13 of the Best Rollercoasters in America

If you love rollercoasters and thrill rides of all sorts, you might have a bucket list that looks different than most – and if it’s to ride the most dangerous, craziest roller coasters around, we’ve got you covered!

Here are 13 of the most iconic roller coasters across the USA.

13. Rampage

Bessemer, Alabama, is home to Alabama Adventure Amusement Park, where Rampage – a 120-foot tall wooden coaster runs at 56mph and boasts a 102-foot drop.

12. Desert Storm

Castles-n-Coasters is located in Phoenix, and Desert Storm takes you on double upside-down loops, vertical, drops, spins – the words.

Its 90-feet tall but only lasts 90 seconds from start to finish – anyone can manage that!

At Six Flags Magic Mountain, you can find an innovative “fifth dimension” roller coaster.

It features 360-degree seats that extend on wings off the track, leaving your body free to flip around while the coaster makes its way around the tracks.

10. Cliffhanger Rollercoaster

This coaster, located at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, is the “highest elevation full-sized roller coaster in North America,” and sits at at altitude of 7160 feet.

The views are great, if you don’t mind opening your eyes while you’re screaming.

9. Boulder Dash

This rollercoaster, located at Lake Compounce in Bristol, was awarded the title of Best Wooden Roller Coaster in the World in 2013.

It reaches a top speed of 60mph, and apparently is just full of surprises.

8. SuperFlip 360

Delaware is also home to no actual rollercoasters, but Funland in Rehoboth Beach does have this thing that swings you around 360 degrees.

It should make you want to puke, if nothing else.

7. Tigris

Busch Garden’s Tigris beats out coasters at Sea World due to it’s tall launch, number of loops and drops, and the fact that it tops out at 60mph.

6. Goliath (Six Flags Over Georgia)

Six Flags over Georgia in Austell introduced Goliath in 2006, and the first drop may have you wishing you’d taken the chicken exit.

5. Aftershock

Silverwood Theme Park in Athol is home to the world’s “Top Hanging Coaster,” the Aftershock.

It’s 191-feet tall, sends you forward, backward, and upside down, and will make you think twice about having lunch before you get on.

4. Goliath (Six Flags Over America)

Yes, there’s another Goliath. There are actually six, but this one is as Six Flags Great America, near Chicago.

This huge wooden roller coaster that will lift you out of your seat on more than one occasion.

3. The Voyage

Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is a theme park in the town of Santa Clause.

It’s biggest, baddest offering is The Voyage, a wooden coaster with steep drops, underground tunnels, and turns that will have you holding on for dear life.

Adventureland, in Altoona, offers you The Monster, which loops, corkscrews, and something called an Immelmann that should give you pause.

Saturday Night Live can be considered a cultural institution in the United States. Generations of people have grown up watching the weekend comedy hour, and a lot of people continue to watch it each week.

With a show that has been so popular for so long, it can be easy to assume that we know everything there is to know about the cast and crew, both of the past and the present.

But there are always secrets out there, even for a show’s most diehard fans.

Here 14 behind-the-scenes Saturday Night Live stories that even the show’s biggest fans haven’t heard yet.

1. Will Ferrell for a whole season

That’s right: funnyman Will Ferrell once wore the exact same outfit — jeans, a Western-style shirt, and a trucker hat — for an entire season of the show.

2. Seth Meyers used to get pranked.

Fred Armisen and Bill Hader used to have a favorite hobby: calling Seth Meyers in the middle of the night as a prank.

The pair would pretend they were the hosts of a radio show, and that they had accidentally given out Seth’s phone number on the air.

3. Bill Hader couldn’t handle Kate.

One of the big rules at SNL is that anyone who watches someone audition absolutely cannot laugh, no matter how funny they are.

The story goes that during Kate McKinnon’s audition, Bill Hader had to be removed from the room because he couldn’t stop cracking up.

4. Larry David once quit.

Larry David got so mad that his sketches didn’t make it to the show that he once stormed out of the studio and quit… but then came right back to work on Monday.

5. The season 27 wrap party was wild.

The writers threw a massive party that included a slip ‘n’ slide made up of spilled punch, and Horatio Sanz fractured his ribs while sliding!

6. They made bets about Paris Hilton.

Seth Meyers bet $1,000 that he’d be the first person Paris would ask a personal question of, but in the end, no one won the money.

