A “Karen” Tried to Scam a Free Meal Until She Realized Who the Owner Was

In case you haven’t heard, a “Karen” is an entitled, usually middle-aged woman who complains to authority figures about others’ behavior.

This particular Karen decided that her complaint to the manager would get her a free meal. She couldn’t have been more off-base in her assumption, specifically as it concerned the owner.

A friend of his begins the story:

With help from his dad, the man was able to open the restaurant in the perfect location, and it was a smashing success right out of the gate. Everything was going well, until Karen showed up with her husband.

Right away, the owner, who was also the server, knew she was going to be a problem—the complaints began as soon as she sat down. Initially, he played along .

He knew he couldn’t keep his composure for long—so did she and, sensing a potential free meal, increased her demands.

She asked for the manager, as Karens often do. He brought someone over to take on the role.

She could have won an Academy Award for the story she told.

The “owner” and the server couldn’t keep up the ruse for long. They broke character.

The real owner came clean, and Karen was finally speechless.

Redditors who work in restaurants loved how this story ended, and the person who told it also had a bit of an update.

They deal with customers who try to scam free meals all the time and say restaurant owners are usually oblivious to this behavior because they’re not on the floor.

Workers shared that this also occurs in fast food places. Even though they’re a lot cheaper, free is free to some people.

This Tumblr Thread Discusses How Fierce Medieval Battle Tactics Really Were

No matter how you feel about warfare and fighting, it’s difficult to deny that people have definitely come up with some pretty incredible battle tactics.

People are especially inventive during the Medieval Period or Middle Ages.

This Tumblr thread breaks down a few of the more powerful, surprising, and downright fierce Medieval battle tactics that existed.

For starters, staircases in castles were designed to benefit right-handed castle defenders over anyone else.

Here’s one example that gives you an idea of how tough it would be for anyone trying to attack by going up the stairs:

Once noble families started living in castles as their homes (instead of, say, a fortress), wider staircases came into fashion.

It turns out the advent of gunpowder was a pretty big gamechanger for castle interior design.

The placement of walls was also entirely strategic.

The strategic placement of walls is seen all over the world. On the East Coast in what is now the United States, homes and property were usually protected with palisades or wooden fences.

Basically, it comes down to one fairly universal truth: it’s pretty challenging to defend yourself if there’s a wall in your way, right?

Castles also used to have another form of protection. For example, the  Bodiam Castle in Sussex has a right-angled bridge to further endanger attacking forces.

Since most people were right-handed, the tactic was definitely effective.

Being right-handed was also beneficial (if not all but required) when using a sword and shield.

The same is true of jousting: if you’re left-handed, it just wasn’t going to work out.

This was so entrenched in Medieval warfare and the like that even the horses were trained to swerve to the right.

Right-handed preference extended well into our recent past as well.

While it is technically possible to hold the instrument in your left hand, you need to be right-handed to properly wield it.

Eventually, some left-handed families started redesigning their castles to benefit themselves.

This was probably pretty confusing for anyone who expected the usual design!

These tactics are definitely pretty wild! It’s always so cool to read about how things worked in the days of yore.

Which part of this surprised you the most? Let us know in the comments!

Here are the ‘Do’s and Don’t’s’ From the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic

We’ve been here before as far as pandemics go—exactly 100 years ago. But have we learned anything since then?

From 1918 to early 1920, the world was held captive by a virus known as H1N1, or the Spanish Flu. Like COVID-19, it spread across the globe within a matter of months. When it was all said and done, 500 million people—about a third of the world’s population—had been infected, and approximately 50 million people died.

COVID-19 is a different virus, but the story of its spread is quite similar; people even had the same arguments about wearing masks and social distancing that we have today. The evidence is in this “Do’s and Don’t’s” lists from the 1918 pandemic that appeared on Twitter and immediately went viral.

The most important things on the list—wearing a mask, washing your hands, and avoiding crowds—are things we’re supposed to be doing today. But even 100 years ago, we had to plead with people to heed this advice and listen to scientists.

