Here’s How Zoos and Aquariums Prepare Themselves for Hurricanes

Hurricane Florence, as you have probably seen on the news, is landing on the southeastern coast of the United States. So, what does this mean for businesses like zoos and aquariums who must ensure that their animals are taken care of?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which encompasses over 230 animal care facilities in the US and abroad, requires all members to practice an annual disaster preparedness drill in order to ensure they are ready for any sort of natural disaster that might head their way. That said, the logistics of figuring out how to shelter animals in place – for practice or for real – can be daunting and fraught with potential roadblocks (if not outright disasters).

Plans begin with staff removing loose debris and signs that could blow around, checking generators and gas tanks, and prepping cleaning and feeding supplies that are able to be stockpiled in advance. They also choose members of the staff to be part of a “ride-out crew,” which are people who will stay with the animals through the disaster or storm.

For Hurricane Harvey, just 15 staff members remained at the Houston Zoo. CEO Lee Ehmke told NPR that they “were sleeping here at the zoo, on cots or on the floor. We prepared food so everyone was fed. There was a lot of radio and internet communication to make sure the right diets were given to the animals.”

While every zoo is different, one thing they have in common is that they have primary, secondary, and tertiary plans – backups for their backups. There are a lot of lives at stake and, human or not, they matter. When Hurricane Katrina knocked out even emergency generators, much of the aquatic population at New Orleans’ Audubon Aquarium perished.

When marine life is involved, staying put is almost always the best option, and ahead of Hurricane Irma, no one at Zoo Miami suggested trying to relocate the animals. In fact, communications director Ron Magill told NPR that the stress of evacuating alone can be enough to kill an animal, depending on their constitution.

Most of the night enclosures built for the big carnivores are strong enough to withstand anything a hurricane can toss their way, but birds and smaller mammals are relocated to kennels or indoors to weather the storm – a practice Zoo Miami instituted after losing nearly 100 birds during Hurricane Andrew.

The zoos who are a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums are a family and look out for each other, with several bringing supplies and aid to the Houston area after Hurricane Harvey. They also set up a relief fund to raise money for affected employees and their families.

So rest assured that the North and South Carolina zoos and aquariums likely to be affected by Hurricane Florence have been preparing for the coming storm and feel as if they’re ready to weather the storm – with their animal charges – as responsibly as possible.

Brave Man Documents His Epic, 4-Year Battle Against Birds

Some of the greatest stories of our time are not in movies or television shows. No, they’re in our own backyards.

atomicrabbit2 shared the story of his bird battle on Imgur, (since picked up by Bored Panda). It all began four years ago, when he moved into a new house. One of the features that attracted him to this house was a gas heater, which has an exhaust vent near the back door. The vent is tucked beneath the eaves, creating a snug, dry space that’s perfect for a small bird.

atomicrabbit2 moved into his home in August of 2014, and upon discovering the birds, he was initially willing to let them be. But the situation quickly became untenable. “At first I ignored it, he wrote, “but they started shitting and building a nest INSIDE the exhaust.”

The following spring, (March 2015), atomicrabbit2’s decided to cover the entire vent in chicken wire, blocking the birds’ entrance. “I was proud of the tidy, little wrap I did, patted myself on the back and figured that was it.”

But the battle was just beginning.

A couple months later, when atomicrabbit2 went to check the vent, he found that the birds had simply relocated their nest to the top of the vent.

After checking the nest for eggs and not finding any, atomicrabbit2 cleared it away. But the very next day, a bird returned to rebuild.

atomicrabbit2 chased that bird away, cleared out the second nest, and that seemed to be it. The birds never returned for the rest of 2015.

But the armistice was temporary. In May of 2016, the bird were back. After all, a warm vent is prime bird real-estate.

“Ok this is getting annoying,” he wrote.  “So I added bird spikes on top which I figured would keep them out for good.”

By June of 2016, atomicrabbit2 had constructed an impenetrable gauntlet of bird spikes. Surely no bird could even fit through them, much less build a nest among them. Right?

WRONG!

Every time atomicrabbit2 cleared away the nest, the birds would rebuild–which surely was even more infuriating, because the chicken wire and spikes made removing the nest about 10,00 times more difficult.