7. Will Ferrell accidentally punched Ellen.

When Ellen DeGeneres hosted the show, Will accidentally punched her in the face while rehearsing!

8. Cheri Oteri almost missed her audition.

The SNL alum had terrible food poisoning the night before her audition, though she ended up making it.

9. Rachel Dratch threw out her back.

Rachel once threw out her back during a read-through, and Johnny Knoxville offered her a pile of miscellaneous pills that he pulled out of his pocket.

10. Male cast members were kind of gross.

It turns out that male cast members used to pee in cups and just… leave the cups around their offices.

In fact, Tina Fey explained that this appears to be the difference between male and female cast members of SNL.

11. Kate McKinnon put a hole in her wall.

The story goes like this: after finding out the SNL offices were being renovated and a wall would be torn down, Kate decided to dance around her office with a hammer.

She ended up knocking a big hole in the wall… and then found out they were just being painted, not torn down. Oops!

12. John Hamm helped out.

The night before John hosted the show, a heavily pregnant Amy received a call that her OBGYN had died of a heart attack.

When she burst into tears, no one knew what to do.

John sprang into action, telling her, “This is a really important show for me, I need you to get your shit together.”

Amy ended up laughing.

13. Barack Obama made a change.

Lorne Michael once cut a sketch from the show because a then-candidate Obama thought it was funny, but too much.

14. Dog food saved Eddie.

Nearly the entire cast was fired during Eddie Murphy’s first season, but he kept his job because the head writer, Michael O’Donoghue, thought that Eddie actually ate dog food on the air.

It turns out he ate hash instead, but he still had this job.

Rollercoasters in the United States That Will Scare You Silly

11. Excalibur

This wooden rollercoaster lives at Funtown Splashtown USA in Saco, Maine, and is both the tallest and longest rollercoaster in New England.

It’s not the biggest one in the world, but it’s got great views.

10. Superman: Ride of Steel

Six Flags America in Upper Marlboro offers this “hypercoaster” that’s 205-feet tall and has a 200-foot drop.

9. Shivering Timbers

This huge wooden coaster, at Michigan’s Adventure in Muskegon, lifts you out of your seat along over a mild of track.

8. Wild Thing

The views are great from the top of Valleyfair’s Wild Thing, located in Shakopee.

It hits 74mph, making it one of the fastest in the country, and includes a figure-eight helix.

7. Outlaw Run

In Branson, Missouri, is Silver Dollar City – home to the second-fastest roller coaster in the world.

Outlaw Run tops 68mph over it’s 162-foot drop.

I got to finish the night last evening at my 3rd indoor amusement park Adventuredome! Attached to the “Circus Circus” hotel sits a 5 acre glass enclosed dome containing 25 rides,2 of which being outstanding rollercoasters in “El Loco” and “Canyon Blaster”. I’m really hesitant to call this the best indoor amusement park I’ve visited but i will say it blows MOA out of the water. They have a surprisingly fantastic top 2,Canyon Blaster easily jumped into my Top 3 arrow loopers. With how compact the layout is and how quickly each element is taken it feels so intense and out of control. I found myself greying out EVERY time by the 2nd vertical loop and the lighting effects mixed with the enclosed rock work really make the ride. El loco was just as good as its sister coaster “Steel Hawg” at Indiana Beach. The first drop is LOADED with ejector and both the dive loop and barrel roll provide INCREDIBLE Hangtime. I wasn’t expecting much from this park but it blew me away! Have you visited Adventuredome? Las Vegas (of course) is home to this indoor coaster with double-loops and douple-corkscrews.

It careens through Adventuredome at the Circus Circus Hotel & Casino.

5. Untamed

Canobie Lake Park in Salem offers zero gravity rolls, banked turns, vertical drops, and loops on Untamed, and is worth the trip, for sure.

4. El Toro

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson houses El Toro, voted the scariest and most fear-inducing coaster in the state among several awesome choices.

3. The Hurricane

Western Playland, in Sunland, added The Hurricane in 2015.

The ride is a steel windstorm-style coaster that doesn’t go really fast, but excels in g-force.

2. Cyclone

This iconic Coney Island ride isn’t the tallest or fastest, but it does feel like you’re going to die at any minute.

This steel coaster tops 232 feet, and stands watch over Carowinds in Charlotte.

I haven’t ridden the one in my home state of Missouri yet, even!