Most people complied, but a lot didn’t; there were four waves of the disease before the pandemic ended in April 1920.

Had they done what they were supposed to do, there’s no doubt that the infection and death tolls would have been lower, and the pandemic would have ended earlier.

We’re still relatively new to COVID-19, and we can still mitigate the damage. While there’s no way of eradicating COVID-19, we can pay attention to science and keep ourselves and others safe.

You know what they say: “Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Are you doing all you can to keep yourself and others healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic? Let us know in the comments below!

An Uber Driver Exacts Revenge After Customer Refuses to Pay for Her Ride

Uber drivers get to see it all.

Considering that they drive at all times of day and night, and have no idea what their passengers will be like before they meet, it’s a wonder that they’re often so cheerful and patient.

This is extra true when you consider how many Uber drivers encounter customers who are a bit entitled.

One San Diego-based driver shared that back in 2018, a lot of customers were privy to a trick. If they didn’t want to pay for their ride, they would “accidentally” cancel the ride during the trip.

After canceling the trip, the customers would often ask if the driver would just finish the drive. You know, since it was an “accident” and all.

This driver got fed up with the tactic and decided to exact revenge.

Uber was super popular in the region at the time (and still is), so business was pretty great. That is, when customers would pay.

This had to be such an annoying thing to experience. Customers looking for free rides is the worst! A lot of Uber drivers really need the money.

The driver says they picked up a new customer and could tell this person had money so assumed it would be fine.

Unfortunately, she canceled the ride… as it was happening.

The driver asked the woman to rebook the route, considering it was already happening… but she said no.

The woman flat-out insisted that the driver keep going, even though she clearly had no plans to pay.

So the driver came up with a new plan.

So the exit signs are getting smaller, they’re getting closer to the border… she’s probably totally freaking out!

Hopefully, this customer learned a little lesson in not acting entitled when you’re trying to scam someone who is providing you a service. Uber drivers are people, too.

Some people had a few thoughts about what happened…

Because this is kind of a crazy situation…

And what would you do?

People Recall the Worst Pain They’ve Ever Felt

Many of us can answer this question immediately – childbirth, kidney stones, physical trauma – the worst pain of your life can flood back with a memory like you wouldn’t believe.

That said, until you read these 15 people’s stories, you probably thought your worst was pretty bad…but that might not be the case.

15. I would still like the drugs, please.

I split my toe open to the bone and the doc said it would take longer for the anesthetic to take effect than it would to stitch the toe up.

So, lots of screeching from me.

14. Sounds like a nightmare.

I broke my femur in a car accident, all I felt was pure adrenaline like I had never felt before and no pain. They got me to the hospital fairly quickly and hit me with 2 shots of morphine ASAP.

Next thing I know they were drilling a hole through my calf with a power drill so they could set the leg with a pin and I was wide awake with no pain due to the drugs. It was the other drivers 6th DUI offense

13. This person is a WRITER.

I missed a step one morning and I folded my foot over so much that my big toe touched my heel.

I made a noise I had never made before.

It was like a dying rabbit who was into Finnish death metal.

12. How do you get through it?

Trigeminal neuralgia (also called the suicide disease).

I’m one of the lucky ones though, that it improved with treatment so I only had it for about a year.

Basically felt like someone was slamming an ice pick into my ear, jaw, and face.

Even brushing my teeth hurt.

11. How does this happen?

A 5 foot section of my small intestine became strangulated and died.

20 times more painful than an 8mm kidney stone.

10. At least it’s easily remedied.

I slipped on steps one winter fell on my back had my wind knocked out, cracked 2 ribs and dislocated shoulder.

And worst part is that it was like 3 steps…

9. This made me actually cringe.

I was ice skating and going through a major growth spurt when I was 13. The skates were too tight. I hit a crack in the ice and did a maneuver to stop from falling on my face. Well CRACK! SNAP! I shattered my tibia from just bellow the knee all the way down to the ankle, in a spiral fracture.

