spicy shooters are perfect for after-work happy hours, or when cozying up to a bonfire. And guess what? They’re easy to make and easy on the wallet.

First, grab up your ingredients!

  • 12 oz. Cream soda
  • 4 oz. Fireball
  • Whipped cream, garnish

And if you don’t drink, no worries, we’ve got you covered. Check out AR Kays’ non-alcoholic cinnamon whiskey.

Second, get mixing!

Simply add cream soda and Fireball into a pitcher. Stir gently. Pour contents into shot glasses then garnish with a dollop of whipped cream.

Third, start drinking!

Watch as your friends shoot back your concoction. You are everyone’s fall hero.

*For any big fans of Fireball, you can make this a cocktail instead. Just add 3 parts cream soda to 1 part Fireball.

Remember to drink responsibly and enjoy!

Disney World Is Teaming up with Cirque DU Soleil for Its a New Show

Get ready! Disney and Cirque du Soleil are teaming up for the first time in over 20 years!

Disney announced that they’ll be producing a Cirque show for Disney Springs, a shopping area near Walt Disney World in Florida. The show is a collaborative effort between Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering.

Cirque du Soleil is the largest theatrical producer in the world, and if you’ve ever been to a Cirque show, then you already know how magical they are. It’s not your average ringed circus — the shows are typically set to music and a theme, and they each sell a story throughout the performance. Plus, there are super impressive stunts and acrobatics.

Disney is no stranger to these types of shows. In fact, they produce very similar shows for their parks on a regular basis, so this team-up makes total sense.

“For more than 60 years, we’ve been bringing Disney stories and characters to life in our theme parks around the world,” Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Bob Chapek said. “Now our teams at Walt Disney Imagineering and Walt Disney Animation Studios have joined with Cirque du Soleil to create an entirely new experience that will wow Walt Disney World guests and bring timeless, enchanting Disney stories to life in an unforgettable new way.”

The new show has yet to receive an official title, but according to reporters who were at Disney’s presentation, it will have an animation theme, which is very fitting for Disney.

“New animation sequences will be created for the new Cirque du Soleil show. And the live performers will interact with the animated characters,” Ashley Carter wrote. “The story revolves around a young girl who gets sent into the world of animation.”

Tickets are already on sale for the show. Previews start in March 2020, and it opens in April.

This 392-Year-Old Bonsai Tree Survived Hiroshima

If you find yourself at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C., check out a piece of Japan’s history that dates back to the 17th century.

It’s a bonsai tree, gifted by master Masaru Yamaki to America on its bicentennial. The 392-year-old white pine is the oldest tree in the collection – it was planted in 1625, cultivated and personally cared for over the years by one master or another, and was living only 2 miles from where the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

i met a 400 year old tree today

A post shared by Brendan Novak (@brendanrnovak) on

The Yamaki family – Masaru’s son and grandson – revealed that the tree was sitting on a garden bench at their home when the bomb went off. It survived (and so did all of the other trees in their garden, along with their family).

Though the tree’s history is amazing (it’s a rare specimen that hails from the island of Miyajima), it’s not the oldest bonsai in the world – that title belongs to a 550-year-old tree at Tokyo’s Imperial Palace.

They have one that’s 450 years old, too, though no word on how close either of those were to a bomb that stunned the world with its destructive power.

The gift of the tree was a nice gesture, but you have to wonder how it feels about residing in the country who dropped an atomic bomb so close to its home – and if plants had memories, whether it would ever be able to forget the devastation it must have witnessed that day, and in the years that followed.

Travel Instagrammers Share Helpful Tips for Taking Better Travel Photos

No vacation feels complete anymore without the perfect travel photos these days. If you want to take your travel photography up several notches, these travel Instagrammers have some advice for you.

Part of the magic of photography is all about timing. One Berlin-based travel photographer, Theodora Melnik (@______theo), tells HuffPost that sunrise is the perfect time for a photo.

Sigh, time to leave Siracusa 😭😭😭

A post shared by Theodora ™ (@______theo) on

“I can’t recommend shooting sunrise enough,” Theodora said. “Whenever I make the effort, I get to explore even the busiest of places practically by myself, which if you’re thinking of the Eiffel Tower or the Spanish Steps is really something.”

And speaking of the sun — sunset is also a picture-perfect time of day, but don’t make the rookie mistake of only photographing the actual sunset.

“On vacation when you go to the beach at sunset, everyone has their phones pointed directly at the red orb going down over the ocean, which is really pretty and definitely worth capturing. But don’t forget to turn around and see what the sun is shining on,” Tyson Wheatley (@twheat) explains.

Similarly, when visiting a major monument, people tend to snap a photo of it for their records. But Elke Frotscher (@elice_f) recommends photographing the little things that surround the big monuments.

This allows for a more unique photo that truly captures the essence of the place, instead of just a photo of the Eiffel Tower that looks exactly like something you could find on Google.

Have a great trip, and hope the photos turn out great!

Medieval Drawings of Cats Licking Their Own Butts. That Is All.

Cats have been domesticated for less time than dogs, but that doesn’t mean people haven’t been fascinated with our feline friends for centuries – a fact proven by these medieval paintings of cats grooming their nethers.

And to be honest, butts are pretty much always funny.

A Mexican Physicist Solved a 2,000-Year-Old Lens Problem with One Wild Equation

Even Isaac Newton couldn’t crack this case — but Rafael G. González-Acuña did.

A physicist in Mexico just solved a problem that has plagued scientists for over 2,000 years.

For centuries, lenses have faced a problem: the corners and edges are always a little soft and out of focus. It’s called “spherical aberration,” and it’s caused by differences in light refraction across the lens, along with imperfections in its shape and materials.

Spherical aberration was presumed to be an unsolvable issue. Lens designers have developed workarounds to counteract and correct the effect, resulting in a uniformly clear image. However, these adaptive techniques can get incredibly pricey — which is part of why high-quality photography gear costs so much money.

Enter Rafael.

Rafael is a doctoral student at Mexico’s Tecnológico de Monterrey. After months of work, he came up with an equation to design a lens that eliminates spherical aberration completely. This equation works for a lens of any size, material or purpose.

This development is not only exciting on a scientific level, but it will also provide practical benefits to many different types of people. Cameras of all kinds, including smartphone cameras, will be easier and cheaper to design. Photographers will no longer have to deal with focus issues with their high-end equipment. Sharper lenses will also be able to be used for other optical devices, like telescopes and microscopes.

All in all, Rafael’s breakthrough is evidence that no problem is too old to solve.