The struggle continued throughout 2016 and into 2017. atomicrabbit2 eventually covered the entire space in chicken wire.

But the birds, which are more badass than the members of Black Sabbath and Mötley Crüe combined, just found a way around that, too.

“How???” atomicrabbit2 wrote. How, indeed. Are these birds secret ninjas? Can they some how pass through physical objects unimpeded? No, and no. The answer, it turned out, was that the birds squeezed through a small gap in the wire.

Or as atomicrabbit2 put it, “Those birds were flying up into their now high-end GATED F*CKING COMMUNITY!”

It was now May of 2018. At this point, a normal person might have given up and relinquished the vent to the birds. Or maybe they would have moved, to a country that has no birds.

But atomicrabbit2 is far from normal. He had one last idea.

Meet Dr. Who.

TRIUMPH!

The owl decoy did its job and scared away the birds. For good measure, atomicrabbit2 closed the gap in the chicken wire. He hasn’t seen them since.

But as we’ve seen before, peace can be temporary. atomicrabbit2 has had many temporary victories in the past, only to watch the birds return in full force. If they return next year, he says, he might start charging them rent.

Something tells us this isn’t over.

We reached out to several prominent ornithologists to comment on this story. And while none of them responded, we’re sure they all would agree: birds are dicks.

15 People Reveal the One Personal Rule They Will Never Break

Whether you think of them regularly or not, we all have our own personal rules that we live by. We don’t break them ourselves, and we don’t like it when other people do, either. These things tend to be pretty personal though, so you may be surprised to learn what these 15 people would never consider throwing out the window!

#15. Feeling included.

“If im in a group of 3+ people, i will always talk to everyone. There’s usually always 1 person who is quiet because of some reason…maybe wasnt there for something we talked about or just cant find a way to contribute. I know that feeling all too well, just standing there with nothing to say feels awkward and uncomfortable. I dont want anyone to feel like how I used to. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but to that one person, it might’ve made their day feeling included.”

#14. It grosses me out.

“I can let my room get messy at times, but I always make sure that unfinished food and plates that had food on them are taken care of right away. It just grosses me out to leave that stuff around my room.

I also make sure to drink water after every meal and really, every drink I have that isn’t water.”

#13. Littering.

“I don’t litter.”

#12. Where I came from.

“Remember where I came from. 33 years ago I was a college failure with no job, no food, no money and no future. People helped me who didnt have to. I owe them to help others to pay back what they did for me. If I can help, I have to help.”

#11. Never make fun.

“Never make fun of somebodies weird laugh, as it could be the only time somebody is truly happy, and to take that away from somebody else is just unnecessary.”

#10. Kindness.

“Same rules I raise my sons by: 1. Kindness matters even if no one else will see it 2. Kindness will not always mean niceness. 3. Kindness starts with yourself, you cannot give what you do not have.”

#9. Neat and tidy.

“Keep a neat and tidy work space. I build cabinets and furniture for a living. Having your work space and tools in disarray can lead to mistakes easier than one might think.”

#8. Intentions.

“I never get angry at accidents or punish people for something they didn’t intend to happen.

Along the same lines, I don’t care who’s fault it is, I just want to know what happened and how it’s being fixed.”

#7. The toilet paper.

“always replace the toilet paper if you used the last of it

if you pee on the seat, clean it up

do your own dish

don’t litter”

#6. My good word.

“If you make a promise to someone make sure its one you can keep. If its something that might not happen I’ll say “I will do my best on this but I can’t promise anything.” I try very hard to keep my word good.”

#5. Say thank you.

“If someone does something well – I tell them / thank them. People are genuinely surprised when others take the time to give positive feedback.

Edit: Hey thanks everyone, glad you all liked my ‘rule.’ :)”

#4. The keys.

“Never lock the car door without my keys in my hand.”

#3. Even if I don’t feel like I need to.

“Always pee before going to bed. Even if I don’t feel like I need to.”

#2. Work at work.

“I walk into work leaving emotion at the door and walk out of work, leaving work at work.

Its easier said then done, but it allows for a great work life balance.

Edit: can’t believe how high this is! Going to try and answer some of the questions!”

#1. Don’t wear out your welcome.

“Never over stay your welcome. Always leave way before your welcome has expired.”