Because the skates were so tight in fact that when I hobbled and limped off of the ice and had them removed my leg did not immediately swell up. I knew my bone was broken. I could feel and hear the various shards of shin bone grinding up against one another and the muscles. Yet, people assumed at most I maybe bruised my bone.

I went home. Limping and in the worst physical pain. My father said I was ok. But after about 12 hours and the pain just getting worse I finally was taken to the ER – where I learned I fractured my leg in 8 different spots on the tibia.

I had to get metal pins put in, and was in various casts for 4 straight months and a boot for two.

8. I did not need to read this.

My appendix exploded like a water balloon while inside me.

7. Another one of these and no thanks.

Trigeminal neuralgia. It’s called “the suicide disease” for a very good reason. It felt like my jaw was being crushed in a vice. The pain is beyond description, an episode would last for 8-10 hours, and no painkiller touched it. I would hit my head on things trying to knock myself out.

For comparison, I was getting an x-ray for a “bad backache”, and when I gave the urine sample you have to give first, the tech saw that I had stones in it. Kidney stones. My “bad backache” was fucking kidney stones. TN really recalibrates your pain meter. Nothing goes past a six anymore.

I had brain surgery nine years ago to fix it and it’s the best damn decision I ever made. I’m nervous because it’s often not a permanent fix, and I’m afraid it will come back, but I’m so thankful to be pain-free for now.

6. You’ve gotta keep up with those pain meds.

This is the worst pain I’ve ever seen someone feel. My sister had open heart surgery at 23 to repair a murmur. Several days later when she first got home the nerve block in her side started to wear off.

She managed to fall asleep at the beginning but she woke up screaming like a banshee. I’ll never forget it. I got her to stand up but she looked at me and went white as a sheet and passed out.

5. That’s gotta hurt.

Probably the time I jumped onto the seat of my bike, and actually just sat on my testicle.

4. Were his doctors into pain??

I shot a 3.5″ spiral nail into my finger

The doctor pulled it out with pliers, no freezing or pain killers. I had 3 nurses holding me down.

I’ve broken many bones and it doesn’t even come close to comparing

3. This kind of back pain is the worst.

I sat up to leave after a meeting at work and my entire back seized up. It was all I could do to make it home. I had to lay on the couch in a weird position just to experience no pain. The slightest movement (even lifting a fork) and my back would seize up again.

I finally forced myself that night to go to the ER because my mind was racing with what it could be. X-rays showed nothing so I don’t know to this day what happened. It was about a week before I could fully move. Worst pain I’ve ever felt!

2. A miserable description.

Gout. The foot swelled up massively, it was bright red and hot to the touch.

Touch was the LAST thing I wanted, just having enough air movement to shift the hairs on my foot was excruciating.

Unbelievable pain that I couldn’t escape from.

I swelled so much that when it finally went back to normal, the skin sloughed off like I had had a massive sunburn.

I could feel EVERY heartbeat, painfully, in my foot.

1. I’m glad this is never a thing that will happen to me.

Epididimitis, inflammation of the testicle cord, described as a feeling akin to testicular torsion

At one point it hurt so bad I couldn’t sit up straight in class, took a whole week to get a doctors appointment and at least 2 more days for the meds to really make the pain die down

That was 6 years ago and even to this day that cord is so sensitive that it hurts if I sit wrong and occasionally has mini inflammation episodes

Icing on the cake, pretty sure I was told it could lead to impotence at a younger age than most men

I honestly cannot even (and do not want to) imagine most of these!

You Can Rent a Floating Pod That Can Sail Anywhere!

A lot of people are looking for ways they can take a vacation but still stay safe from the global pandemic.

The health crisis appears to only be holding steady or getting worse, which makes a lot of usual forms of travel ill-advised.

Luckily, there is a brand new way to travel around the world: by taking a floating pod that can fit up to 12 of your family and friends.

The “pods” are actually luxury hotel suites from the company Anthénea. Architect Jean-Michel Ducancelle was inspired by James Bond’s floating pod in the movie The Spy Who Loved Me.

Kelly Allen at Delish explains the wonders of the floating hotel suites:

The floating habitat runs off of solar energy and releases clean water back into the ocean using black and gray water stations. It uses sand screw anchoring to avoid any damage to the underwater ecosystem and environment.

Inside, the dome-shaped vessel offers 360-views of the ocean. The bedroom includes an extra large round bed with an overflow round bathtub that can be filled with sea or freshwater.

There’s also a small living area with kitchen necessities and fiberglass windows that allow you to see into the ocean.

Sounds pretty incredible, right? You can even buy the pod outright and live in it as your second home!

If you’re truly interested, the pods are based in Côte de Granit Rose in Brittany, France.

Even though floating around the world in a luxury pod isn’t something everyone can do, it’s still fun to fantasize about it!

Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in one of these pods?

A Loan Sharks Stepped in When the Worst Roommate of All Time Stole From Everyone to Gamble

People have been dealing with bad roommates for as long as we’ve been living with others in our home.

Having a roommate can alleviate a lot of financial stress when it comes to paying rent and the bills on time, but if you have a roommate who steals, the opposite is true.

One guy recently shared the story of how his terrible roommate “Kevin” stole, gambled, and ended up dealing with loan sharks in the end.

It all started because Kevin needed somewhere to stay and the guy’s friend needed help with rent.

At first, Kevin seemed fine, right?

Alas… it was too good to be true. It turns out Kevin had a bit of an online gambling problem.

Unfortunately, it seems that Kevin wasn’t exactly good at gambling.

If only Kevin had actually been telling the truth! Instead, he decided to totally double-cross the friend who let him move in at the beginning.

That’s truly messed up! It’s one thing to wreck your own life, but to take innocent people down with you is cold.

The guy was able to get it sorted out, but then… some pretty intimidating people started showing up to collect on Kevin’s debits.

Luckily, the friend knew exactly what to do with that address.

I think it’s safe to say that Kevin got what was coming to him.

Here’s what Reddit had to say…

I mean, did people think Kevin had what was coming to him? Yeah they did.

And some surprising love for… loan sharks!

This Woman Set Tumblr Aflame After Claiming That Fish Aren’t Animals

Have you ever witnessed one of those conversations online that you just know is going to turn into a big mess?

That’s exactly what this conversation is like. One woman decided to let Tumblr know that vegans can eat fish because she doesn’t believe that fish are animals.

As you can imagine, this set off a veritable firestorm of debate.

It starts off with a bang: why are all these vegans eating salmon? Veganism is a lifestyle choice that requires adoptees to avoid animal products in every part of their life, whenever possible.

The first person correctly pointed out that vegans probably aren’t eating salmon… since fish are animals.

But the original commenter decides to double down.

It’s not really a question: fish are animals. I repeat: fish are animals.

It’s helpful that another person pointed out that also… eating salmon doesn’t inherently give you salmonella.

One person seems to believe that maybe the woman had her lifestyle choice words wrong. Perhaps she meant pescatarian?

The original poster is uninterested in debating the actual term, because she is way more focused on proving her erroneous beliefs about fish.

Unfortunately for her, the actual definition of fish literally includes the word animal.

When confronted with this information, the woman denies, denies, denies.

She doesn’t just deny it once, either: she keeps going as if everyone can’t scroll up and see exactly what she wrote.

Can you believe the audacity of this woman to deny her own blatant misinformation? It’s pretty galling.

12 Countries That Will Let Americans Buy Citizenship, Just in Case You Were Wondering…

If recent events have you a little anxious about living in America right now, you’re not alone. A new survey reports that 31% of Americans are thinking of leaving the country depending on how the 2020 election goes.

For some people, that’s really easy. Maybe they’re already dual citizens, or they have the ability to just pick up and go anywhere.

For others, it might be easy… but expensive.

Photo by Ross Parmly on Unsplash

It turns out quite a few countries will let Americans simply buy citizenship if they want to, and others have established programs for remote workers that are quite generous.

Of course, the process of gaining citizenship in another country is no easy feat, and often takes some time. However, some countries have citizen investment programs that streamline this process, step-by-step.

Dr. Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, helps people figure out how to get citizenship elsewhere. He notes:

Demand for these programs is accelerating, just as the supply has grown globally. Increasingly, nations and wealthy individuals see investment migration as more than a competitive advantage.

Today, it is viewed as an absolute requirement in a volatile world.

Here are the countries who will let you in… for a price:

St Kitts & Nevis

These Caribbean islands have a very generous passport program that allows citizens of over 100 countries to visit visa-free.

If you donate $150,000 to their “Sustainable Growth Fund” and invest $200,000 in real estate, you can also become a citizen.

St. Lucia

This island began offering residency in 2015, and through the end of 2020 will charge $250,000 for individuals and $300,000 for a family of four who are interested in becoming citizens.

Antigua and Barbuda

This twin-island Caribbean nation requests a $100,000 donation to its development fund along with a real estate investment from prospective citizens.

Dominica

Dominica is one of the best options for families. If one of you gets citizenship, it’s automatically extended to your spouse and children.

Grenada

This country offers two options: donate $150,000 to the nation’s National Transformation Fund or buy real estate with a minimum price of $350,000.

Portugal

Yeah, Portugal! Can you believe that?

You should! Because the European nation makes it pretty easy to become a citizen.

You’ll need to qualify for their Golden Visa Program first, but there are lots of ways to do that.

Malta

Maltese citizenship is heavily sought after, but it’s also pricey.

For $1.1 million in donations and real estate investments, you can live and work in Malta or anywhere else in the EU.

Cyprus

People who are interested in becoming citizens of Cyprus will need deep pockets.

The nation requires $2.5 million in donations and real estate developments.

Austria

For a minimum of $3.5 million, you can become an Austrian citizen and take advantage of the country’s robust visa program to boot.

New Zealand

Americans often talk about gaining citizenship in New Zealand, but you’ll need to invest $2 million over four years to do so.

Turkey

If you have $250,000 to invest in their Citizenship-by-Investment program, you can become a citizen of Turkey pretty easily.

Vanuatu

If the South Pacific sounds appealing (doesn’t it always?), a family of four can become citizens of this nation for $180,000.

Since we’ve all got hundreds of thousands of dollars just lying around, let’s play: where would you become a citizen if you could?

Tumblr Users Proves That Sometimes It’s Impossible to Really Break an Old Habit

Habits are formed after we perform an action often enough that it becomes ingrained in our brain.

Some habits are helpful, especially those that pertain to our work and to our goals.

Other habits are honestly a little annoying, especially if they’re something we do every day because we have to, not because we want to.

People on Tumblr shared the habit that they have yet to break, and the hilarious consequences that result, and the stories are pretty fantastic.

For starters: if you think having a toddler at home is tough, imagine being how being surrounded by them at work impacts your life.

To say nothing of what flight attendants go through!

And teachers, of course, definitely have a lot of repetition in their day.

But if anyone can really claim to be king or queen of repeating the same two or three phrases all day, it’s anyone who works in customer service.

…but at least this person managed to say something nice!

Those preschool teacher expressions really, really stick with you:

Sometimes, those odd work habits even end up being useful when one is out in the wild.

But then again… unfortunately, sometimes the opposite is true.

Luckily for our pets, sometimes they even end up benefiting from our weird work habits. Kind of.

And again, working in customer service for a longtime certainly comes with pretty unique pros and cons.

Do you have a work-related habit that is hard to break and a funny story to go with it?

Tell us all about it in the comments! After all, it can’t be any worse than some of these.
